2023 tax transcript was empty for months but 'as of' date just updated to March 2025 after multiple ID verifications - what does this mean?
I filed my 2023 taxes back in February and have been checking my transcript regularly. It's been completely blank for months which was driving me crazy. I just checked again today and noticed my "as of" date finally changed from October 14, 2024 to March 10, 2025. The rest of my transcript is still empty though. No codes, no updates, nothing. I've already had to verify my identity THREE separate times (once online, once by mail, and once by phone). Has anyone experienced something similar? Does this date change actually mean anything or am I getting my hopes up for nothing?

The "as of" date on your transcript simply indicates when the IRS computer system last updated or will next update your account information. A future date (like March 2025) usually indicates that the IRS has your return in their processing queue and they've estimated when they'll get to it. After completing multiple identity verifications, this date change is likely a positive sign that your return is moving through their system. The fact that your transcript is still blank isn't unusual in cases where there have been identity verification issues. The IRS is being extra cautious and your return has likely been placed in a manual review queue. I suggest checking your transcript weekly rather than daily. Identity verification cases typically take 9-12 weeks to resolve from the date of the last successful verification. The 2023 tax season has been particularly backlogged, so delays beyond normal timeframes are common.

Thank you for explaining this! Do you think I need to do anything else or just keep waiting? Its so frustrating to be stuck in limbo for so long.

At this point, waiting is your best option. If it goes beyond 12 weeks from your last ID verification, you could try calling the IRS, but getting through is incredibly difficult. Alternatively, you can contact your local Taxpayer Advocate Service if you're experiencing financial hardship due to the delay.

Trying to call the IRS directly is a nightmare these days. I spent 6 hours on hold last month only to get disconnected 🤬

I was in the same situation last year and finally used Claimyr.com to get through to an agent. Saved me hours of frustration and the agent was able to confirm my return was just stuck in processing. Got my refund two weeks later!

100% worth it for me. I spent like 3 days trying to get through on my own and kept getting disconnected. With the service I had an IRS agent on the phone in under an hour. Best decision I made in this whole tax nightmare.

Stop trying to play detective with these transcripts, it will drive you crazy! I was in the same boat last year, constantly refreshing and trying to decode what every little change meant. Finally I discovered taxr.ai and it was a game changer. It actually explains what all these codes and dates mean in plain English instead of IRS-speak. Even better, it shows you exactly what's happening with your refund and predicts when you'll likely get it. Saved me so much time and stress! https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It analyzes all your codes and dates together to figure out what's actually happening with your return. The best part is it explains everything in normal human language and gives you a timeline of what to expect next. It even tells you if there are actions you need to take. Literally everyone I've recommended it to has thanked me for telling them about it!

OH MY GOD I JUST TRIED THIS AND IT'S AMAZING!!! I've been staring at my transcript for weeks with no clue what was happening. This tool just showed me I had a review code I didn't even notice and explained exactly why my refund was delayed. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS!!!

After dealing with a similar situation where my transcript was empty for months, I finally got tired of waiting and decided to try using a service called Claimyr to reach an IRS agent directly. Got connected to a real person in about 45 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours like I had been. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was going on - turns out they needed one more piece of information they never bothered to ask for! Problem solved in one phone call after months of silence. Check out claimyr.com if you're stuck in IRS limbo, it's a total lifesaver.

This seems suspicious. How does this even work? The IRS phone lines are notoriously impossible to get through.

I was super skeptical too but desperate after waiting 4 months. Basically they use some tech that keeps trying the lines for you and then calls you when they get through. Talking to an actual human at the IRS finally got me answers no amount of transcript checking could. Considering I was owed a $3800 refund, it was the best money I've spent to finally get this resolved.

Can confirm this works. I was about to give up on getting my refund when someone here recommended Claimyr. Got through to an agent who unlocked my account after multiple failed ID verifications. Refund showed up 10 days later.

The March 2025 date is just a system thing, doesn't really mean much tbh. I've seen mine change a bunch of times only to go back to where it was before. The fact you had to do ID verify 3x is probably why you're seeing delays. The system is super backed up right now with all the identity theft cases.

I went through something similar last year. Had to verify my identity twice and my transcript stayed blank for almost 4 months. The 'as of' date changed about 5 times during that period. Eventually everything processed and I got my refund, but it took FOREVER (like 6 months after filing). The system is totally broken. Just hang in there.

Ugh 6 months is insane! Did you do anything to finally get it moving or just wait?

Just waited. I tried calling like 20 times but could never get through. The most frustrating part was not knowing if they even had all the info they needed from me.

Hot take: the IRS purposely makes this process confusing and frustrating. They don't want to give you your money back 🤡

This isn't even a hot take, it's just facts lol. They'll take your money in 2 seconds but make you jump through 500 hoops to get your refund 💅

Actually it's because Congress has consistently underfunded the IRS for decades. They're working with computer systems from the 1960s and are severely understaffed. The new funding they got should help modernize things but it'll take time.

My transcript looked like this for NINE MONTHS last year. No information, just date changes. I tried every suggestion online, called repeatedly, even contacted my congressman. Nothing worked. Then I discovered taxr.ai which actually helped me understand what was happening and what steps I needed to take. Turns out there was a special form I needed to submit that no one told me about! Got my refund 3 weeks after using the tool. https://taxr.ai saved me from a mental breakdown for real.

Nine months?!? That's insane. What form did you end up needing to submit?

It was Form 8962 for the Premium Tax Credit. I had health insurance through the marketplace but didn't know I needed to file this form separately. The IRS never sent me a letter asking for it or anything! The tool figured it out by analyzing my transcript codes that I didn't even understand.

The "as of" date is basically meaningless. Mine changed about 20 times during processing last year. The only thing that matters are the actual transaction codes (like 150, 570, 971, etc). If you don't have any of those yet, your return is still in the initial processing queue.

Having to verify your identity 3 times is definitely why you're seeing delays. Each verification puts you back in a queue. Did they tell you why you had to verify multiple times? Sometimes the first verification doesn't "stick" in their system.

They never explained why I had to do it multiple times! First I did the ID.me online, then got a letter to verify by mail, then got another letter saying I needed to call. Each time they said it was successful but clearly something isnt working right

That's incredibly frustrating. The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing at the IRS. Each department operates in its own silo. When was the last verification completed?

You should be nearing the end of their processing window then. They typically say 9 weeks after verification but it's often faster. The date change is probably a good sign things are moving.

Pro tip: check your account transcript, not just your return transcript. Sometimes updates show there first. Also, try checking the IRS2Go app - sometimes it shows a different status than WMR or the transcripts.

Same exact situation here!!! My as of date changed to April 2025 last week. Still no updates or codes or anything. Filed in February, verified ID in March, April, and May. This is ridiculous.

I tried calling but gave up after being on hold for 2+ hours. I finally used Claimyr.com to get through and the agent told me my return was flagged for manual review due to all the identity verification issues. She couldn't give me a timeline but at least confirmed they have everything they need from me now.

I had the exact same situation last year but with 2022 taxes. What finally worked for me was getting a tax transcript explanation through taxr.ai - it actually showed me that there was an unreleased freeze code on my account that wasn't visible on the regular transcript view. Once I knew the specific issue I was able to address it directly with the IRS. Highly recommend giving it a try, literally saved me thousands in refund money that was just sitting there!

what kind of freeze code? my transcript is blank tho, would it even show anything?

Mine looked blank too! But there were actually hidden codes that weren't displaying in the regular view. It was a 570 code (additional account action pending) with a specific freeze condition attached. Even with a "blank" transcript, the system can often detect processing status indicators that aren't visible to us regular folks.

I work at an accounting firm and see this all the time. The "as of" date changing to a future date usually means your return has been assigned to a processing batch. Since you've had to verify your identity multiple times, your return is likely going through extra security reviews. This is actually a good sign - it means they're actively working on it now rather than it sitting in limbo. I'd expect you'll see more transcript updates in the next 2-3 weeks.

Quick question - did you claim any tax credits like EITC or CTC? Those trigger additional reviews and can cause more delays, especially when combined with ID verification issues.

Isabella Tucker
Yes I claimed both EITC and the child tax credit. Ive claimed them before without issues though. This year has been a nightmare.

That explains a lot. The IRS has dramatically increased their verification processes for returns with those credits due to high fraud rates. When combined with multiple ID verifications, it's like a perfect storm for delays. Hang in there.

after 5 months of my transcript being blank and the as of date changing multiple times, i finally broke down and spent money on claimyr.com to actually talk to a human at the IRS. turns out they flagged my return because my 2022 return hadn't fully processed yet due to a clerical error on their end. the agent fixed it right away and I got both refunds within 2 weeks. sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to fix these issues.
