Anyone have experience with StopIRSDebt for years of unfiled returns?
I've got a pretty overwhelming situation with 7 years of unfiled tax returns. Everything's such a mess that I can't even verify my identity with the IRS anymore - every time I try to file something I just get error messages. Back in 2017 I went through some really dark times and filed exempt for about 7 months. I also never claimed 3 stimulus checks that I was probably eligible for. I've been shopping around for help and a local tax person wants $3600 to handle all 7 years of returns. I also found StopIRSDebt online and they quoted me $2700 for the same work. I'm seriously considering the online option to save $900, but I'm nervous about working with someone I can't meet face to face on something this important. Has anyone used StopIRSDebt before? Is there any reason I shouldn't go with them over the local tax guy?

Having multiple years of unfiled tax returns is definitely stressful, but it's a situation that can be resolved! As someone who's helped folks in similar situations, here's what you should know: The IRS has a program called "First Time Penalty Abatement" that might help reduce what you owe if you've had a good compliance history before this. Also, you generally can still claim refunds for returns filed within 3 years of the due date, which might apply to those stimulus payments. Before hiring anyone, ask specifically about their experience with unfiled returns and IRS collections. The price difference you mentioned isn't unusual, but the quality of service matters more than cost here. National firms like StopIRSDebt often have standardized processes, while local preparers might offer more personalized service.

•Do you think they need an actual tax attorney for this or just an EA or CPA? Also, would the stimulus payments still be claimable if they're outside that 3-year window?

•For this situation, an Enrolled Agent (EA) or CPA with experience in tax resolution would likely be sufficient. Tax attorneys are generally necessary for more complex cases involving litigation or criminal issues, which doesn't seem to be the case here based on the information provided. Regarding the stimulus payments, it depends on when they were issued. The Recovery Rebate Credit for the first and second stimulus payments had to be claimed on your 2020 return (due in 2021), while the third payment would be claimed on your 2021 return. If you haven't filed those tax years yet, you can still claim them when you file those specific returns, even if it's late. However, if you're beyond three years from the original due date for those returns, you unfortunately may have lost the ability to claim refunds.

I used taxr.ai to help sort out a similar mess with years of unfiled returns. I was super overwhelmed trying to gather all my old documents and figure out what I owed. Their document analyzer at https://taxr.ai was a lifesaver - I just uploaded what paperwork I did have (old W-2s, 1099s, etc.) and it organized everything by tax year and showed me what was missing. The best part was that it gave me a pretty accurate estimate of what I'd owe before I paid anyone a dime. Saved me from paying thousands to a resolution service when I really just needed help organizing my records and filing the back returns.

•How exactly does the document part work? Do you have to scan everything in or can you take pictures? I have a pile of tax documents from the last several years but it's all mixed up and I don't even know where to start.

•Sounds too good to be true honestly. Did you still need a tax professional after using it or were you able to file everything yourself? I'm skeptical that any tool can really handle complex situations.

•The document part is super flexible - you can scan documents if you have a scanner, but I just took pictures with my phone which worked perfectly fine. The system recognized different tax forms automatically (W-2s, 1099s, etc.) even from photos and sorted them by year. I ended up filing myself after using the tool. It organized everything so clearly that I could see exactly what I had for each year. I was surprised too - I thought my situation was too complex to handle myself, but having everything properly organized made it manageable. The tool helped identify some deductions I qualified for that I didn't know about, which reduced what I owed by almost $2,300. But everyone's situation is different - some people might still want professional help after organizing everything.

Just wanted to update - I decided to try taxr.ai after my skeptical comment and I'm genuinely shocked at how helpful it was. I spent days trying to sort through 5 years of tax documents and getting nowhere, but the tool organized everything within minutes. The tax transcript analysis feature was what really saved me - it showed exactly what the IRS had on file for me versus what documents I had, so I could see exactly what was missing. Ended up discovering some 1099s I'd completely forgotten about. Instead of paying $2700 to a resolution service, I was able to file the returns myself with TurboTax after getting everything organized. Still had to pay some back taxes but saved thousands in professional fees. Definitely worth checking out if you're in a similar situation.

If you're struggling to get through to the IRS about your identity verification issues, try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation where I couldn't get past their verification system, and I spent WEEKS trying to get through on the phone. Claimyr got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting on hold for 3+ hours. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c Once I got through to a real person, they were able to help me with the identity verification so I could start filing again. Made a huge difference in resolving my back tax issues.

•Wait, how does this actually work? I've been trying to call the IRS for weeks and either get disconnected or told the wait time is too long.

•This sounds like a scam. Why would you pay some random service to call the IRS for you? They probably just automate calls and then sell your spot in line. I highly doubt this works as advertised.

•It basically puts your call in a queue with their automated system that keeps dialing the IRS until it gets through. Once it does, it calls your phone and connects you directly to the IRS agent. No more endless redials or hours of hold music. I was skeptical too at first. I'm not saying it's magic - they're basically just handling the frustrating wait time part for you. But when you've been trying to reach the IRS for weeks with no success, having someone else handle the waiting game is worth it. They don't access any of your personal tax info - they just connect the call and then you talk directly to the IRS agent yourself. I was able to get my identity verification issues resolved in one call after spending weeks trying on my own.

I'll admit I was completely wrong about Claimyr. After posting that skeptical comment, I was still desperate to reach the IRS about a similar identity verification problem that was preventing me from accessing my tax records. Tried it the next day and got connected to an IRS representative in about 35 minutes. The rep was able to verify my identity over the phone and reset my online access. I had spent literally MONTHS trying to get through on my own with no success. For anyone dealing with IRS access issues while trying to resolve back taxes, being able to actually speak to someone makes all the difference. I was able to set up a payment plan for my back taxes on the same call. Completely worth it after all the frustration I'd been through.

Be VERY careful with tax resolution companies. I used a similar national company (not StopIRSDebt specifically) and ended up paying $3200 for them to basically fill out an installment agreement form that I could have done myself. They made big promises about reducing what I owed but in the end couldn't deliver. If you go with either option, get EVERYTHING in writing - exactly what services they're providing, what forms they'll file, and what results they're promising. Ask what happens if they can't deliver the results they promise.

•This is so important! My brother got scammed by one of these companies that promised to settle his $40k tax debt for pennies on the dollar. Paid $4k upfront, they filed an offer in compromise that got rejected, and then they basically disappeared.

•Exactly! These companies often advertise based on best-case scenarios that apply to very few people. The "pennies on the dollar" settlements (Offers in Compromise) have specific qualifying criteria - you have to prove you have no ability to pay the full amount now or in the foreseeable future. Most people don't qualify. The most frustrating part is that many of these companies know you won't qualify before they take your money. They collect their fee, file paperwork they know will be rejected, then tell you "well, we tried!" while keeping your money. Always ask for their success rate with cases similar to yours, and get clear details about what specific actions they'll take for the fee they're charging.

Has anyone looked into the IRS Fresh Start program? I had 4 years of unfiled returns and was able to get caught up through that. You might not need to pay someone so much money.

•The Fresh Start program definitely helped me too. It's not actually a specific program you apply for - it's a set of policies that make it easier to settle tax debts. Made my payment plan much more manageable.
