To everyone who RECENTLY RECEIVED PRIOR YEAR REFUNDS...how long did you wait and what was your process?

Looking for data points. Filed for 2021 refund recently. Got accepted. Wondering about timeline. Anyone get prior year refunds lately? How long was your wait? What steps did you take? Any tricks to speed it up? Thanks in advance.

Caleb Stark

In my experience, prior year refunds generally take about 6-8 weeks to process, though it can sometimes take longer depending on various factors like staffing levels and complexity of your return. The IRS seems to be processing these somewhat faster now than they were a year or two ago, but it's still not exactly quick. You might want to check your account transcript periodically, as that will likely update before you receive any official notice.

My situation was similar to yours but for 2020 taxes. I waited about 7 weeks compared to the usual 3 weeks for current year returns. The process was identical to filing current year taxes, but the verification seemed more thorough than when I file on time. Unlike regular returns where I could see updates on WMR, my prior year refund just showed up in my account with minimal updates beforehand.

I'm curious - did you file electronically or by paper? My experience suggests that paper filing for prior years might add several months to the process, whereas electronic filing seems to be processed somewhat more efficiently, though still slower than current year returns.

Why does the IRS treat prior year returns so differently? I filed my 2021 return electronically in January this year and got my refund exactly 52 days later. The interesting thing was that my transcript didn't update until about day 45, then everything happened at once. Is this because they're verifying against older data systems?

The Refund Statute Expiration Date (RSED) is also important to consider. For 2021 returns, you generally have until April 15, 2025 to claim your refund. After that date, the IRS is not legally required to issue your refund, even if you were entitled to one.

I've noticed prior year processing is like watching paint dry...but with less excitement! šŸ˜‚ Seriously though, electronic filing cuts processing time roughly in half compared to paper. My 2021 return took 9 weeks when I e-filed in January, while my buddy who paper-filed is still waiting after 4 months.

Have you checked your transcripts? I was confused by all the codes. Used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript for my 2021 return. Showed me exactly what was happening. Explained all the cryptic codes. Gave me an estimated refund date. Was spot on. Really helped with the anxiety of waiting.

I filed my 2021 taxes in February this year. Got my refund last week. Total wait was 6 weeks. Make sure you have all your documents in order. Double-check everything before submitting. Prior year returns get extra scrutiny. They verify everything carefully. Be patient.

According to IRS Publication 17, prior year returns should be processed within 16 weeks. However, I waited 14 weeks for my 2021 refund with zero updates. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to reach an actual IRS agent. Got through in 25 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. Agent confirmed my return was approved but stuck in final review. Refund arrived one week later.

The IRS processing pipeline for prior year returns is significantly different from current year returns. They go through the Submission Processing Center first, then to the Accounts Management department for verification against previously filed information returns (W-2s, 1099s, etc.). This dual-verification process inherently creates a longer timeline than current-year processing, which often benefits from real-time data matching capabilities.

Is there a specific resource where I can track these different processing stages? The IRS website is so confusing to navigate.

This process is like trying to get a mortgage refinanced - everything needs double verification! I'm in week 5 of waiting for my 2021 refund and wondering if I should budget for receiving it this month or next.

I think I might have made a mistake on my 2021 return... if they're doing all this verification, will they just reject it or will they contact me first? I'm a bit worried now.

I filed my 2021 return exactly 47 days ago. My transcript updated 3 days ago with code 846 showing a direct deposit date of 05/17/2024. The verification process took 44 days from submission to approval. My refund amount is $2,743.82 which matches my calculation precisely.

Filed my 2021 return on January 23, 2024. Received acceptance confirmation on January 24, 2024. Transcript updated on March 12, 2024. Refund deposited on March 19, 2024. Total wait: 56 days. Called IRS on February 28 (at the 5-week mark). They confirmed it was in processing with no issues. Just required patience.

For anyone waiting on prior year refunds, here's what to do: 1. File electronically if possible - paper returns take 2-3x longer 2. Check your transcript weekly (not daily) for code changes 3. Look specifically for codes 570/571 (adjustments) and 846 (refund issued) 4. If you reach 8 weeks with no updates, THEN consider calling 5. Have all your documentation ready if you need to call 6. Be prepared for possible identity verification Time is critical! Prior year returns have refund expiration dates!

This is excellent advice. I'd also add that if you're owed interest on your refund (which is likely for a prior year return), you'll see code 776 on your transcript. The interest is taxable in the year you receive it, so keep that in mind for next year's taxes.

I had success with my 2021 refund after waiting patiently. Filed in February 2024, received in April 2024. The key was having meticulous documentation. I created a folder with copies of all supporting documents. Included a cover letter explaining my late filing. Made sure every form was properly signed. Verified my direct deposit information three times. The effort paid off with a smooth process and no unexpected delays.

Different approach that worked for me: ā€¢ Filed through a tax professional instead of DIY ā€¢ Used Certified Mail with Return Receipt ā€¢ Included Form 8822 to update address ā€¢ Called the dedicated Prior Year Return hotline (not the main IRS line) ā€¢ Requested Tax Advocate assistance after 60 days Result: 2021 refund processed in 7 weeks instead of the quoted 16 weeks. Anyone tried this combination?

Thank you for sharing these specific steps! The Tax Advocate Service can definitely help in these situations, though they generally require some kind of hardship qualification. Did you have to demonstrate financial hardship to get their assistance?

I actually found that using a tax professional made my process slower, oddly enough. They made an error on my return that I wouldn't have made myself, and that triggered a manual review. But I do think the Certified Mail approach is smart - I'll definitely use that next time.

Did the Prior Year Return hotline actually help? I've been trying different IRS numbers with no luck. What's the best time to call them?
