846 Code on Transcript - Will Capital One Deposit Early?

Hey tax pros! Got my transcript updated w/ 846 code showing refund date of 02/25. I bank w/ Capital One and heard they sometimes drop $ early? Anyone know if that's legit or nah? Tryna plan my budget for next week and could rly use the cash for textbooks ASAP. Thx!

This depends on how Capital One processes direct deposits. Here's what you need to know: 1. The 846 code means your refund has been approved and scheduled 2. The date (02/25) is when the Treasury releases the funds 3. Some banks do release funds early when they receive the pending deposit notification 4. Capital One specifically has been known to release 1-2 days early in some cases 5. Not guaranteed though - it depends on when they receive the ACH notification I'd recommend planning for the official date, but there's a chance you might see it earlier.

Wow, I'm impressed with how clearly you explained that! I've always wondered about the exact process between the IRS releasing funds and them showing up in my account.

So if it's scheduled for a Friday (which I think 2/25 is?), would that mean it might show up on Wednesday or Thursday? šŸ˜… Just trying to manage my expectations here!

Have you checked your Capital One account settings to see if you have early direct deposit enabled? Unlike some other banks like Chime that advertise 2-day early deposits as a standard feature, Capital One's approach is a bit different and sometimes depends on account type.

I've been tracking my refunds carefully for the past three years. My February 18th, 2023 scheduled deposit from the IRS hit my Capital One account on February 16th last year. Then my January 29th, 2024 deposit came through on January 27th. So in my experience, they're typically releasing funds about 2 days early, but I'd still prepare for February 25th just to be safe.

This tracks with IRS Procedure 2020-28, which allows financial institutions to release funds upon receipt of the payment information rather than waiting for the official settlement date.

Did you have the 360 Checking account? I've noticed with my Capital One 360 account that I consistently get my payroll DD about 1 day early, but my tax refund was right on the 846 date last year.

There are several factors that affect early deposits: ā€¢ What time of day the IRS initiates the transfer ā€¢ Weekend/holiday processing schedules ā€¢ Capital One's internal processing schedule ā€¢ Account type and status

Called IRS about this last year. Got nowhere. Spent hours on hold. Then tried Claimyr. Got through in 15 minutes. Agent confirmed bank timing varies. Nothing IRS can do once 846 is issued. It's in bank's hands. Worth knowing for future reference. https://www.claimyr.com

Did you really need to call the IRS just to ask about bank deposit timing? That seems like something the bank would know better than the IRS.

I remember calling about this same issue in 2022 when my refund was delayed. The IRS agent actually told me that once the 846 code appears, they've done their part and it's entirely up to the banking system. Some banks hold funds even after receiving them.

Did Claimyr actually connect you to an agent who could give you specific information about your refund? Or was it just general information that you could have found online?

I'm somewhat skeptical about the reliability of early deposits. While Capital One might sometimes release funds early, it's probably not something you should count on, especially for important expenses like textbooks. In my experience, banking systems occasionally have processing delays that can offset any potential early release.

The ACH transfer protocol actually allows recipient banks to credit accounts as soon as they receive the payment notification from the Federal Reserve's processing system. Capital One utilizes this pre-funding capability on their 360 Performance Savings and Checking accounts, which is why many users report receiving deposits 1-2 days before the official posting date.

OMG I've been tracking this EXACT situation for years! The IRS sends ACH files in batches throughout the day, and Capital One processes incoming ACH transfers overnight! So if your 846 date is on a Monday, there's a really good chance you'll see it Saturday morning because Capital One processes weekend batches! It's so frustrating that banks aren't more transparent about this!!!

Last year I was in the same boat waiting for my refund to buy a new laptop for classes. I ended up just calling Capital One directly and asking about their policy. The rep told me they typically release government deposits when received, which was 1 day early for me. Maybe try that? I literally called while staring at my empty account balance and the rep could see the pending deposit that I couldn't see yet!
