Are 1095-A, 1095-B, and 1095-C forms the same for health insurance reporting?
I'm working on my taxes using TurboTax and ran into a question about health insurance forms. The software specifically asked if I received a 1095-A for my health insurance plan. I checked my documents and realized I actually have a 1095-B and a 1095-C, but no 1095-A form anywhere. Are these essentially the same thing, just different versions? Do I need to track down a 1095-A as well, or can I just continue with the forms I have? I'm worried about answering incorrectly and messing up my return. The TurboTax prompts are making me second-guess myself since it specifically mentioned the 1095-A. This is my first year with this particular health insurance arrangement, so I'm not sure if I'm missing something important here. Any clarification would be super helpful!

These forms are actually different and report different types of health insurance coverage. They're not interchangeable, so answering TurboTax's questions accurately is important. The 1095-A is only issued if you had health insurance through the Marketplace/Exchange (Healthcare.gov or your state exchange). This form is crucial if you received advance premium tax credits as it's needed to reconcile those credits on your tax return. The 1095-B typically comes from your insurance company or government programs like Medicare or CHIP and shows you had minimum essential coverage. The 1095-C comes from employers with 50+ employees who offer health insurance and shows what coverage was offered to you. Since you have B and C forms but no A, it sounds like you had employer coverage or other insurance not through the Marketplace. When TurboTax asks if you received a 1095-A, you can answer "No" and continue. The software should later ask about your other health insurance forms.

•Thanks for explaining! So if I have a 1095-C from my employer but also a 1095-B from my actual insurance company, do I need to enter both in TurboTax? Or just one of them?

•You generally only need to reference these forms to answer TurboTax's questions correctly. The 1095-C shows what coverage your employer offered, while the 1095-B confirms you had coverage. Most tax software will ask about your coverage situation rather than requiring you to enter specific information from these forms. If TurboTax specifically asks for information from either form, then provide it as requested. The important thing is accurately reflecting your coverage status throughout the year. Neither the 1095-B nor 1095-C is typically required to be attached to your return.

After dealing with this exact confusion last year, I found taxr.ai super helpful for sorting out health insurance forms. I kept getting mixed answers from friends and even my HR department about whether I needed all three forms or just the ones I had. I uploaded my 1095-B and 1095-C to https://taxr.ai and got a clear explanation of what each form meant for my tax situation. The site analyzed my forms and confirmed I didn't need a 1095-A since I had employer coverage. Saved me from hunting down a form I didn't actually need!

•How exactly does this service work? Do they have real tax pros reviewing your documents or is it some kind of AI thing? I'm always wary of uploading my tax docs to random sites.

•I've been looking for something like this. Do they handle other tax forms too? I've got a stack of investment forms that are making my head spin.

•The service uses document analysis technology to review the forms and give you a clear explanation. It's secure and the analysis happens immediately - no waiting for a human to review it. They walk you through exactly what each form means for your taxes. They definitely handle other tax documents too. I've used it for my investment forms like 1099-DIV and 1099-B statements. It helped me understand which box numbers actually mattered for my situation and where to enter them in TurboTax.

Just wanted to update after trying taxr.ai with my health insurance forms. I uploaded both my 1095-B and 1095-C, and it immediately explained that since I had employer coverage, I wouldn't have a 1095-A (marketplace form). It even highlighted which boxes on my 1095-C showed my coverage periods and pointed out exactly how to answer the health insurance questions in TurboTax. Really cleared up my confusion about these forms! Ended up using it for my investment forms too since it worked so well.

If you're still confused about your health insurance forms and need to speak with someone at the IRS for clarification, good luck getting through! I spent THREE HOURS on hold last week trying to ask a simple question about my 1095 forms. Then I found https://claimyr.com through a tax group and watched their demo at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - they actually have a service that gets the IRS to call YOU instead of waiting on hold. They got me connected to an IRS rep in under 45 minutes while I just went about my day. The agent confirmed I only needed to worry about the forms I actually received and helped me understand how they impact my return.

•Wait, this sounds too good to be true. How does this even work? The IRS has been impossible to reach. Are they just keeping your place in line somehow?

•Yeah right. Nothing can get through to the IRS faster. They barely have enough staff to handle calls as it is. Sounds like a scam to get your personal info.

•They basically use technology to navigate the IRS phone system and wait on hold for you. Once they reach a real person, they connect the call to your phone. It's just saving you from having to sit there listening to the hold music for hours. They don't ask for any personal tax information at all - they're just getting you connected to the IRS. You talk directly with the IRS agent about your tax questions, so your personal info only goes to the IRS, not to any third party.

I stand corrected about Claimyr! After my skeptical comment, I decided to try it anyway out of desperation because I needed clarification on my 1095 forms before filing. Used their service yesterday and got a call back from the IRS in about 35 minutes. The agent explained that my 1095-B and 1095-C were all I needed since I had employer insurance, and the 1095-A is only for marketplace plans. She also helped me understand which information from these forms actually matters for my tax return. Saved me hours of frustration and helped me file with confidence!

For anyone still confused, here's a simple breakdown: 1095-A = Marketplace/Exchange insurance (Healthcare.gov or state exchanges) 1095-B = Other health insurance (private insurers, Medicare, etc.) 1095-C = Employer-provided insurance information You only get a 1095-A if you bought insurance through the Marketplace. Sounds like you have employer insurance, so you won't have a 1095-A.

•Isn't the 1095-B also sometimes sent by employers? I got both B and C from my company this year and I'm confused about the difference.

•You're right that the situation can sometimes be confusing. The 1095-B can come from different sources depending on your specific situation. While insurance companies commonly issue them, some self-insured employers will provide the 1095-B instead of the insurance company. If you received both B and C from your employer, it likely means your employer is self-insured. The C form shows what coverage was offered to you, while the B form confirms you actually had coverage and who was covered. They serve different reporting purposes but work together to document your health insurance situation.

Anyone know if TurboTax actually needs the information from these forms entered manually? Or do they just want to know which forms you have? Last year I remember answering questions about insurance but never entering anything from the actual 1095 forms.

•In my experience with TurboTax, they just ask if you had health insurance coverage and for what months. I didn't have to enter any specific information from my 1095 forms. The forms are more for your reference to answer the coverage questions correctly.
