DEO scheduled a hearing but didn't send me any notice - what should I do?
I just logged into my CONNECT account and saw that I apparently have an appeals hearing scheduled for next week?? But I never received ANY notice about it in my inbox or by mail. How am I supposed to prepare for something I didn't even know was happening?? I had filed an appeal after they denied my claim saying I didn't meet the monetary requirements, but that was like 6 weeks ago. Now suddenly there's a hearing date but zero details about what documents I need or how to join. The status just says "Hearing Scheduled" with a date and time. Has anyone else had this happen? What should I do? Should I call DEO to get the hearing notice or will they just never answer like usual? I'm freaking out that I'll miss this hearing and lose my appeal because they didn't properly notify me!

This happened to me in March. The hearing notices are supposed to be sent both in your CONNECT inbox AND by mail at least 10 days before the hearing date. You need to call DEO immediately and ask them to resend your hearing notice with all the instructions. It should include the phone number to call, your PIN code for the hearing, and what evidence you need to submit beforehand. Don't wait until the last minute or you might miss it completely.

•Thanks for responding! Did you actually reach someone when you called? I've been trying the 1-800 number for days and either get disconnected or end up on hold for hours before giving up.

This is unfortunately common with DEO. Check your spam folder first to make sure it didn't go there. The hearing notice contains crucial information including: 1. The specific issue(s) being addressed in the hearing 2. How to access the telephone hearing (usually with a PIN) 3. How to submit evidence before the hearing (must be done 24 hours in advance) 4. Contact information for the appeals department If you can't find the notice, you need to contact the Appeals Office directly at 1-800-749-2958. Regular DEO representatives often can't help with appeals issues. Make sure to have your claimant ID and the appeal docket number ready when you call.

•DEO is SUCH A JOKE!!!! I was in the same situation last year and MISSED my hearing because they never sent the notice. Then they denied my appeal for "failure to appear" even though it was THEIR FAULT!!! Had to file ANOTHER appeal just to get a new hearing date. The whole system is designed to make people give up!!!!

•Just double-checked and my address is correct. Nothing in the mailbox either and the hearing is supposedly next Wednesday. I'm starting to panic!

I had something similar happen and I used Claimyr to get through to a real person at DEO. It costs a little but was worth it since they got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days. The agent was able to email me the hearing notice right away. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj or just go to claimyr.com. Definitely worth it for something important like an appeal hearing.

•is this legit? seems sketchy to pay someone just to call unemployment for you

•It's completely legit. They don't call for you - they get you through to DEO by bypassing the hold system. You're the one who talks to DEO directly. I was skeptical too but was desperate after trying for a week to get through.

You absolutely NEED to get that hearing notice ASAP. Without it, you won't know: 1) What documents to prepare 2) What specific issue they're addressing (could be monetary eligibility, work search, availability, etc.) 3) How to dial in (they use a special conference line with a unique PIN) I recommend trying to contact the DEO Appeals office directly rather than the main unemployment line. Their number is 1-800-749-2958. Be prepared to wait, but they tend to be more helpful than regular DEO staff. Also, while waiting to get the official notice, start gathering ALL documentation related to your claim - employment records, income verification, any communications from DEO, etc. The more prepared you are, the better.

•Thank you!! I didn't know there was a separate appeals office number. I'll try calling them first thing tomorrow morning.

Also important: If you can't get the hearing notice before the scheduled date, make sure you call in to the hearing anyway. Just call the appeals office number at the time of your hearing and explain that you never received instructions but see the hearing on your calendar. They can usually connect you to the right hearing. If you miss the hearing entirely, they'll likely rule against you for non-appearance and then you'll have to go through another appeal process just to explain why you missed it. That adds months to the process.

•That's a great tip - I'll make sure to call in even if I can't get the notice. My hearing says it's at 1:30pm next Wednesday, so I'll call the appeals office if I don't have the proper instructions by then.

Update us on what happens! Many people have been in this situation, and it usually works out if you're proactive about contacting them before the hearing date.

•I finally got through to someone! I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and got connected to a DEO agent in about 15 minutes. They confirmed there was a glitch in their system and the notice never went out. They emailed me all the hearing info right away, and I now have the call-in number, PIN, and list of issues being discussed. The hearing is about my monetary eligibility and I need to submit my 2023 tax forms and last 4 pay stubs as evidence. So relieved I didn't miss this! Thanks everyone for your help!
