Do tax clients actually want appointment reminder calls from their tax preparer?

I'm a CPA working part-time during tax season at one of those tax prep chains. Management is pushing us to call all clients from the past three years who haven't scheduled yet to "remind them we're open" and try to get them on the calendar. They're also sending out these automated reminder texts/emails that look like they're coming directly from me as the tax professional. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Do people actually appreciate these kinds of reminders? Is a phone call too intrusive compared to an email or text? Does it make the appointment scheduling process easier for clients, or are most people just annoyed by it? Maybe there's some middle ground that's actually helpful without being pushy? Would love to hear thoughts from both tax pros and clients!

For most clients, a single email reminder in January that tax season is starting is appreciated - it puts it on their radar without feeling invasive. A follow-up email in early March for those who haven't scheduled yet is also reasonable. I'd avoid calls unless the client has specifically indicated they prefer phone communication. The automated messages in your name are actually quite common practice now, but they should be professionally written and not overly sales-focused. Think of them as a service rather than a marketing tactic.

From a client perspective, I HATE phone calls, but I do appreciate a text or email reminder. Phone calls feel pushy and sales-y to me, especially from a business relationship that only happens once a year. Age might be a factor for some, but I think it's more about personality and individual preferences than a strict generational divide. I'm in my 50s and strongly prefer text/email, while my 28-year-old daughter likes talking on the phone for business matters. I think you hit the nail on the head with your second point - tax preparers should definitely ask clients about their preferred contact method and make a note in their system.
