DEO unemployment confusion: How to properly report new employment and stop benefits?

So I finally got hired after 3 months of unemployment (retail management, thank goodness). Start date is next Monday, May 5th. I'm confused about how to properly end my DEO benefits. Do I just enter my employment information and start date in CONNECT and then stop claiming weeks? Or is there some official way to tell DEO I'm employed now? Don't want to accidentally commit fraud or have to deal with an overpayment notice later. Anyone been through this recently? Thanks in advance! Happy Friday to everyone still dealing with this system.

Congrats on the new job! There's actually no formal 'stop benefits' button in CONNECT. You just need to: 1) Report your employment when you claim your final week (the system will ask if you've returned to work), 2) Enter your employer info + start date, and 3) Stop claiming weeks after that. The system will automatically close your claim after you miss two biweekly claim periods. Just make sure to accurately report any earnings for your final week if you worked partial days while still eligible for some benefits.

Thank you! This makes sense. So when I claim my weeks ending 5/3 (since I start 5/5), I'll report the new job and then just stop claiming after that? No need to call them or anything?

Make SURE yuo report the job when u claim that last week!!!! DEO will come after you for overpayment if you dont. My roomate got hit with a $850 bill because she claimed one extra week after starting her job last year and didnt report it. They track this stuff with employer tax info.

Oh that's scary! I definitely don't want an overpayment situation. I'll make sure to report the job when I claim the weeks ending right before my start date. Thanks for the warning!

Hey there - just went through this in January. When you log in to claim your weeks, there's a specific question that asks if you've returned to work. Select 'Yes' and enter your employer info and start date. Then CONNECT will prompt you through the rest. Importantly, if you start mid-week, you'll need to report any earnings for that partial week. After that, you just stop claiming. Your claim stays technically open for a year from when you first filed, but it becomes inactive if you don't claim. DEO automatically checks with employer tax records, so they'll know you're working even if you don't formally close anything.

I think the original poster is confusing things... there's actually a separate section in CONNECT where you're supposed to report work when u first get it, not just when claiming weeks! It's under the 'Report Work' menu on the left sidebar. I had to do this separate from my weekly claims when I got hired back in March.

nope u just stop claiming. thats all. congrats on the job btw!!!

This is NOT correct and could cause serious problems. You MUST report your return to work when claiming your final week. If you just stop claiming without reporting the job, DEO may continue to consider you unemployed in their system, which could cause issues if you need to file again in the future. Always properly report!

@stressedclaimant is incorrect about needing to use a separate 'Report Work' section. The proper process is reporting your employment when claiming your final week(s). Just answer 'Yes' to the return to work question during your regular claiming process. There's no separate form you need to fill out beyond that.

Oh maybe they changed it then? When I got hired back in March I swear I had to do both - report it during weekly claims AND in a separate section. Sorry for the confusion!

I called DEO about this exact topic 2 months ago and was on hold FOREVER. My sister-in-law finally told me about Claimyr.com which got me through to an agent in under 20 minutes. Their video shows how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj. The agent told me you JUST have to report the return to work when claiming your final week and then stop claiming. She specifically said there is NO separate form or call needed to close your claim - it happens automatically. And yes definitely report that job or they will hit you with overpayment later!

Oh thank you! I was worried I'd need to call them to make it official. Good to know I can just report it during my final claim and be done with it. The system is so confusing sometimes.

As someone who processes DEO claims, let me clarify the correct procedure: 1. When you claim your final week(s), answer YES to the return to work question 2. Provide complete employer information including start date 3. Report ANY earnings for your final claim week if you worked even one day that week 4. Stop claiming after that Your benefit year technically remains open for 1 year from your initial application date, but payments stop once you report employment. The system will automatically mark your claim inactive after you miss two consecutive biweekly filing periods. If your new job doesn't work out within your benefit year, you can resume claiming without filing a new application (though you'd need to report the job separation).

Thank you for such a detailed explanation! This has been very helpful. I think I've got it now - report the job on my final claim, provide all the details, and then just stop claiming. I appreciate everyone's help!

Dont 4get to cansel ur direct deposit setup in the CONNECT system too. My friend kept gettin random deposits months after she stopd claiming and then DEO wanted all the $$ back!!

This isn't necessary - and actually isn't even an option in CONNECT. Once you properly report returning to work and stop claiming weeks, payments will stop automatically. If your friend received payments after stopping claims, there was likely a different issue or error involved. The system doesn't randomly send payments to people who've stopped claiming and reported employment.

Thanks everyone for the helpful info! Just to confirm what I'm understanding: I'll claim my final week (ending right before my start date), answer YES to the return to work question, provide all my new employer details and start date, and then just stop claiming after that. No need to call DEO or fill out any separate forms. My claim will automatically go inactive after I miss two claiming periods. This makes sense and sounds much simpler than I feared! Really appreciate all the guidance.

Congratulations on landing the retail management position! Just went through this exact process last month when I started my new job. The advice from @Giovanni Moretti is spot on - report your return to work during your final week claim, provide all employer details, and you're done. One small tip: screenshot or save confirmation of when you reported the job just in case you ever need proof later. DEO's system can be glitchy sometimes and it's good to have documentation. Best of luck with the new role!

That's a great tip about taking screenshots! I never would have thought of that but you're right - having documentation could save a lot of headaches if there are any system issues later. I'll definitely do that when I report my return to work. Thanks for the practical advice and the congratulations!

Congrats on the new job! I just went through this same process a few weeks ago. One thing I'll add to all the great advice here - make sure you're 100% clear on your actual start date vs. orientation/training days. I almost made a mistake because my "orientation" was on a Friday but my actual first paid work day wasn't until the following Monday. DEO cares about when you start getting paid, not when you show up for paperwork. Also, if your new job offers any kind of signing bonus or immediate payment, that counts as earnings for the week you receive it. Just wanted to mention these details since they can trip people up! Good luck with the retail management position - hope it goes great!

That's such an important distinction about start date vs orientation! I hadn't even thought about that - my new job does have orientation on Thursday before my official Monday start date. So I should report Monday as my actual start date since that's when I'll start getting paid, right? Thanks for bringing this up, it could have caused confusion when I report everything to DEO!
