Got DEO overpayment notice with $0.00 balance - what does this mean?

Completely confused about a DEO notice I got in yesterday's mail. It says I have an overpayment from a benefit period last year, explaining on page 2 that I need to repay a specific week. But here's the weird part - the overpayment balance is listed as $0.00! Does this mean I don't actually owe anything? Is this some kind of system error? Or am I missing something obvious? Of course when I tried calling the DEO help line, I got the usual runaround and couldn't reach an actual human. This system is beyond frustrating! Has anyone dealt with this kind of notice before? What am I supposed to do with a zero-dollar overpayment demand?

This actually happens more often than you'd think. A $0.00 balance typically means that while they determined there was an overpayment, it's been offset by something else or waived. The notice is basically informing you that there WAS an issue, but you don't currently have a balance to repay. It's essentially documentation for their records and yours. I wouldn't worry about it if the balance shows $0.00, but keep the notice for your records in case they try to claim differently later.

Thank you! That's a relief. Do you think I still need to respond to the notice in some way? I'm worried if I ignore it completely, they'll suddenly decide I owe money later.

I got something similar 3 months ago. Mine was from when they retroactively applied that earnings disregard rule to some old claims. They initially said I was overpaid $275 but then immediately offset it against some benefit I was apparently owed, resulting in $0 balance. The letter is basically their way of documenting what happened in their system. You don't need to do anything unless it specifically asks you to respond or appeal.

Same here!! They sent me one with $0 balance after they did some kind of "batch processing" of old claims. Nothing ever came of it.

DEO IS THE WORST AGENCY IN FLORIDA!!!! I've gotten SIX different overpayment notices in the last year - two of them with $0 balances, three with actual amounts, and one that contradicted itself on different pages!!! Their system is completely broken and they NEVER answer phones. I spent 4 MONTHS trying to resolve my issue and every time I called it was either busy signals or disconnections after waiting on hold FOR HOURS. They are DELIBERATELY making it hard to reach them!!!

omg yes. i think they do it on purpose so people give up. i still have an open issue from 8 months ago and gave up trying to call them.

If you absolutely need to speak with someone at DEO about this (though it sounds like you probably don't need to if the balance is $0), I'd recommend trying Claimyr. They helped me get through to a live agent after weeks of failed attempts. Their system basically holds your place in line and calls you when they've got an agent. I was skeptical but it worked - got through in about 30 minutes instead of endless busy signals. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj and their site is claimyr.com. Definitely worth it for peace of mind if you're still concerned about the notice.

Thanks for the suggestion. I might try that if I get another notice that actually shows a balance. For now I'll just keep the paperwork safe in case I need it later.

wait so did u have any other weeks they denied earlier? sometimes they do offsetting where they take $ from one week to cover another. my cousin had something like this where they sent a notice saying he owed $420 but then had credits from something else so final balance was $0. weird they dont explain it better tho

No denials that I'm aware of, but I did have a change in my benefit amount mid-claim last year when they recalculated something. Maybe that's related? Their explanations are so cryptic.

One more important thing - check your CONNECT account to see if there's any additional information or action items there. Sometimes the notices don't tell the full story, but your online account might have more details about the adjustment they made. Look under "Determinations and Pending Issues" or the "View and Maintain Account Information" sections. That might give you more clarity on why they sent this notice.

Good idea! I just checked and there's nothing showing under pending issues or determinations, but I did find a note under payment history for that week showing "adjustment applied" with today's date. So it looks like they did some kind of internal accounting thing but I don't actually owe anything. What a relief!

I remember when I was on unemployment during the pandemic they would send these kinds of letters all the time. One week they'd say I owed money, next week they'd say nevermind. The whole system is just outdated and confusing. Glad you don't actually owe anything!

Same thing happened to me last month! Got a scary looking overpayment notice that made me panic, but when I actually read through it the balance was $0.00. Turns out they had to send the notice because their system flagged something from when I was working part-time while collecting benefits, but then they automatically applied the partial earnings offset rules and it zeroed out. The notice is just their way of documenting that they reviewed it and made the adjustment. Keep the paperwork but you shouldn't need to do anything else if it clearly shows $0 balance.
