Closed Credit Karma Account - Need Online Tax Service with Refund Advance for Disability

I'm so frustrated and upset right now! šŸ˜” My Credit Karma spending account got closed and they absolutely refuse to reopen it, which means I can't get the advance from Turbo Tax anymore. I need to find another online tax program that offers refund advances. Due to my disability, I'm not able to physically go to a tax office, so I NEED an online option. I've been using Turbo Tax for years but now I'm stuck without access to an advance that I was counting on. Anyone know alternatives that might work for my situation? I'm open to suggestions but skeptical about switching platforms after all these years...

Think of tax filing options like fishing - you need the right bait for the right fish. For your situation, H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt both offer online filing with refund advance options. It's like having a backup generator when your power goes out - they're solid alternatives when TurboTax isn't working for you. H&R Block's refund advance is particularly accessible for people with mobility issues since everything can be done online, and their verification process doesn't necessarily require the same banking setup as TurboTax/Credit Karma.

I tried H&R Block last year when I had issues with TurboTax. My experience: ā€¢ Their advance came through in about 24 hours ā€¢ The amount was smaller than advertised ā€¢ Their fees were higher than I expected ā€¢ The interface was less intuitive than TurboTax Just be prepared for a learning curve if you switch platforms.

This is excellent advice regarding the RAL (Refund Anticipation Loan) options. I appreciate the breakdown of alternatives. I've been in tax preparation for 8 years and can confirm H&R Block's online platform has significantly improved their verification protocols for the 2024 tax season specifically to address these banking issues.

I would suggest considering TaxSlayer as an alternative. They offer refund advances, and their process works as follows: 1. Create an account on TaxSlayer.com 2. Complete your tax return through their online system 3. Select the refund advance option during the filing process 4. Verify your identity through their secure portal 5. Choose how you want to receive your advance (they typically offer prepaid card options) 6. Submit your return The advance amount is typically available within 24-48 hours after IRS acceptance of your return. I should note that their advance amounts may be lower than what TurboTax offers, and there may be some fees associated with the prepaid card, so please review all terms carefully before proceeding.

I used TaxSlayer exactly 14 days ago and got approved for a $1,250 advance within 37 hours of IRS acceptance. Their interface was a bit confusing at first but their disability accommodations were actually better than TurboTax in my experience. They also have 24/7 chat support which helped me through 3 specific questions I had about my disability credits.

OMG been there w/ the closed acct nightmare! šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø If u need to talk to the IRS about any refund issues later (happens ALL THE TIME w/ advances), don't waste days trying to call them directly. I used Claimyr.com last yr when my advance got messed up and they got me thru to an actual human at the IRS in like 20 mins! Saved me literal days of frustration. Their YT video explains it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - total lifesaver when ur dealing w/ disability + tax stress!

I had almost the exact same situation last year with my Capital One account getting restricted right when I needed my TurboTax advance. I remember how stressful it was with my mobility issues too. Have you looked into FreeTaxUSA? They don't offer advances directly, but I found they processed my refund WAY faster than TurboTax ever did - I got my actual refund in 8 days which was faster than the advance would have come through anyway. Would that timeline potentially work for you?

You might want to consider that refund advances often come with somewhat hidden costs that can potentially reduce your overall refund amount. In many cases, the convenience of getting money a few days earlier could cost you somewhere between $25-100 in fees, depending on the provider and amount. It might be worth exploring direct deposit options with the IRS instead, which typically process within about 21 days for most returns, though this timeframe can occasionally be longer during peak filing periods. I'm a bit concerned that switching tax platforms mid-season could potentially create verification issues that might actually delay your refund further.

Thank you for pointing this out! I was in a similar situation last year - needed money fast due to disability expenses. I skipped the advance and just filed with TaxAct which was cheaper than TurboTax. My refund came in 12 days which wasn't much longer than the advance would have taken anyway. Saved about $75 in hidden fees that I really needed for medications. Sometimes the "fast money" isn't worth it!

I'm not sure I fully agree with this... are we certain that all refund advances have fees? I've been looking into this carefully and some services advertise "no fee" advances, though I suppose there could be other costs built in somewhere. Has anyone actually confirmed getting a truly free advance recently?

Have you considered reaching out to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program? They offer free tax preparation services for people with disabilities, and many locations now provide remote options due to COVID adaptations they've maintained. While they don't offer advances directly, they might be able to expedite your filing to get your refund faster. Do you qualify for any special credits related to your disability that might increase your refund amount? What's your timeline for needing the funds?
