DDD was Monday with offset - IRS says wait 5 days before they'll investigate missing refund

I had a direct deposit date scheduled for Monday with an offset that was supposed to be deducted automatically. Since I didnt receive anything yesterday, I called up the IRS and actually managed to speak with an agent. He told me that for anyone who has an offset on their refund and hasnt received the money by their DDD needs to allow up to 5 DAYS before they can even investigate whats happening with it. So basically if your situation is like mine and you had a DDD for Monday with some kind of offset, we might have to wait almost a week before we see that refund! Thought everyone should know this so you don't waste time calling too early.

This is correct. When you have an offset involved, the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) needs to process everything before funds are released to your bank account. The 5-day window is standard procedure because your refund has to go through both the IRS systems and then the TOP systems before it reaches your bank. Here's what typically happens: - Day 1-2: IRS processes the offset calculation - Day 2-3: TOP receives and confirms the offset amount - Day 3-5: Remaining refund gets routed to your bank One thing to check - make sure your bank hasn't placed a hold on the deposit (some banks do this with government deposits). But honestly, I'd just wait the full 5 days before getting too concerned.

thanks for the detailed explanation! my bank usually posts government deposits same day so I dont think thats the issue. guess ill just have to be patient 😩

One time my refund showed up exactly 4 days after my DDD when I had an offset for student loans. The system is so slow.

0 coins

Does this apply to all types of offsets or just certain ones? Mine is for state taxes.

0 coins

It applies to all offsets handled through TOP - which includes federal student loans, state taxes, child support, etc. They all go through the same system.

Honestly all of this IRS stuff is so confusing. I was in a similar situation last year and couldn't figure out why my refund was delayed. I wasted hours trying to understand all the codes and notices. Eventually I tried this tool called taxr.ai and it was insanely helpful - it actually explained my transcript in normal english and told me exactly what was happening with my offset and when to expect the refund. It was right on the money too! I use it every time I need to check my tax stuff now. You can find it at https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It does WAY more than just read your transcript! It analyzes everything and explains what each code means specifically for YOUR situation. It also gives you a timeline of when to expect your refund based on your specific circumstances (like having an offset). Seriously saved me so much stress and guesswork. Everyone dealing with tax stuff should use it.

another tax service? ugh there's so many scams out there...

0 coins

I totally get the skepticism - I was hesitant too. But this isn't like those other services at all. It actually delivers what it promises. I've used it multiple times now and it's helped me navigate some complicated tax situations without having to spend hours on hold with the IRS or trying to interpret their cryptic codes. Definitely not a scam!

I was in your EXACT situation last month. Had a DDD for a Tuesday with an offset for past medical debt. After not seeing my refund for 3 days, I was going insane trying to reach someone at the IRS but kept getting the runaround. Finally used Claimyr.com to get through to a real person - they called me back with an actual IRS agent on the line! The agent confirmed what yours told you about the 5-day window, but actually helped speed things up on their end. Got my refund the next day. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my questions answered instead of stressing for days.

wait does that actually work? ive tried calling the IRS like 20 times and always get disconnected

0 coins

Yeah it seriously works. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after being hung up on repeatedly. You put in your number and they call you back when they've got an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

do they give you a timeframe for when theyll call? i cant be waiting by my phone all day

0 coins

They actually tell you approximately how long it'll take based on current call volumes. For me it was about 35 minutes. Way better than the 3+ hours I wasted trying to call myself.

0 coins

I've been looking for something like this! The IRS phone system is the worst thing I've ever dealt with. Definitely checking this out.

0 coins

how did you find out about this? i've never heard of it before

0 coins

Someone recommended it in another tax group I'm in. Trust me, if you need to talk to the IRS, it's a game changer.

0 coins

I had a DDD of Feb 25 with offset for student loans. My refund hit my account Feb 28, so yep about 3 days later. The waiting is annoying but atleast they're consistent with the timing. 🤷‍♀️

The IRS is such a joke sometimes. Their "direct deposit date" isn't even direct or on that date if you have an offset! What exactly am I paying these people for with my taxes lol. Thanks for the heads up tho.

0 coins

fr this is why I always file as early as possible. The longer you wait the more messed up things get with them

0 coins

To be fair, it's not really the IRS employees fault. They're critically underfunded and using computer systems from the 1960s. They're doing what they can.

0 coins

Underfunded or not, they shouldn't give us specific dates if they can't deliver. Just say 'within 7-10 days' instead of making us check our accounts every hour on the DDD 🙄

0 coins

Thanks for sharing this info! Was your offset for student loans? Mine is and I'm on day 2 after my DDD. Getting antsy but this helps me be a little more patient.

0 coins

Mine was for some old state taxes I owed. But from what the agent said this applies to all types of offsets going through their system

0 coins

I went through this EXACT thing last year. It took exactly 4 days after my DDD to get my refund with an offset. Its maddening how they give you a "direct deposit date" that isn't actually accurate. They should just call it an "offset processing date" or something more realistic.

0 coins

Has anyone tried checking your transcript again after the DDD passes? Sometimes there are updates there before the money actually hits your account.

0 coins

I checked mine this morning and nothing changed since last week

0 coins

I struggled so much trying to understand my transcript until I used taxr.ai - it's the only way I could make sense of all those codes. It actually showed me that my refund was reduced because of an offset I didn't even know about! Saved me from going crazy trying to figure out why my amount changed. https://taxr.ai

The worst part is you cant even get someone on the phone to confirm if its being processed correctly. Spent 3 hours on hold yesterday just to be disconnected. This system is broken beyond belief.

0 coins

Have you tried using Claimyr? I was in the exact same boat - kept getting disconnected after hours on hold. Using their service was the only way I actually got through to a human. They basically wait on hold for you then call you when they have an agent. Talking to an agent got my refund released so fast after weeks of nothing happening. claimyr.com

never heard of it but at this point ill try anything. thanks for the tip!

This whole process is why I always adjust my withholding to get as close to zero refund as possible. No waiting, no offset issues, no dealing with the IRS's broken systems. Take control of your own money instead of giving the government an interest-free loan all year.

0 coins

Not everyone has that option. Some of us get refundable credits that can only come as a refund.

0 coins

Fair point - I should have considered that. Credits like EITC and Child Tax Credit can make a huge difference for families.

0 coins

Anyone having trouble even accessing their transcript to check? The IRS website keeps giving me errors when I try to log in.

0 coins

The website is notoriously buggy. Try early morning (like 5-6am) or late night when traffic is lower. Also clear your cache and cookies before trying again.

0 coins

I had the same issue! Try using a different browser. Chrome worked for me when Firefox kept failing.

0 coins

I wonder if bank type matters too? I use a credit union and my government deposits always seem to take an extra day compared to friends with major banks.

0 coins

Yes! This is actually a real factor. Credit unions often batch process ACH transfers while bigger banks might process them throughout the day. Also online banks like Chime sometimes post government deposits up to 2 days earlier than traditional banks.

0 coins

Dealt with this last year. The most frustrating part was seeing the amount change on WMR without any explanation about the offset. Literally thought my refund was stolen until I called and found out about an old debt I didnt even know I had. The whole system needs more transparency.

0 coins

OMG THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!!! I was about to lose my mind thinking something went wrong with my refund. My DDD was Tuesday with an offset for child support (which is fine, I knew about it). But when nothing showed up in my account yesterday I started panicking. This gives me some peace of mind.

0 coins

glad i could help! they really should make this more clear in the system instead of making us all freak out

0 coins

have you checked your transcript? sometimes there are additional codes that appear after the DDD

0 coins

I tried but the transcript site keeps crashing on me. Gonna try again tomorrow morning.

0 coins

My experience last year with an offset: DDD was on a Thursday, money actually hit my account the following Tuesday. So 5 days seems about right. The IRS and Treasury don't exactly operate at Silicon Valley speeds lol

0 coins

You managed to speak to a human at the IRS? That's the most impressive part of this whole post tbh

0 coins

For real 💯 I've been trying for weeks with no luck

0 coins

Not OP but I was only able to get through by using claimyr.com - it was the only way I could actually speak to a person after trying for days on my own. Talking to an agent directly got my issue resolved in minutes instead of weeks of waiting and wondering.

0 coins

thanks for the tip! never heard of that before but might try it

0 coins

Protip: if you want to avoid offsets completely, check out the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) website. You can see if you have any debts in the system BEFORE you file your taxes. That way you can address them directly or plan accordingly.

0 coins

This is solid advice! I wish I had known about this years ago. You can also call their automated line at 800-304-3107 to check if you have any offsets.

0 coins

I literally just got off the phone with the IRS about this exact situation (after trying for DAYS to get through). My DDD was April 2nd with an offset for student loans. The rep told me the exact same thing - have to wait 5 days before they can even look into it. This bureaucracy is mind numbing.

0 coins

Anyone else having trouble understanding all the different codes on their transcripts? I'm looking at mine and have no idea what half of this stuff means or how it relates to my offset and refund timing.

0 coins

I was in the same boat - the transcript is like reading hieroglyphics! I finally tried taxr.ai and it literally translated everything into plain english and explained what was happening with my refund. It saved me so much stress trying to figure it all out. https://taxr.ai

0 coins

oh nice, ill check that out. beats trying to google every random code i see!

0 coins

IRS codes are the WORST. Code 570 had me panicking until I realized it was just part of the normal process for my situation.
