Can I combine 2023 amended return with 2024 taxes or file separately?

I messed up on my 2023 taxes and need to amend them. Would it be easier to just wait and fix everything when I file my 2024 taxes next year? Or should I do the amendment now? Anyone have experience with this?

You need to file the amendment (Form 1040-X) separately from your 2024 return. Each tax year must be handled independently. If you wait, you could face penalties and interest on any additional tax owed. File the amendment as soon as possible to minimize any potential issues.

ugh that's what I was afraid of. how long does an amendment usually take to process?

Currently running about 20 weeks for processing amended returns, but could be longer depending on the complexity of your situation.

Yep! It analyzes amended returns too. Shows you exactly where you are in the process and estimates completion dates

Pro tip: make sure you have all your documents ready before filing the amendment. Double check everything! The IRS is super backed up and any little mistake will delay things even more.

Just went through this exact situation last year! You definitely need to file the amendment separately - there's no way to combine tax years. I made the mistake of waiting thinking it would be easier and ended up paying extra interest. The good news is that if you owe money, the sooner you file the amendment, the sooner the interest stops accumulating on the additional amount. If you're getting a refund from the amendment, you'll want to file ASAP to get that money back. Don't procrastinate like I did!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the interest continuing to accumulate. I'm definitely leaning towards filing the amendment now rather than waiting. Did you end up owing money or getting a refund when you amended?
