TurboTax keeps rejecting my tax return because I don't have a 1095-A form, only 1095-B
So I'm in the final steps of filing my taxes through TurboTax, and I keep hitting this roadblock. The software is telling me I need to submit a 1095-A form, but my health insurance only provided me with a 1095-B form. I've tried multiple times to get through this step but TurboTax won't let me proceed without the 1095-A. I've checked my online account with my insurance provider and confirmed they only issue 1095-B forms. I've never received a 1095-A and don't think I'm supposed to get one based on my healthcare situation (employer-provided insurance through UnitedHealthcare). I'm getting really frustrated because the filing deadline is approaching and I can't seem to bypass this. Does anyone know how to handle this situation? Can I substitute the 1095-B somehow or is there a way to tell TurboTax that I don't need a 1095-A? I don't want to have to start over with different tax software at this point.

This is a common issue that causes a lot of confusion. The 1095-A form is specifically for people who got their health insurance through the Marketplace (Healthcare.gov or state exchanges). The 1095-B form is typically issued by private insurers or government programs like Medicare or Medicaid. If TurboTax is asking for a 1095-A and you have employer-provided insurance, it sounds like something might be incorrectly entered in your return that's making TurboTax think you had Marketplace coverage. Look for any questions about health insurance coverage and make sure you've selected employer-provided coverage rather than Marketplace coverage. There should be a specific section in TurboTax about health insurance where you can indicate what type of coverage you had. Once you correct this, it should stop asking for the 1095-A form. You generally don't need to upload or enter information from your 1095-B for tax filing purposes unless you had a coverage gap.

•Thanks for this explanation, but I'm still confused. When I go to the healthcare section in TurboTax, it specifically asks if I received a 1095-A. If I select "no" it actually takes me back to the beginning of that section and won't let me proceed. Is there some specific wording I need to look for? I swear I've tried everything.

•Look for a question that asks about the source of your health insurance before it asks about forms. There should be options like "Employer provided," "Marketplace/Exchange," "Medicare," etc. Make sure you're selecting "Employer provided" and not "Marketplace/Exchange." If you've already done that correctly, you might need to restart the healthcare section completely. Sometimes there's a "clear health insurance" option in TurboTax that lets you start that section over without affecting the rest of your return. Alternatively, you could try contacting TurboTax support directly as there might be a specific glitch happening with your return.

I dealt with this exact issue last year and was pulling my hair out until I found taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai). They have this document analysis feature that instantly identified why TurboTax was getting confused with my health insurance forms. Turned out I had accidentally checked a box in the health insurance section that triggered the 1095-A requirement, even though I had employer insurance. Their system pointed out exactly where the mistake was and showed me how to fix it in TurboTax. Saved me hours of frustration and getting stuck in those endless TurboTax support queues.

•How does taxr.ai work exactly? Do you just upload your tax documents to it and it tells you what's wrong? I'm always paranoid about uploading sensitive financial docs to random websites.

•Does it actually work with TurboTax directly or does it just give you advice that you have to implement yourself? Sounds interesting but wondering if it's worth the hassle of trying another service when I'm already so deep into my return.

•You upload your tax docs securely (they use bank-level encryption), and their AI analyzes them and identifies errors or optimization opportunities. It's not connected to TurboTax directly, but it gives you very specific guidance on what to change in whatever tax software you're using. They don't store your documents permanently and you can delete everything after you're done. I totally get the security concern - I was hesitant too until I read through their security practices. They basically point out exactly what's causing your issue and how to fix it.

Just wanted to follow up here - I tried taxr.ai after posting my question and it actually worked perfectly! I uploaded my 1095-B and it immediately identified that I had accidentally selected "Marketplace coverage" in a dropdown menu early in the health insurance section. The system showed me exactly where to go in TurboTax to fix it - I had to go back to the beginning of the health insurance section and change that selection. Once I did that, TurboTax stopped asking for the 1095-A and I was able to finish my return. Would never have figured this out on my own because the mistake was in a completely different screen than where I was getting stuck!

If you're still having issues getting past this TurboTax roadblock and need clarification directly from the IRS, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). After spending 3 days trying to fix a similar health insurance form issue last year, I finally gave up on figuring it out myself and needed to speak with the IRS directly. Instead of waiting on hold for hours (which I tried first), Claimyr got me through to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes who explained exactly what forms I needed based on my specific situation. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c The IRS agent clarified that with employer-provided insurance, I didn't need to worry about the 1095-A at all and walked me through the exact settings to change in TurboTax. That five-minute call saved me days of frustration.

•Wait, how does this actually work? I thought it was impossible to get through to the IRS without waiting for hours. Is this some kind of premium line or something?

•Sorry but this sounds like BS. I've tried everything to get through to the IRS and always end up waiting forever or getting disconnected. No way there's some magical service that gets you through in 20 minutes during tax season.

•It's not a premium line - they use technology that navigates the IRS phone tree and waits on hold for you. When an agent actually picks up, you get a call connecting you directly to them. You just go about your day until your phone rings with an actual IRS agent ready to talk. I was super skeptical too, which is why I included the video link so you can see exactly how it works. It's not magic - they're just handling the horrible hold process for you. I think the reason it works is because they have systems constantly dialing and navigating through the most efficient pathways to actually reach humans at the IRS.

I need to apologize for my skeptical comment earlier. After another hour of getting disconnected from the IRS hotline again today, I gave in and tried Claimyr out of desperation. I'm honestly shocked - I got a call back in about 35 minutes with an actual IRS agent on the line. The agent explained that the 1095-B is all I needed with my employer insurance, and I didn't need to report it on my tax return unless I had a coverage gap. She also explained exactly how to bypass that section in TurboTax (there's a "I don't have this form" option hidden in one of the menus that lets you explain why). This literally saved my return from being late. I'm still kind of stunned it actually worked after so many failed attempts to reach someone myself.

Just want to add one more option - have you tried calling TurboTax support directly? I had a similar issue two years ago and their support team was able to walk me through how to override that section. There's a specific button combination they directed me to that lets you bypass certain form requirements when they don't apply to your situation.

•I tried that first actually! Was on hold for over an hour and then got disconnected. Tried again and got someone who just kept reading from a script about how I needed the 1095-A and couldn't seem to understand that I wasn't supposed to have one. Maybe I just got unlucky with who I talked to though?

•That's frustrating. Their support quality definitely varies depending on who you get. If you try again, specifically ask for a "tax professional" rather than general support. They have different tiers of support, and the general first-line folks often just read from scripts. Another option is to try their chat support through the software itself rather than calling. I've sometimes had better luck getting to someone knowledgeable that way, and you can share your screen so they can see exactly what you're looking at.

Anyone else find it ridiculous that tax software makes these basic things so complicated? My dad used to do his taxes with pencil and paper in like an hour. Now we need AI tools and special phone services just to figure out why TurboTax is demanding forms we don't have!

•Preach! Tax software is supposed to make things easier but sometimes it feels like it's designed to confuse us. I switched to FreeTaxUSA last year and found it much more straightforward than TurboTax. Might be worth considering for next year?

•Thanks for the suggestion! I've heard good things about FreeTaxUSA from others too. Definitely going to look into switching next year. I've been using TurboTax for like 8 years just out of habit, but this year has been particularly frustrating with these form issues.

I had this exact same problem last year! The key thing to understand is that TurboTax sometimes gets "stuck" on requiring a 1095-A if there's any indication earlier in your return that you might have had marketplace coverage. Here's what worked for me: 1. Go back to the very beginning of the health insurance section (not just where you're stuck) 2. Look for the initial question about your insurance source - make sure it says "employer-provided" or "job-based coverage" 3. If you see any mention of "marketplace," "exchange," or "premium tax credits" selected, change those 4. There's also usually a question about whether you received advance premium tax credits - make sure that's marked "No" The 1095-B from your employer insurance is basically just for your records - you typically don't need to enter any information from it into your tax return. Once you fix those initial selections, TurboTax should stop asking for the 1095-A entirely. If you're still stuck, try using the "start over" option just for the health insurance section rather than your whole return. Good luck!
