FINALLY Got My Refund Date After Identity Verification!
I FINALLY got a date! Filed 2/6, nothing for weeks... In my country, tax process was much simpler, but here I had to learn the hard way. After seeing previous posts about verification, went online and requested the letter... nothing happened. Called IRS on 3/15 and they confirmed a letter was already on the way. Received it on 3/17. Completed online verification immediately. Just checked this morning and got a direct deposit date of 3/29. Phew. The waiting time was exactly 51 days from filing to getting a date. For anyone still waiting, verification might be your issue too.

Oh my goodness, I'm so happy for you!!! š The verification process is such a pain sometimes! Did they tell you why they needed to verify your identity? I'm always curious about what triggers those verification letters because it seems so random!

I'm in a similar boat right now. Filed on 1/29/2024, got the verification letter on 3/12/2024, verified on 3/13/2024, and still waiting for a date. Did your WMR status change before you got the date or did it just suddenly update with the deposit date?

This identity verification thing is getting more common every year. Last year my sister had to verify but I didn't, even though our situations were nearly identical. My parents never had to verify in 30+ years of filing, but now it seems like 1 in 4 people get flagged for it. The system is definitely more cautious than it used to be.

I just checked the IRS website about this. They say the verification process is to protect against identity theft. According to their FAQ page, they select returns based on certain risk factors that they don't fully disclose. After verification, they say processing typically takes 9 weeks, but clearly yours was faster! That's such a relief.

Congrats on finally getting through the verification maze! š I went through this last year and nearly lost my mind checking WMR every 4 hours like a crazy person. Have you checked your transcript yet? I found that using https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript was actually super helpful - it explained all those weird codes and gave me a much clearer picture of what was happening behind the scenes. Might save you some sanity if you have to go through this again next year... which I hope you don't!

Idk about these third-party sites tbh... can't the IRS website tell you the same info? Why would I need another site to explain what's already there? Just seems like an extra step.

What specific information does taxr.ai provide that the IRS doesn't? Does it actually predict refund dates accurately? I've been trying to understand my transcript for weeks and the IRS explanations are frustratingly vague.

Is this service actually interpreting the codes correctly, though? I mean, the IRS system is notoriously complex, so how can a third-party tool claim to understand what those codes mean in your specific situation?

I believe there might be some misunderstanding about the verification process. From what I understand, the IRS typically sends these letters when they detect potential identity concerns or when certain elements of your return trigger their verification protocols. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but rather a security measure that, while inconvenient, helps protect taxpayers. In your case, it seems the process worked as designed, though perhaps not as quickly as would be ideal.

Have you tried calling the IRS directly about why you needed verification in the first place? I had a similar situation and couldn't get through on their regular line for days. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to connect with an agent who explained that my address change triggered the verification. Saved me hours of redial attempts. Sometimes getting an actual person on the phone makes all the difference in understanding what's happening with your return.

I'm not convinced this verification process is even legitimate sometimes. Consider these points: ā¢ The IRS never clearly explains WHY you were selected ā¢ The timing is suspiciously inconsistent ā¢ Some people get letters, others get prompted online ā¢ There's no transparency about what triggers the verification ā¢ The technical documentation about their selection algorithm is nonexistent It feels like they're just randomly delaying refunds to manage cash flow.

While I understand the frustration, the verification process is actually quite important in the broader context. It's possible, though not certain, that your status as a recent immigrant might have triggered additional verification steps. The IRS systems are generally designed to flag returns that deviate from established patterns, which may include first-time filers in the US system. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it helps protect both taxpayers and the treasury from potential fraud.
