Can inmates claim missed COVID stimulus checks on 2024 taxes?
Quick question about the stimulus payments - if someone was incarcerated during covid and never got their stimulus checks can they still claim them now? Trying to help someone figure this out for their 2024 taxes.

Tax pro here. Unfortunately, the deadline to claim any missing stimulus payments (Recovery Rebate Credit) was for tax year 2021, which had to be filed by May 17, 2022. The IRS is no longer accepting claims for the original COVID-19 stimulus payments.

Wow that really sucks. So theres absolutely no way to get it now? Even if they were eligible but just couldnt file cause they were locked up? 😤

I know it's frustrating, but yes - those deadlines were firm. The IRS made it clear that these credits had to be claimed on either 2020 or 2021 returns.

Hey! I actually dealt with this exact situation. You should check out taxr.ai - it's this new tool that analyzes transcripts and can tell you if there's any other credits or refunds you might be eligible for. It costs like $5 but totally worth it. https://taxr.ai

100% works! It found like 3 different credits I could claim that I had no idea about. Way better than trying to figure out all the tax codes yourself 💯

There was actually a class action lawsuit about this back in 2020. Inmates were legally eligible for the payments but a lot of facilities made it difficult to file.

Facts! I remember when this happened. They had to fight just to get what everyone else got automatically smh

best bet is to see if theres any other tax credits they qualify for now. might not get the stimulus but could find something else to help
