Need to cancel EDD claim filed yesterday - urgent help needed!
I think I made a big mistake and filed for unemployment yesterday when I shouldn't have. My employer just offered me reduced hours instead of laying me off, so I don't actually need to file for unemployment right now. Is there any way to cancel my claim entirely? Can I message EDD directly to stop the claim from being processed? I don't want to commit fraud or cause problems with my employer. I tried looking through the UI Online portal but can't find any option to withdraw my application. Please help!!

U cant actually cancel a claim once its submitted but u dont have 2 certify for benefits. just dont fill out the bi-weekly certification forms when they come & ur claim will stay inactive. no money = no problem

•Are you sure? Won't my employer still get notified that I filed even if I don't certify? That's what I'm worried about.

The previous commenter is partially correct. While you cannot completely delete a claim from the EDD system, you do have options: 1. Don't certify for benefits as mentioned above 2. Contact EDD to explain the situation 3. If you do certify later, report ALL earnings accurately Your employer will receive notice about your claim filing. However, contacting EDD to explain the situation is important for your records. You can also explain the situation to your employer directly to avoid misunderstandings.

•Thank you! Do you know the best way to contact EDD? The phone lines seem impossible to get through.

I had almost the exact same situation last month! I tried calling EDD for three days straight and kept getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message. Super frustrating. I finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they have this system that basically calls for you and gets you in the queue. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km When I finally spoke to a rep, they noted in my file that I didn't intend to proceed with the claim. They told me exactly what the first person here said - just don't certify and the claim stays inactive.

•Does that service actually work? I'm skeptical of anything that claims to get through to EDD easily lol

@skeptical - Yes, it definitely worked for me! I was connected to an actual EDD rep in about 20 minutes after trying for days on my own. Worth it for the peace of mind alone.

LISTEN, YOUR EMPLOYER WILL ABSOLUTELY GET NOTIFIED AND YOUR TAX RATE COULD BE AFFECTED!!!! I run payroll for a small business and we get notices whenever an employee files. The EDD system is BROKEN and sometimes even if you don't certify the employer still gets charged!!!!! You MUST contact them directly and explain!!!!!

For accurate information: Your employer will be notified that you filed a claim, yes. However, if you don't certify and receive no benefits, there is no impact on your employer's unemployment insurance tax rate. The tax rate is only affected when benefits are actually paid out. That said, calling EDD to explain the situation is still good practice. You can also send a message through UI Online: 1. Log in to your UI Online account 2. Select "Contact Us" from the menu 3. Choose "Claim Questions" 4. Select "Made Mistake on Claim Filing" as the category 5. Explain your situation clearly But honestly, calling is more effective for urgent situations like this.

UPDATE: I was able to get through to EDD this morning! I used the Claimyr service someone recommended and got connected within 30 minutes. The representative was super helpful and made a note on my account that I didn't intend to proceed with the claim due to continued employment. She said my employer will still get the initial notice, but there won't be any impact on their rates since I won't be collecting benefits. She also suggested I let my HR department know what happened just as a courtesy. Such a relief to have this resolved!

•Excellent! Glad you got it sorted out quickly. This is definitely the best approach - getting official documentation of your intent not to proceed with the claim. Smart move to inform your HR department too.
