Can I file my 2023 taxes while waiting for my 2022 amended tax return to be accepted?
I just realized I messed up form 8606 on my 2022 tax return, so I sent my amended return via mail yesterday (2/12/2024). When I checked the IRS website, it says processing can take more than 20 weeks - which would push me past the April filing deadline for 2023 taxes. I'm worried about waiting that long to file my 2023 return. Is it okay to go ahead and file my 2023 taxes while my 2022 amended return is still being processed? Or do I need to wait until the amended return is fully accepted before submitting this year's taxes? I don't want to cause any problems or delays with either return.

Yes, you can absolutely file your 2023 tax return while your 2022 amended return is still processing. These are treated as separate filings by the IRS, and there's no requirement to wait for an amended return to be processed before filing for the current tax year. The only exception would be if your 2022 amendment directly impacts something on your 2023 return - like if you're carrying forward a loss or credit. In that case, you'd want to make sure your 2023 return reflects what you submitted in your amendment, not what was on your original 2022 return.

•What if the amended return changes my AGI for 2022? Won't that cause problems since the IRS verification process sometimes checks the previous year's AGI?

•That's a good question about the AGI verification. For electronic filing verification purposes, you should use the AGI from your original 2022 return, not the amended amount. The IRS's e-file verification system will be looking for the AGI from your originally processed return. If you're carrying forward any values that would be changed by your amendment, just make sure to use the corrected figures on your 2023 return, even though your amendment hasn't been processed yet.

I went through this exact situation last year with form 8606 too! I found this amazing tool called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that helped me figure out how to handle filing while my amendment was processing. It analyzes your tax documents and gives personalized advice on situations like this. I uploaded my original and amended returns, and it highlighted exactly what I needed to know about filing my next year's taxes during the waiting period.

•How does that work exactly? Can it actually tell you what numbers to use from your amended return on your next year's taxes?

•Sounds interesting but I'm always skeptical about tax tools. How does it handle security with all those sensitive tax documents?

•It works by analyzing both returns and pointing out which specific numbers might affect your current year's filing. For example, it flagged my retirement contribution basis that changed on Form 8606 and explained how that would impact my current year's calculations. Regarding security, they use bank-level encryption for all uploads and document analysis. Documents are processed securely and they don't store your returns after analysis is complete unless you specifically request that. I was initially concerned about that too but their security explanation convinced me.

Just wanted to follow up about my experience with taxr.ai that was mentioned earlier. I decided to try it despite my initial skepticism, and I'm really glad I did! Uploaded my original and amended returns, and it immediately identified that my IRA basis tracking on Form 8606 would affect my current year's return. The analysis showed me exactly what numbers to use while waiting for my amendment to process. Saved me hours of research and probably prevented another amendment. The peace of mind was totally worth it!

If you're worried about the 20+ week processing time for your amended return, I'd recommend using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation waiting forever on an amended return. Their service got me connected to an actual IRS agent in 15 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own! Check out how it works: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. The agent was able to confirm that my amendment was in the system and told me exactly what to do with my current year's return while waiting.

•How does this even work? The IRS phone lines are impossible to get through. Are you saying this service somehow jumps the queue?

•Yeah right. I've been trying to reach the IRS for months about my amended return. No way this actually works. Sounds like a scam to me.

•It's not queue jumping exactly - they use an automated system that constantly redials the IRS using optimal calling patterns and holds your place in line. When they reach an agent, they connect you immediately. It's completely legitimate and works with the IRS's existing phone system. No, it's definitely not a scam! I was skeptical too. Their system just handles the painful part of constantly redialing and waiting on hold. Once I was connected to an actual IRS agent, I got confirmation that my amendment was received and properly logged in their system, plus guidance on how to handle my current year's taxes.

I need to eat my words about Claimyr. After posting my skeptical comment, I tried it out of desperation since I was getting nowhere with the IRS about my amended return. I couldn't believe it actually worked! Got connected to an IRS rep in about 20 minutes, and they confirmed my amended return was in the system and gave me the go-ahead to file my current year taxes without waiting. The agent even noted my account so there wouldn't be confusion when both were processing simultaneously. Saved me weeks of stress and uncertainty.

Something else to consider - if you're expecting a refund for 2023, you definitely don't want to wait for your 2022 amendment to finish processing. File your 2023 return on time to get your refund. If you end up owing money for 2023, you still need to file on time and pay what you owe to avoid penalties, regardless of your amendment status.

•What about payment plans? If both my amended 2022 and my 2023 return end up with me owing money, can I set up one payment plan to cover both?

•Generally, the IRS will combine all your tax debts into a single payment plan. If you already have a payment plan and then have additional tax debt from a new return, you'll likely need to revise your existing plan to include the new amount. If you don't have a payment plan yet, you can wait until both are processed and then set up a plan for the total amount. Just be aware that penalties and interest will accrue on any unpaid balance from the due date until it's paid in full, regardless of whether you have a payment plan.

I'm in a similar situation but haven't mailed my amended return yet. Did you include any kind of note or explanation with your amended return about the Form 8606 error?

•Always include a detailed explanation with amended returns. I had to amend because of 8606 issues too. I attached a typed explanation clearly stating what changed and why. My amendment was processed without any issues in about 16 weeks.

Based on everyone's advice here, I feel much more confident about moving forward. I did include a detailed explanation with my amended 1040X about the Form 8606 error - basically explained that I incorrectly reported my traditional IRA conversion and needed to correct the basis calculation. For anyone else dealing with Form 8606 amendments, make sure you're crystal clear about what changed because it affects your basis going forward. Since I'm planning to file my 2023 return soon, I'll use the corrected basis amounts from my amendment even though it hasn't been processed yet. Thanks everyone for the reassurance that I don't need to wait for the amendment to clear!
