Tax Refund Advance with Credit Karma/TurboTax - Not What I Expected
First time trying to get a tax refund advance and I had to use Credit Karma with TurboTax to qualify. Who else thinks it's ridiculous they won't let you send the advance to your regular bank account? š I'm definitely never using Credit Karma again! Their "5 days early" promise is such a joke š Still waiting and it's been a week. Any tips for a newbie on better options for next year? I'm all ears!

Tax refund advances often come with restrictions that aren't clearly advertised. As of March 28, 2024, most tax advance products require you to use their specific banking solution or debit card. This is because they're technically short-term loans against your anticipated refund, not early access to your actual IRS refund. The "5 days early" claim typically refers to receiving your refund 5 days before the IRS would normally deposit it, but that timeline starts after the IRS approves your return, not when you file. Many people are experiencing this confusion during the current tax season.

Do these advance products affect the actual processing time of your return with the IRS? I've heard conflicting information about whether selecting a refund advance flags your return for additional scrutiny.

This explanation really helps clear things up! It's like when a store offers you store credit instead of cash back - they're keeping you in their ecosystem. Thanks for breaking down how these advances actually work!

Just file directly with the IRS Free File if your income qualifies. No fees, no advances, no gimmicks. Your money comes straight to your bank account. These tax prep companies make billions off people who don't realize they can file for free. I've saved hundreds over the years by avoiding these advance products.

I'm wondering if the Free File option works for more complicated tax situations? I have some self-employment income along with W-2s, and I'm not sure if I would qualify...

Been there with the refund advance frustration! ā¢ Filed early February this year ā¢ Got promised "quick advance" ā¢ Ended up waiting 3 weeks ā¢ Called IRS 17 times with no answer Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to actually reach an IRS agent. Got through in 25 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. Agent confirmed my refund was approved but delayed because of the advance product I chose. Would have saved so much stress if I'd called earlier!

I had a similar experience last year. According to IRS Publication 1345, these advance products are considered Refund Anticipation Loans (RALs) and technically have no impact on IRS processing. However, I found that using one did seem to delay my actual refund by about 10 days compared to previous years. The companies don't tell you that their "advance" often means your actual refund takes longer to process because of the additional verification steps involved. It's a trade-off that wasn't worth it for me.

I've tested nearly every tax filing option over the past 7 years. Credit Karma's advance was actually one of the worst experiences I had in 2022. Their banking partner took 9 days to process what should have been immediate. Last year I switched to direct filing through the IRS portal and received my refund in 8 days total - faster than any "advance" product ever delivered. The advance products are basically paying a fee to access a portion of your own money.

The IRS direct file program is only available in certain states right now, I believe. Do you know if they're expanding it soon? Filing deadline is coming up fast and people need to know their options!

Used FreeTaxUSA this year. No advance needed. Filed February 12th. Full refund deposited February 21st. No fees. No hassle. No special card required. Just my regular bank account. Couldn't be happier.

If you need your refund quickly, avoid advances completely. They add exactly 5-12 days to processing time in my experience. The "advance" is usually only 25-50% of your expected refund anyway. Better option: file electronically, use direct deposit, and don't claim certain credits that slow processing. I've tracked this for 6 years straight with precise filing dates. Simple returns without advances consistently arrive faster.
