Everyone Getting Identity Verification Letters - Per IRS Notice CP01H Procedure

According to Internal Revenue Code ยง 6103(h)(4), the IRS has implemented enhanced verification procedures this filing season. I am seeing many posts about verification letters being sent out. As per Publication 1345, identity verification is a standard procedure when the IRS detects potential identity theft indicators. As someone who recently became a citizen, this is my second tax filing in the US, and I am trying to understand if this is normal or if there is an unusual increase in verification requests. Will this delay our refunds according to IRM 21.5.6.4.7? I am eager to learn the proper procedures if I receive such a letter.

I'm in the same boat and stressing about money. Here's what I've learned about these verification letters: 1. First, don't panic - this is happening to LOTS of people 2. Check if it's a CP01H or Letter 4883C - they require different responses 3. For CP01H: just wait, no action needed 4. For 4883C: you'll need to verify your identity 5. Response time affects your refund timeline I'm actually impressed by how much you know about the tax code! Wish I understood all these regulations when I first started filing.

Have you checked the IRS Identity Verification Service page at irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-verification? It explains that verification letters are part of their enhanced security protocols for 2024. The IRS has increased verification efforts by approximately 32% this year according to their March press release. Are you certain it's a verification letter and not an audit notice?

I got one of these letters last week and was totally confused! Mine specifically asked me to verify my identity through ID.me or by calling them. Has anyone actually gone through the ID.me process? Is it complicated? I'm worried because I don't have a state-issued ID yet, just my passport.

I had the same issue last tax season! The verification letter sat in my mailbox for 2 weeks while I was traveling, and by the time I responded, my refund was delayed by over a month. If you need to speak with an actual IRS agent about your verification letter (which I highly recommend), try using Claimyr.com. Regular IRS phone lines had me on hold for hours with no luck, but Claimyr got me connected to an agent in about 15 minutes who confirmed exactly what I needed to do. Saved me from making mistakes on my verification response!

Wait, you have to pay money to talk to the IRS? That doesn't seem right... shouldn't this be a free government service? I'm filing for the first time and everything seems so much more complicated than in my home country.

I've called the IRS probably 20+ times over the years. Claimyr isn't the IRS charging you - it's a service that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold FOR you, then calls you when an agent is actually on the line. After spending 3 days trying to get through myself last year, paying a small fee to not waste hours of my life was totally worth it.

Omg I just went thru this whole verification thing last month! Got the letter, freaked out, but it was actually super easy to fix. Called the # on the letter, verified some basic info, and my refund hit my acct exactly 9 days later. Don't stress too much abt it - just follow the instructions carefully and ur good ๐Ÿ‘

Thank you for sharing this! It's like when you go to the doctor worried about something serious and it turns out to be nothing. These letters look so official and scary, but hearing real experiences like yours makes it less intimidating.

Did they ask for any documents or just verbal verification? I'm wondering if I need to dig up all my paperwork before calling.

I had almost the exact same experience on April 2nd. Called at 8:32am (right when they opened), verified my info, and my refund was deposited on April 11th. Timing seems consistent with what you experienced!

I'm not convinced this is just normal procedure. The IRS has been dealing with budget cuts and staffing issues for years (haha, maybe they should file for unemployment themselves). There's a significant statistical anomaly in verification letter distribution this year - my analysis of posts across tax forums shows approximately 3.2x more reports than the same period last year. This could indicate either increased fraud attempts OR system glitches flagging legitimate returns. Either way, I'd recommend everyone check their tax transcripts for TC 570 codes which typically accompany these verification holds.

While there is an increase in verification letters, this is actually part of the IRS's Strategic Operating Plan implemented after receiving additional funding through the Inflation Reduction Act. They're utilizing enhanced fraud detection algorithms that employ machine learning to identify potential identity theft indicators. The TC 570 code is indeed associated with these verification holds, but it's typically followed by TC 571 once verification is complete. Most legitimate filers will see resolution within 21 days of responding to verification requests.

The Identity Theft Victim Assistance (ITVA) program has been significantly expanded for TY 2023/2024. These verification notices are part of the IRS's Taxpayer Protection Program (TPP) and are actually a good sign that security measures are working. I was relieved to learn that most verification cases are resolved within 21 days after response, according to the Taxpayer Advocate Service quarterly report.

I received exactly 3 verification letters over the past 5 years. In 2020, it delayed my refund by 42 days. In 2022, only 16 days. This year, I verified my identity online and received my refund in exactly 9 days. The IRS has definitely improved their verification processing times by approximately 78.6% since 2020. If you receive a letter, I suggest responding within 24 hours for fastest processing. Just be cautious about verifying through unofficial websites - always go directly through IRS.gov links.

Good advice. Check letter carefully. Use official IRS channels only. Have your documents ready. Previous year's AGI helps. Verification can be quick if prepared.

If you're concerned about receiving a verification letter, you might consider filing a Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) which allows a tax professional to speak to the IRS on your behalf should issues arise. This can sometimes help resolve verification issues more quickly, especially if you're not familiar with the US tax system. I've seen this approach work well for several clients who were new to filing in the US.
