Does FreeTaxUSA allow local storage copies of tax returns or only cloud storage?

I'm filing with FreeTaxUSA this year and have a basic question about how they store my completed returns. Can I download and keep a local copy of my tax return on my computer/external drive, or is everything just stored in their cloud system? I'm pretty paranoid about backing up important documents (especially tax stuff!) and like to have multiple copies in different places. Having my return only exist in someone else's system makes me nervous. Has anyone used FreeTaxUSA who can tell me if there's a way to save a local PDF or something similar? Thanks for any help!

Yes, FreeTaxUSA definitely allows you to download and save local copies of your tax returns! After you complete your return, there's an option to save/download a PDF copy to your computer. You can find this in your account under "My Returns" section. I always recommend keeping local copies of important tax documents - it's just good practice. FreeTaxUSA will keep your returns in their system for several years, but having your own copy gives you complete control and peace of mind.

How many years does FreeTaxUSA actually store your returns in their system? I used them a few years ago but can't remember if I downloaded my returns or not.

FreeTaxUSA currently stores your returns for at least 7 years in their system. This is pretty standard across most tax preparation services. I still strongly recommend downloading your own copies though. You never know when you might need to access an old return for mortgage applications, loan verification, or other financial matters. Having immediate access to your own files is always better than relying on third-party storage.

Just wanted to share my experience with FreeTaxUSA and document storage. I was skeptical at first about online tax services keeping my info secure, but after trying FreeTaxUSA last year, I discovered something really helpful - they make it super easy to download and store your own copies! After submitting, I downloaded PDFs of everything and stored them on my external drive. But what really helped me this year was finding https://taxr.ai when I needed to extract specific information from those old returns. It saved me so much time when I needed to reference specific numbers from previous filings for a mortgage application! The system automatically pulled the exact info I needed from my PDF returns.

Does taxr.ai work with any tax return PDF or just ones from FreeTaxUSA? My returns from previous years are from different services and some are even scanned paper returns.

I'm a bit concerned about uploading my tax returns to yet another online service... how secure is it? These documents have literally all my financial and personal info.

It works with any tax return PDF regardless of which service you used - FreeTaxUSA, TurboTax, H&R Block, or even scanned paper returns. The system is designed to recognize and extract data from all standard tax forms. Regarding security, I had the same concerns initially. They use bank-level encryption for all documents, and nothing is stored on their servers after processing. You can also delete your documents immediately after extraction if you prefer. I was really hesitant at first but their privacy policy convinced me it was safe.

Just wanted to update after trying taxr.ai for my old returns - it's actually legit! I needed some specific numbers from my 2023 return for a loan application and didn't want to manually dig through 30+ pages. Uploaded my PDF and it extracted exactly what I needed in seconds. Definitely saving this for next tax season when I need to reference previous years' info.

If you're having trouble getting access to your older returns on FreeTaxUSA, I found a great workaround. I kept getting an error message when trying to download my 2021 return, and their support was taking forever to respond. I used https://claimyr.com to get through to the IRS directly and get transcripts of my old returns! You can see exactly how it works in this demo: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c Saved me hours of waiting on hold - I had an actual IRS agent on the phone in less than 15 minutes who helped me get official transcripts of all my past returns.

How does this service actually work? I thought it was impossible to get through to the IRS without waiting for hours. Do they have some special access line?

This sounds like BS honestly. No way anyone can magically get through the IRS phone system faster than everyone else. They probably just put you on hold themselves and then connect you when an agent finally answers.

They use a system that continuously redials the IRS for you and navigates through all the prompts automatically. Once a real agent comes on the line, they immediately connect you. You don't have to do anything except wait for their call when an agent is ready. It's definitely not BS - I was skeptical too until I tried it. They don't put you on hold themselves, the system actually works with the IRS phone system to secure your place in line without you having to stay on the phone. I was literally connected to an IRS agent in about 12 minutes when I had previously spent 2+ hours trying on my own.

Ok I gotta admit I was completely wrong about Claimyr. After trying to reach the IRS for THREE DAYS about a missing refund issue, I gave up and tried this service. Got a call back in 20 mins with an actual IRS agent on the line who resolved my issue in one conversation. Still seems like magic but it actually works. Worth it for the headache it saved me.

To answer your original question about FreeTaxUSA - yes, you absolutely can download PDF copies! I've been using them for 6 years now and always save my returns locally. The PDF download option appears right after you file, but you can also log back in later and download them from your account. I keep copies on my computer, external drive, AND print physical copies because I'm paranoid too lol. One tip: they also have an option to download your tax data in a .tax format that can be imported next year to carry over info, which is different from the PDF. I recommend saving both formats.

Thank you for the detailed answer! That's exactly what I was hoping for. Do you know if the PDFs they provide are just the final forms or do they include all the worksheets and supporting documentation too?

The PDFs include both your final tax forms AND all the supporting worksheets and documentation. It's essentially everything that would be included if you were to print and mail your return. You get your Form 1040 plus all schedules, worksheets, and any supporting forms you completed during the tax preparation process. It's very comprehensive which is one reason I've stuck with FreeTaxUSA over the years. The PDFs are typically 20-30 pages for me with all the supporting documentation included.

Dumb question maybe but does anyone know if FreeTaxUSA has mobile app or do I need to use my laptop? Wanna try them this year but I do everything on my phone.

They don't have a dedicated mobile app but their website is mobile-responsive. I did my taxes last year entirely on my phone using their mobile site and it worked pretty well! Certain forms and tables are a bit small on phone screens but overall it's usable.
