After 31 days waiting, IRS says 'error status' on my return - Do I need to amend?
Good morning y'all. So after being on hold for almost an hour & being on my 31st day of waiting I FINALLY got through to someone at the IRS & they just simply told me that my return has an "error status" on it and that if I don't receive a letter in the mail or my return by April 23rd for me to give them a call again 🙄 I'm really annoyed at this point and upset that this is happening. I never had this issue filing before & now I do... Does this mean I have to amend my Taxes Now!!! Anyone else dealing with this??

An "error status" doesn't necessarily mean you need to amend. It could be anything from a simple math error they're correcting internally to a mismatch between what you reported and what the IRS has on file. The fact they gave you a specific date (April 23rd) suggests they're processing it and expect resolution by then. I'd wait for the letter before doing anything - they'll tell you exactly what the issue is and whether you need to take action.

What credits did you claim this year? Child Tax Credit? Earned Income? Sometimes those trigger additional verification processes.

I claimed EIC and the child tax credit for my 2 kids. Nothing different from previous years though, that's why I'm so confused!

I had the EXACT same situation last month - "error status" with no details. I was going crazy waiting for the letter! I used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript and it showed me exactly where the error was (I had accidentally entered a 1099 amount wrong). The tool explained all the codes on my transcript and showed me it was a simple correction the IRS was making. Saved me from filing an amendment I didn't need to file!

How does that work? Can it actually see what the error is before you get the letter?

It analyzes all the codes and numbers on your transcript. Mine showed a 570 code (refund hold) and a 971 code (notice issued) with specific amounts that didn't match what I filed. The tool explained what each code meant for my specific situation and predicted exactly when my corrected refund would arrive - was spot on!

DO NOT AMEND YET! Wait for the letter. If you amend before seeing what they think is wrong, you could create a bigger mess. The IRS fixes many small errors automatically.

This happened to me in February. Got the "error status" message, then waited 3 weeks for a letter that never came. I tried calling back but couldn't get through for days. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get past the hold times and spoke to an agent who explained exactly what was wrong - turned out to be a simple verification issue with my W-2. Got my refund a week later after they fixed it. Definitely worth the call if you don't want to wait until April 23rd.

Omg thank you! I might try this because waiting another 2+ weeks is killing me. Did they charge you for the service?

There is a fee, but it was worth every penny to me since I was able to get through in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. The agent I reached was super helpful and actually fixed my issue while I was on the phone.

"Error status" usually means one of these things: 1. Math error they're fixing 2. Missing information 3. Income verification issue 4. Identity verification needed 5. Credit eligibility check In most cases they fix it themselves. The April 23 date is likely when their system is scheduled to complete the review. If they need anything from you, the letter will say so.
