DEO CONNECT showing wrong claim weeks date range - should backdate to October 2024?

I'm completely lost with this CONNECT system! Got laid off from my restaurant job on October 1, 2024, but couldn't get the application completed until February due to website glitches and password reset issues. Finally got everything verified through ID.me last week. When I logged in today, CONNECT is telling me to claim weeks starting from 2/9/24 to current date - but I've been unemployed since OCTOBER! Shouldn't my claim weeks go back to 10/17 when I actually lost my job? Am I going to lose 4 months of benefits? The difference would be huge for me financially. Has anyone dealt with backdating a claim? The DEO website is so confusing and the FAQ doesn't address this.

Yes, you should be able to request backdating for your claim. Florida DEO allows backdating if you had a good reason for not filing earlier (like technical issues, which you mentioned). You need to call them ASAP though - they have time limits on backdate requests. When you speak with an agent, specifically ask for a 'Request to Backdate' for your claim to your actual job loss date. Be prepared to explain why you couldn't file earlier. Make sure to document the call details (agent name, date/time).

Thanks for the quick response! So I definitely need to call them? There's no way to request backdating online through CONNECT? I've tried calling the 1-800 number like 20 times already but it just disconnects me or says all agents are busy. Is there a specific time I should call to get through?

I had the EXACT same issue last year! The system only lets you claim from the date your application was PROCESSED, not when you actually became unemployed. Call and specifically request a backdate form. They'll ask about your reason for delay - technical issues with CONNECT is a valid reason they accept. You'll need to be persistent though - took me 3 weeks of calling to get someone who could actually help.

Ugh, 3 weeks?! I can't wait that long - I'm already behind on rent. Did you have to provide any proof of the technical issues? I have screenshots of some error messages but not all of them.

CONNECT IS TRASH!! They do this ON PURPOSE to save money by not paying people for all the weeks they're entitled to!!! I had to file an appeal AND contact my state representative before they would backdate my claim. The system is DESIGNED to be difficult and the phone lines are DELIBERATELY understaffed. They count on people giving up!

I agree its frustrating but my brother works at DEO and says they're just super understaffed not trying to cheat ppl. But yea the systems old and breaks alot.

I had luck using Claimyr to get through to a DEO agent about backdating. Regular phone line kept disconnecting me but Claimyr got me connected to an agent in about 25 minutes. Cost a fee but worth it to get my claim backdated 3 months. They have a video explaining how it works at https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj and their website is claimyr.com. The agent I spoke with was able to submit the backdate request while I was on the phone.

Is that service legit? Seems sketchy to pay just to talk to unemployment. What did they charge?

It's legitimate - they basically call DEO for you and then connect you when they get an agent. I was skeptical too but it worked. I don't remember exactly what I paid but it was worth it after spending days trying to get through myself. My time is worth something too.

Important detail: There's a specific form for backdating called the "Request to Modify Claim Filing Date" (sometimes called Form BDR). When you speak with a DEO agent, specifically ask for this form. Florida allows backdating for technical issues, but you need to be very clear that CONNECT errors prevented you from completing your application earlier. Also, make sure you're claiming your weeks on time going forward, even while waiting for the backdate decision, or you could lose more benefits.

Thank you for the specific form name! I'll definitely ask for that. And good point about claiming current weeks - I'll make sure to do that while I wait. Really appreciate the help!

my cousin works at deo and says u need to file the backdate within 90 days of ur original claim or they won't approve it. also u should apply for food stamps while u wait cuz the backdate can take like 4-6 weeks to process even if they approve it

Thanks for the tip about food stamps - I hadn't even thought about that. And good to know about the 90-day limit. Hopefully I'm still within that window since I just filed in February.

Quick update on what you should expect: If they approve your backdate request, you'll suddenly see all those past weeks available to claim in CONNECT. You'll need to claim each week individually (answering the work search questions for each). It's tedious but worth it. Make sure you have your work search records for those back weeks ready - they might audit you. For October-December weeks, you'll need 5 work searches per week unless you had a work search exemption.

Oh wow, I didn't realize I'd need work search records for all those past weeks! I wasn't keeping detailed records since I didn't know I needed to. Will they deny my backpay if I can't document all 5 work searches for every single week?

You can reconstruct your work search activities now if needed. Include any job applications, resume submissions, networking events, or even informational interviews. Document company names, dates, contact methods, and position details. If you truly can't remember enough activities, be honest but explain you were unaware of requirements due to filing delay. Some agents are understanding about this situation.

Update us on what happens! I'm still fighting with them over my claim from DECEMBER and their "customer service" is a joke. The right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. One rep tells you one thing and another tells you something completely different! DOCUMENT EVERYTHING.

I definitely will update! And thanks for the reminder to document everything. I've started taking screenshots of everything in CONNECT and writing down names and times whenever I talk to someone.

One last tip: If you get denied for backdating or can't get through on the phone after multiple attempts, consider reaching out to your state representative. Many of them have staff dedicated to helping constituents with DEO issues. Google "[your county] state representative" and look for their constituent services contact info. Their offices can often cut through bureaucracy faster than we can as individuals.
