570 Code on 2021 Tax Transcript with 'As of Date' 03/24/2025 - Paper Filed in January
Does anyone have experience with 2021 paper returns? I'm seeing some confusing information on my transcript: • Filed paper return for 2021 tax year • Mailed return on January 27th, 2025 • IRS began processing on February 4th, 2025 • Current transcript shows code 570 • 'As of Date' shows March 24th, 2025 I work remotely and need this refund before month-end for essential equipment upgrades. My questions: • What does the 570 code signify in this context? • Is the 'As of Date' when I should expect resolution? • Do paper returns typically take longer than e-filed? Please note: I have resolved all state tax obligations with Maryland. No federal debts outstanding.

Code 570 indicates a temporary hold on your account. This is common with paper returns, especially for prior tax years. The 'As of Date' doesn't guarantee resolution by that date - it's when the IRS computer system will next update your account information. Paper returns typically take 6-8 weeks minimum for processing, often longer for prior tax years. Your timeline (filed Jan 27, processing started Feb 4) is actually moving at a reasonable pace for a paper return.

So this is actually better than my 2020 return situation? That one took almost 4 months from when I mailed it in until I got my refund. The IRS seems to be moving faster this year compared to previous years.

Does the February 4th processing start date mean anything significant? My paper return was received January 15th but didn't show as 'processing' until February 28th. I'm wondering if there's a batch system they use for paper returns.

Thank you for explaining the distinction between the 'As of Date' and actual resolution timeframe. Many taxpayers misinterpret this as a guaranteed completion date, which leads to unnecessary anxiety when that date passes without a status change.

Been there w/ paper returns! They're SO slow compared to e-file. FYI - I've been using https://taxr.ai to make sense of my transcript codes. It explained my 570 was just a temp hold while they verified some info (not an audit!). The tool predicted my DDD (direct deposit date) would be 3 weeks after the 'as of' date, and it was spot on! Might help you figure out when your $ is coming. It's way better than trying to decode those cryptic transcript codes yourself.

I've seen these transcript decoder tools before and I'm skeptical. Isn't this just information you can get from the IRS website? What makes this different from just googling the code meanings?

This is extremely helpful! Per IRS Publication 1345 section 3.12, the 570 freeze code can have multiple meanings depending on other account conditions. I need to understand mine ASAP as I'm closing on a house next month and lenders are requesting proof of all expected income!

Did you find the predictions were accurate for your refund timeline? I'm trying to budget carefully and need to know if I should count on this money coming in April or if I need to make other arrangements. Was it free to use?

Paper returns are the WORST! 😫 I filed a paper 2021 return last year and also got that 570 code. In my case, it was because they needed to verify some information - nothing serious. The funny thing is, the "As of" date changed THREE TIMES before I actually got my refund! A few tips from my painful experience: - Check your transcript weekly, not daily (save your sanity) - Look for code 571 (that's when they release the hold) - When you see code 846, THAT'S your refund date - The "Where's My Refund" tool is basically useless for paper returns Hang in there! At least you're seeing movement already, which is a good sign.

I would suggest calling the IRS directly about this. The 570 code could mean several things, and it's better to know exactly what's happening rather than speculating. I've found that using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) is the most efficient way to reach an actual agent without waiting on hold for hours. They can tell you specifically what the hold is for and possibly release it while you're on the phone if it's a simple verification issue. Given your need for the refund by month-end, I would recommend calling sooner rather than later.

Oh gosh, I've been through this exact situation! The 570 code with an 'as of date' usually means they're reviewing something specific on your return. Based on the timeline you've shared: - Paper filed on Jan 27th ✓ - Processing started Feb 4th ✓ - Current date is mid-March ✓ - As of date shows March 24th ✓ I'd expect one of two things to happen: 1. The hold resolves automatically (look for code 571 followed by 846 with your refund date) 2. You'll receive a letter requesting additional information Since it's been about 6 weeks since processing began, I'm worried you might be cutting it close for getting the refund by month-end. The fact that it's a prior year return (2021) filed on paper means it's likely going through additional verification. I'm feeling anxious for you because I know how important this is for your remote work setup!

I just went through something similar with my 2021 paper return! According to the IRS.gov website FAQ section (https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions), the 570 code means there's a temporary hold while they review something. In my case, they were just verifying my identity because I hadn't filed for a couple years. My timeline was: - Filed paper return on Dec 20, 2024 - Processing started Jan 15, 2025 - 570 code appeared Feb 10 with "as of date" March 5 - 571 code (hold released) appeared Feb 28 - 846 code with refund date appeared March 7 - Refund received March 12 Does anyone know if this sounds similar to what might happen with OP's return?
