CA State Tax Refund: $1,832 Authorized 2/19, Scheduled for 2/24 Deposit - How Long Will Chase Bank Take to Process?
I e-filed my CA state return on 2/15/25 and got a notification today (2/19/25) that my refund of $1,932.00 has been authorized for direct deposit. When I checked with the FTB chat support, they told me it was scheduled to be deposited on 02/24/2025 but could take up to 7 business days to actually hit my account. Here's exactly what the FTB chat agent (Glenda) told me at 9:51 AM: "Thank you for your patience. Your 2024 CA state refund in the amount of $1,932.00 was scheduled via direct deposit on 02/24/2025. It can take up to 7 business days from that date for you to receive the deposit." That seems like an eternity when they've already approved it! I mean, I've already waited since filing on 2/15, and now they're saying it could be up to 7 MORE business days after 2/24/25 before I actually see the money in my account. That's potentially almost two weeks from my filing date! I was hoping to use that money sooner rather than later. The chat support person (Glenda) couldn't give me any more specific timeframe than "up to 7 business days" which isn't very helpful. Anyone with Chase Bank know how long it typically takes for the money to actually show up after the state says it's been sent? Do you usually see it the same day, or does it really take the full 7 business days they're quoting me? I'm anxious to get this refund and wondering if Chase is typically fast or slow with processing these state refunds.

Former tax professional here. The 7 business day timeframe is standard language from the FTB and is their way of covering all bases. In reality, most direct deposits from the CA FTB hit accounts within 1-3 business days after the scheduled deposit date. Chase specifically tends to be on the quicker side - many of my clients with Chase would see their refunds within 48 hours of the scheduled date. The delay is mostly due to the banking system processing times and not the state holding onto your money. If you don't see it by Monday, then you might want to follow up with Chase to see if there are any pending deposits in their system that haven't posted yet.

Thanks for this info! Really hoping it comes through faster than 7 days. I'll give it until Monday before I start bothering Chase about it.

My experience with Chase has been different. Last year it took a full 5 business days to hit my account after CA FTB said it was processed. Banks can be weird about government deposits sometimes ๐คทโโ๏ธ

Hey y'all - I was in this exact situation last month and was going crazy trying to figure out what was happening with my refund. I finally discovered this tool called taxr.ai that explained everything clearly. It was able to help me understand my entire tax situation including what was happening with my state refund. No more guessing games or waiting on hold forever trying to get answers. Taxr totally helped me understand the whole process and timeframes, highly recommend checking it out at https://taxr.ai instead of stressing like I did!

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It's WAY more than just reading transcripts! I used it for both my federal and state issues. It basically takes all your tax info and breaks everything down in plain English - explains all those weird codes, tells you exact timelines, shows if there are any holds or issues. It even predicted exactly when my deposit would hit which was super accurate! I'm telling everyone about it now because it saved me so much stress and time. I'll never go back to the old way of trying to figure things out myself.

Trust me, I had the same reaction at first! But it's legit the most helpful tax tool I've ever used - and I've tried EVERYTHING over the years. It's not like those scammy tax sites at all. Literally answered all my questions about my return in seconds that would have taken hours of research otherwise. Worth checking out if you're dealing with any tax confusion.

After waiting 2 weeks for my CA refund with no movement, I finally used this calling app (claimyr.com) that got me connected with an actual human at the FTB in less than 20 minutes. Explained my situation and they found that there was a verification flag on my account that nobody had told me about! The agent cleared it right away and my deposit hit my account the next day. Talking to a real person solved in minutes what would have been weeks more waiting. Definitely the fastest way to get direct answers about your refund situation.

Does this actually work? I've been trying to get through to someone at FTB for days.

It absolutely works. I was skeptical too but was desperate after being on hold for hours across multiple days. The service basically navigates all the phone menus and waits on hold for you, then calls you when an agent is ready to talk. Best money I ever spent considering the refund was just sitting there waiting for me to clear up something I didn't even know was an issue.

how much does it cost tho? seems like we shouldnt have to pay just to talk to a govt agency we already pay taxes to... ๐

I get what you're saying - we definitely shouldn't have to pay extra just to get basic service. But when you're waiting on thousands of dollars and cant get through normally, it's worth it to finally get your refund released. Think of it as an investment that pays off immediately when your money finally hits your account!

I have Wells Fargo and for the past 3 years, my CA state refund has always hit exactly 2 business days after the scheduled deposit date. Not sure about Chase but most major banks seem pretty consistent with their processing times.

Don't trust those "scheduled" dates too much. Mine was "scheduled" for 2/10/25 but didn't actually hit my Chase account until 2/18/25. When I called FTB they said there was some verification process that happened even after approval. The system is so broken its not even funny.

the whole california tax system is a joke. took me 3 months to get my refund last year because they "needed additional verification" but never bothered to tell me until i called and complained

It's now been 10 business days since my "scheduled deposit" and Chase still shows nothing. Called the FTB and they said they sent it. Called Chase and they have no record. Now I have to wait for the FTB to trace the deposit which could take up to 90 DAYS. Be prepared for this possibility...

Oh no, that sounds awful! Did you double-check that your bank account info was entered correctly on your return?

Yep, triple checked. Same account I've used for years for tax refunds. FTB says it sometimes happens when banks reject deposits for "security reasons" but Chase says that's not a thing. So now I'm stuck in bureaucratic hell. ๐ซ

I'm a banker (not at Chase). Here's what happens behind the scenes: The FTB initiates an ACH transaction which usually takes 1-2 days to process through the Federal Reserve system. Then once it hits your bank, they may hold it for 0-1 days depending on their policies. So realistically, 3 business days is typical, but they say 7 to account for any delays or issues. Direct deposits are almost always faster than paper checks tho!

This is really helpful info! Do you know if weekends count in this timing at all or just business days?

Just business days. The ACH system only operates Monday-Friday (excluding federal holidays). So if they initiate it on a Friday, you probably won't see it until Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week.

Anyone else notice that the FTB chat representatives give different answers depending on who you talk to? I chatted 3 different times and got 3 different timeframes for the same refund. One said 1-3 days, another said 5-7, and a third said up to 10 business days. Like, how do they not have consistent information?!

Check if ur refund is showing as "pending" in ur Chase account. Sometimes it shows up there before it actually posts. You can usually see pending deposits if u log into the website (not always visible in the app).

Good suggestion! Just checked and nothing showing in pending yet. Will keep an eye on it.

I tried everything to figure out what was happening with my CA state refund and kept getting different answers. Finally used taxr.ai and it showed me exactly what was going on with both my federal and state returns. It explained all the weird tax codes, showed me the actual status of my refund, and even predicted when I'd get my money. It was actually accurate too! Yes but it was 100% worth it with how much time it saved me and the peace of mind. No more guessing or waiting on hold forever. I wasted way more money on gas driving to the tax office trying to get answers before finding this.

I filed on 2/12/25, got the "refund scheduled" message on 2/17/25, and the money hit my Chase account at exactly 12:01 AM on 2/19/25. So for me it was exactly 2 business days. Good luck!

Just a heads up - make sure the account number you provided is correct. I had a situation where I transposed two digits and my refund got rejected by the bank and had to be reissued as a paper check which took an additional 8 weeks. Check your return to make sure all the banking info is 100% accurate.

Just double-checked my return and all the banking info is correct. So that shouldn't be the issue in my case. Thanks for the reminder though!

fun fact: if u call the FTB automated system (not a live person) and enter your info, it sometimes gives more updated information than the website or even the chat agents. That number is 800-338-0505 and u can check refund status 24/7.

This is actually good advice. The automated system told me my refund was sent 2 days before the website updated.

I spent WEEKS trying to figure out what was going on with my refund. Kept getting the runaround. Finally used claimyr.com to actually get through to someone at the tax office, and they fixed my issue in like 5 minutes. Turns out there was a simple verification flag that could have been resolved instantly if I'd been able to talk to someone sooner. My deposit hit my account 3 days later. If you need actual help and not automated responses, highly recommend this route.
