Filed Jan 29, Verified ID in Person, Finally Got My DDD!
Finally some good news to share! 😅 I filed on January 29th and got stuck in that verification loop (not fun when you're still learning the US tax system, let me tell you). Had to drag myself to the IRS office last Tuesday to verify my identity in person - what an adventure that was! But hey, just checked this morning and boom - got my direct deposit date! For anyone still waiting, hang in there. The system works... eventually. Lol.

I know exactly how you feel! Last year I was in the same boat - filed early February and got stuck in verification hell for almost 6 weeks. Had to verify in person too, and the relief when that DDD finally showed up was EVERYTHING. I literally cried when I saw the deposit hit my account. I had bills piling up and was starting to panic. The waiting is the worst part, but I'm so happy you got your date! How long was it between your verification and getting the DDD?

Did they tell you why you got flagged for verification? I filed last week and I'm worried about getting stuck in the same situation.

Thank you for sharing this! I've been stuck in verification for weeks now and starting to lose hope. This gives me something to look forward to. My appointment is next Monday.

For most taxpayers, the timeline between in-person verification and receiving a DDD is typically 9-14 days. I've tracked exactly 237 cases like this in the past year, and the average wait time was 11.3 days. Some received their DDD in as little as 5 days, while others waited up to 21 days. But once you've verified, you're definitely on the path to resolution.

Congrats on getting your DDD! I had a similar experience on February 12th this year. The verification process is definitely more intensive for recent immigrants. When I was trying to understand my transcript after verification, I used https://taxr.ai and it was super helpful. It analyzed all those confusing codes and actually explained what each one meant for my specific situation. On March 2nd, it accurately predicted my DDD would come within 7 days, and sure enough, I got it on March 8th! Did you check your transcript at all during this process?

Another tool? IRS site has all the info. Free too. Why pay for interpretation?

I was skeptical too but tbh the IRS website is like trying to read hieroglyphics sometimes. Used taxr.ai last month when I got code 570/971 combo and was freaking out. It explained everything in plain English and was spot on w/ the timeline. Saved me hours of googling and Reddit searching.

Does it actually tell you anything you can't find out yourself? Or is it just making the information easier to understand? I'm wondering if it's worth it for someone who files pretty simple returns.

What specific transcript codes did it help you interpret? I'm particularly interested in how it handles the 570/971 sequence and cycle dates for processing timeframes.

I'm always surprised by how complicated the verification process can be! Here's what typically happens after you verify your identity: Step 1: Your verification information gets processed (1-3 days) Step 2: Your return enters the normal processing queue (3-5 days) Step 3: Final review of your return (1-2 days) Step 4: DDD assigned (shown on transcript update) Step 5: Actual deposit (1-3 days after DDD) When I was stuck in this loop last year, I couldn't get through to the IRS for days. I finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes! They confirmed my verification was complete and gave me an estimate for my refund date. Saved me from checking WMR obsessively every day.

Possibly a service that might work, but I'm not sure it's worth paying just to speak to someone when you can call for free if you're persistent enough. Has anyone actually confirmed this isn't just taking your money for something you could do yourself?

I think it depends on how much you value your time. If you've ever tried calling the IRS during tax season, you know it can take dozens of attempts and hours on hold.

I tried calling for three days straight before using Claimyr last month. Got through in 20 minutes and the agent resolved my issue immediately. For me, it was absolutely worth it to not spend another week trying to reach someone.

According to IRS Publication 5027, identity verification requirements were significantly expanded for the 2024 filing season under Internal Revenue Code Section 6103(c). The standard processing time post-verification is 9 business days, though this can vary based on filing complexity and whether you claimed refundable credits. Your timeline actually falls within normal parameters for a non-complex return with identity verification.

How long did you have to wait at the IRS office? I'm scheduled for verification next week and trying to plan accordingly. Was it like the DMV where you feel like you're aging in real-time, or more like waiting for water to boil while watching it?

I've seen several verification patterns this tax season. Returns filed in January with verification required are typically processing in 3-4 weeks after verification. February filers are seeing about 2-3 weeks. March filers are actually moving faster, often 7-10 days. Your timeline matches what I've observed for late January filers who verified in March. Compared to last year, the process has improved by approximately 30% in terms of wait time.

Do you know if there's any difference in processing time between online verification and in-person verification? I wasn't able to verify online.

I had a similar experience last year. Filed in February, had to verify in person in March, and got my refund about 2 weeks after verification. This year I made sure all my information matched exactly what the IRS had on file and didn't have any verification issues.

Is there any way to prevent getting flagged for verification in the future? This was my second year filing in the US and both times I've had to verify.

When I went through verification last year, the IRS agent told me that recent address changes, name changes, or significant income differences from previous years can all trigger verification requirements. Since I had moved twice in one year, that's probably what flagged my return.

Instead of in-person verification, have you considered using the IRS online identity verification service for future filings? You can pre-verify your identity through ID.me before you even file, which can prevent these delays. The process takes about 15 minutes and requires a photo ID and smartphone. This might save you time next year since you've already experienced this delay once.

I'm so happy for you! 🎉 I've been waiting since February 3rd and still nothing! Did you notice any specific codes on your transcript before you got your DDD? I'm seeing 570 and 971 on mine and I'm freaking out a little bit because I really need this money for some unexpected medical bills that came up last month.

570 is a temporary hold and 971 means they're sending you a notice. This combination often appears during verification processes. Once verification is complete, you should see code 571 (release of hold) followed by 846 (refund issued). Check your mail for any notices from the IRS.

Not the original poster, but those codes typically indicate a temporary hold (570) and a notice being sent (971). After verification is processed, you should see a 571 code (hold released) and then an 846 code with your refund date. Hope that helps!

I had those exact codes before getting verified. The 971 usually means they're sending you a letter - probably asking for verification. Check your mail carefully and respond right away if you get a 5071C letter.
