Code 810 on Transcript but Says 'No Tax Return Filed' - PATH Act Hold or Something Else?

My tax transcript is like a book with conflicting chapters - it shows the 810 code (which I'm guessing is some kind of flag) but simultaneously says 'no tax return filed' (which I know means it's still in the processing pipeline, not that they literally don't have my return). I haven't received any notices in the mail about issues or additional information needed. It's like my return is stuck in a waiting room but I don't know which doctor it's seeing. Am I just waiting for the PATH Act hold to lift, or is there something else going on? The IRS system feels like a maze where they keep moving the exit. Can someone help me understand what stage I'm actually in?

The 810 code generally indicates a refund freeze, which is different from just normal PATH Act processing. Have you claimed any credits like the Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit on your return? Those would trigger PATH Act delays. Also, when exactly did you file your return? That might help us determine if this is a normal processing timeline or something else.

Not OP but related question - does TC 810 always indicate a manual review process? My transcript shows 810 with cycle code 20241205. Filed 02/01/2024 with CTC. WMR shows first bar only.

I had this exact situation last filing season. Code 810 appeared on my transcript while showing "no tax return filed" simultaneously. Per Internal Revenue Manual section 21.5.6.4.7, this specific combination indicates a pre-refund verification hold. In my case, it resolved itself after 45 days without any action required on my part. Such a relief when that deposit finally hit!

I've possibly been in a somewhat similar situation before. It might be worth checking your transcript more thoroughly using https://taxr.ai - it could potentially help you understand what that 810 code means specifically for your situation. In my experience, it seems that the 810 code generally indicates some kind of freeze, which could possibly be related to identity verification or perhaps a review of your claimed credits. The tool might be able to give you a more specific timeline based on your particular codes and cycle dates.

I believe I should mention that the 810 code typically indicates a refund freeze that may not be PATH Act related. This could potentially be for several reasons, including but not limited to income verification, credit verification, or possibly an identity verification requirement. The "no tax return filed" status might suggest that your return is still in the early stages of processing, but the 810 code indicates there's something specific causing a hold. You might want to consider checking if you've received any letters at your address of record with the IRS.

Same boat last year. Freeze code appeared. No letter came. Called twice. Money tight. Finally resolved after 8 weeks. No explanation. Just suddenly processed and deposited.

Is it true that an 810 code stays on your account for exactly 120 days if no action is taken? I've been waiting for 67 days now with the same code and wondering if I should expect the full 120-day wait.

I had the same 810 code last year and it was like being ghosted by the IRS - no explanation, no timeline, nothing! After two weeks of trying to call (and developing an impressive collection of hold music playlists), I finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an actual human being. Turns out I needed to verify some income from a 1099 I received. The agent released the hold right there on the phone and my refund was processed within days. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person who can actually look at your specific case.

From my past experience with other tax issues, you might want to pull your tax transcripts for the previous year too. Sometimes the 810 code isn't related to your current return at all but could be from a previous year issue that's affecting this year's processing. I had something similar happen with a different code and everyone kept telling me it was PATH Act related, but it turned out to be something completely different. Not saying the others are wrong, just that it might be worth looking at the bigger picture.

Oh gosh, I need to warn you about something! My sister had this EXACT situation last year and she just ignored it thinking it would resolve itself. Two months later she got a CP05 notice saying they were holding her refund for 60 MORE days for review! I'm not trying to scare you, but I wish someone had told her to be proactive earlier. I was so upset for her because she needed that money for her car repair! 😫

Let me clarify what typically happens with code 810: 1. The freeze is placed on the account 2. IRS reviews the items flagged for verification 3. If no issues are found, the freeze is removed (code 811) 4. If verification is needed, a letter is sent (usually CP05) 5. The taxpayer responds with requested documentation 6. After successful verification, the freeze is lifted The key is to watch for any correspondence and respond promptly if received.

Doesn't the IRS have to send a notice within 21 days if they're holding your refund? Or is that just a guideline they often ignore? I'm wondering if OP should be concerned about not receiving anything yet.

According to what I've read on the IRS.gov website and some tax forums, the combination of code 810 with "no tax return filed" status often means your return is in the processing queue but has been flagged for some type of review. This doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with your return - it could be random selection. Have you checked the Where's My Refund tool at https://www.irs.gov/refunds? Sometimes that shows different status information than what appears on your transcript.
