Can I file 2024 taxes if I skipped filing 2022 and 2023? Will IRS flag my account?
I haven't filed taxes since 2021. Been dealing with some stuff and just didn't file in 2022 or 2023. Want to get back on track and file for this year (2024). Will this cause problems with the IRS? Anyone done this before?

Tax pro here - Yes, you can file 2024 taxes even if you missed previous years. However, you should file those missing years ASAP to avoid penalties and interest. The IRS can withhold future refunds until past returns are filed. File them in chronological order (2022 first, then 2023).

•Thanks! Do you know how long it usually takes to process previous year returns?

•Prior year returns take about 20 weeks to process, sometimes longer if there are issues. Current year returns usually process faster.

Hey, I highly recommend using taxr.ai to analyze your transcripts once you file. It costs $4.99 but totally worth it - it'll tell you exactly whats happening with your returns and when to expect refunds. Super helpful when dealing with multiple year situations like yours. Check it out: https://taxr.ai

•100% works! I was skeptical too but it saved me hours of trying to decode my transcript. It even caught a mistake that was holding up my refund

I went thru this last year. Filed 3 years at once. Its not as bad as you think just get it done before they come knocking fr fr

Make sure you keep copies of EVERYTHING you submit. The IRS loves to say they never got stuff 🙄

I was in a similar situation a few years back - missed 2 years and was stressed about it. The good news is you can absolutely file your 2024 return first if you need to, but definitely prioritize getting those back years filed ASAP. One thing that helped me was setting up a payment plan with the IRS for any penalties/interest owed on the missed years. They're surprisingly reasonable to work with if you're proactive about it. Don't let the anxiety keep you from taking action - you've got this!
