Need to create new EDD account? Can't reset password - don't remember last payment amount from 2020

I'm trying to file for unemployment again and I'm completely stuck with my EDD login. I originally filed back in 2020 during the pandemic, but I haven't touched my account since then. Now I can't remember my password (of course), and when I try to reset it, the system asks me how much my last payment was. Seriously?? That was like 3 years ago! How am I supposed to remember the exact dollar amount? Do I need to create a brand new account to apply again? Or is there another way to recover my old account without knowing that payment amount? I've tried guessing a few times but got locked out. The whole system seems designed to keep people from actually getting help. Anyone dealt with this recently?

I switched banks since then... ugh. I hate that they make this so difficult!

This happened to me last month! The EDD system is HORRIBLE for returning claimants. I was locked out for almost 2 weeks trying to figure this out. Did you check your email for old EDD payment confirmations? Sometimes they send those and you might still have them. Or tax records from 2020/2021 might show the exact payment amounts.

I just searched my email and found nothing from EDD except the original account creation confirmation. I'll check my tax records though - good idea!

You definitely should not create a new account. The EDD system will flag multiple accounts with the same SSN as potential fraud, which could delay your new claim for months while they investigate. For recovering your old account, you have several options: 1. Check your tax records - your 1099-G from 2020/2021 will show the total benefits received, which might help you calculate individual payments 2. If you filed by phone originally, call the EDD technical support line at 1-833-978-2511 (not the regular claims line). They can assist with account recovery issues specifically 3. If the online recovery isn't working, you can request account recovery by mail. This takes longer (about 10 days) but doesn't require remembering your payment amount Don't give up on recovering your original account - it's much faster than dealing with a potential fraud investigation from creating a new one.

Thank you so much for these detailed options! I'll try checking my tax records first, and if that doesn't work, I'll try the technical support line. I didn't even know there was a separate number for that.

GOOD LUCK getting through to anyone at EDD!!! I spent THREE DAYS trying to reach someone last week when my certification was stuck. Kept getting that stupid "we're experiencing higher than normal call volume" message and then it would hang up! So frustrating!!

That's unfortunately very common with the EDD phone system. If you need to speak with someone urgently, I recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that connects you with an EDD representative much faster than calling directly. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km I was skeptical at first, but it saved me hours of redial frustration when I needed to resolve an identity verification issue.

In addition to what others have suggested, I wanted to mention that your last payment amount might be different than you expect if you're trying to remember the gross amount. The system might be asking for the net amount after taxes were withheld (if you opted for tax withholding). That caught me off guard when I was trying to recover my account. Also, if you filed during the pandemic, remember that there were those extra federal supplements ($600 then $300) that were separate from your regular weekly benefit amount. The system is probably asking for your base state benefit amount without those extras. If all else fails, you can visit an EDD office in person with your ID to get account access restored. It's a hassle but sometimes faster than the phone options.

That's a really good point about the net vs. gross amount and the pandemic supplements! I was probably thinking of the total with the $600 added. I'll try some calculations with tax withholding in mind.

I just went through this exact situation in January. After lots of trial and error, I discovered that what worked for me was answering the security questions instead of the payment amount question. On the password reset screen, there should be a link that says something like "Answer security questions instead" or "Try another verification method." If you set up security questions when you first created your account, this might be easier than remembering exact payment amounts from years ago. Also, I found that calling right when they open at 8:00 AM gives you the best chance of getting through to someone who can manually reset your account access. Be prepared with your ID and personal information when you call.

I don't remember setting up security questions, but I'll definitely look for that option! And good tip about calling right at 8 AM - I'll try that tomorrow if I still can't get in. Thanks!

EVERY SINGLE TIME! And always on weekends when you can't reach anyone by phone! The whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to recover your account using any of the methods suggested? If you're still having trouble, I recommend trying the EDD online assistance form at https://askedd.edd.ca.gov/ and selecting the option for account technical issues. Sometimes they respond faster to written requests than phone calls. Also, be aware that if you're reapplying after a long break, you'll need to go through ID verification again with ID.me even after you recover your account access.

Update: I finally got in! I found my 2020 tax records and figured out what my weekly payment was. Had to subtract the tax withholding like someone mentioned. Now working on the ID.me verification which is a whole other headache... but at least I'm making progress. Thanks everyone for the help!
