Is there a waiting period for California EDD unemployment benefits?
So I just filed my first unemployment claim with California EDD last week after getting laid off from my warehouse job of 4 years. I certify for my first week and the payment just shows as 'pending' with no dollar amount. My coworker told me I won't get paid for the first week because of some waiting period thing but I honestly have no idea if that's true or not. Is there actually a waiting period for California EDD unemployment? Like do they just not pay you for the first week you're out of work? I've never filed before and the EDD website isn't super clear about it. Already stressing about rent coming up next month so any info would help.

Yes, California EDD does have a waiting period - it's called the 'unpaid waiting week.' Basically the very first week you certify for benefits is considered your waiting week and you will NOT receive payment for it. This is a standard part of the UI process in California. You still need to certify for that first week as normal though, because it officially starts your benefit year. So your coworker was right. The good news is every week after that first unpaid one, you should receive your weekly benefit amount as long as you meet all the eligibility requirements - staying able and available for work, actively searching for jobs, and reporting any earnings. Make sure you're keeping your job search log updated with at least one job contact per week.

AuthorOk that makes way more sense now. So I certify for week 1 and get nothing, then week 2 I should actually get paid? Is it usually pretty fast after that?

Michael Adams
Correct. Week 2 payment typically processes within a few business days after you certify, then gets deposited to your Bank of America EDD debit card or direct deposit account, whichever you set up. Most people see it within 2-3 business days after certification.

same thing confused me when i first filed lol i thought my claim was broken

Just to add some history here - California actually suspended the waiting week for a while during certain economic downturns, which is why some older posts online say there's no waiting period. But as of right now in 2025, the one-week unpaid waiting period IS back in effect for regular UI claims. Don't let outdated info throw you off.

AuthorUgh I definitely fell into that trap, I read something saying there was no waiting period and got confused. Thanks for clarifying.

THANK YOU for saying this. I wasted so much time thinking my payment was just delayed when it was actually just the waiting week. EDD really should make this clearer on their website honestly

Yeah the EDD website buries this info. It's mentioned in the UI Online portal somewhere but it's not exactly front and center when you're first filing.

When I went through this a few months ago I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why my first certification showed zero dollars. I called EDD probably 8 times and couldn't get through to anyone to even confirm it was normal. Finally someone in a Facebook group told me about Claimyr - it's a service that gets you connected to an actual EDD phone agent without sitting on hold forever. Went to claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. Got through to an EDD rep who confirmed it was just the standard waiting week. Saved me a ton of stress honestly.

AuthorI might need this actually. I've been trying to call EDD and keep getting the 'we cannot take your call' message and getting hung up on.

does that actually work?? I've been trying to reach EDD for two weeks about a different issue

It worked for me. The agent I reached was actually really helpful once I got through, explained the whole waiting week thing and also checked my claim status.

gonna check that out, calling EDD has been an absolute nightmare lately

wait so if the waiting week is unpaid does that mean my benefit year is shorter?? like do I get one less week of total benefits because of this??
0 coins
Michael Adams
No your maximum benefit weeks aren't reduced. The waiting week doesn't count against your total available weeks of benefits. You still get your full allotment - typically up to 26 weeks of regular UI benefits in California - it's just that the first week you certify has a $0 payment. Think of it as a delay rather than a deduction.

Joshua Wood
Oh ok phew. I was freaking out thinking I'd only get 25 weeks. That's a relief.

Good clarification. Lots of people think this and it's worth spelling out clearly.

Something else worth knowing - if your claim ends up in adjudication for any reason (like there's a question about why you separated from your employer), your payments get held up on top of the waiting week. So you might end up waiting longer than just that one unpaid week. Do you know if your employer contested the claim or if there's any issue with your separation?
0 coins
Chloe Mitchell
AuthorI don't think so? I was laid off, not fired. My employer said it was a reduction in force. Should I be worried about adjudication?
0 coins
Ryan Young
For a standard layoff you're usually fine. Adjudication typically gets triggered when there's a question about the reason you left - like if you quit or were fired for misconduct. A RIF layoff is the most clear-cut case for UI eligibility so you should be ok. Just watch your UI Online portal for any new notices.

yea i got laid off too and sailed right through with no adjudication. you should be good

THE WAITING WEEK IS SO FRUSTRATING. I lost my job and had zero income for literally 2 weeks because of it. Why do they make you wait AND not pay you for week 1?? Makes absolutely no sense to me. People need that money NOW not in two weeks.

It's an old policy that exists in many states' UI systems, originally designed as a cost-saving measure and to discourage short-term filing. Doesn't make it less frustrating though, especially for people in urgent financial situations.

Samantha Hall
Still a terrible policy imo. People filing UI are already in a tough spot.

fr, by the time the first real payment hits you've already missed a bill

So just to make sure I understand - you have to certify for the waiting week even though you won't get paid? Like what happens if someone accidentally skips certifying for week 1?
0 coins
Michael Adams
Yes, certifying for the waiting week is required. If you skip it, your benefit year may not start properly and it can create complications with your claim. If you already missed certifying for week 1, contact EDD as soon as possible to see if a late certification can be submitted. Don't let it go too long.

Ok good to know, I haven't missed it, just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing extra work for no reason. Makes sense that it's still required.

I tried calling EDD like 15 times over the course of a week when I had a question about my waiting week and could never get through. Somebody in another thread mentioned Claimyr and I finally tried it after exhausting every other option. You can find them at claimyr.com - also there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see what the process looks like before trying it. Got connected to an EDD agent in a reasonable amount of time and got my question answered. Honestly wish I'd tried it sooner.

ok this is the second time I've seen this mentioned in this thread, might actually be worth trying. EDD's phone system is genuinely impossible

I was skeptical too but yeah it works. The EDD agent I reached was able to pull up my claim and actually look at it, which is more than I can say for the automated system

I've been going back and forth about trying it. You don't have to give them a ton of personal info or anything do you?

Nothing beyond what you'd expect to set up any kind of callback-type service. Was pretty straightforward.

I'm in a similar situation right now but my portal is actually showing a hold on week 2 payment and I can't figure out why. Week 1 I understand is the waiting week. But week 2 is just sitting there pending for 6 days now. Is that normal or is something wrong?
0 coins
Ryan Young
6 days pending after certifying for week 2 is on the longer side but not necessarily alarming. First check your UI Online portal under 'Claim Summary' for any flags or notices. If there's nothing showing, it might just be processing delays. If it goes past 10 business days with no payment and no explanation, that's when I'd push harder to get answers.
0 coins
Ezra Collins
There's nothing showing in the notices section which is what's confusing me. No adjudication flag, no issues flagged. Just pending.
0 coins
Michael Adams
Sometimes the first real payment (week 2) takes a bit longer to process just because it's the first actual payment on a new claim. The system does some additional verification. Give it until business day 7 or 8 before getting too worried.

my cousin told me if you worked full time before getting laid off the waiting week gets waived automatically, is that true??
0 coins
Noah Torres
That's not accurate for current California UI rules in 2025. Full-time employment status doesn't automatically waive the waiting week. The waiting week applies to all regular UI claimants regardless of prior work schedule. Your cousin may be thinking of the pandemic era when California temporarily suspended the waiting week, or may just be mistaken.

oh ok thanks for clearing that up, I'll let her know

One thing that helped me when I was confused about the waiting week - if you log into UI Online and click on 'Payment Activity' you can actually see a breakdown that labels week 1 as the waiting period payment of $0. Seeing it spelled out there made me feel better because at least I knew the system was working as intended and not just broken.

AuthorJust logged in and found exactly what you described. It literally says 'waiting week - $0.00' so that confirms it. Thank you so much, that's really reassuring to see.

Real question - I've seen some posts saying you should call EDD to confirm your waiting week was properly designated before your second payment processes. Is that actually necessary or overkill?
0 coins
Ryan Young
For a straightforward layoff claim with no issues flagged, I'd say it's overkill. Your UI Online portal will show the waiting week in Payment Activity as mentioned above. Calling EDD for something the portal already confirms clearly is usually not worth the hold time. Save the phone calls for actual problems.

Victoria Scott
That makes sense. I'll check the portal first and only call if something looks off. Just anxiety making me want to triple-check everything I guess.

idk if anyone else did this but I submitted a message through Ask EDD asking about my waiting week status and never got a response for like 3 weeks lol. By that time I had already gotten my first real payment and figured it out. Ask EDD is basically useless for time sensitive stuff

Chloe Mitchell
AuthorI submitted an Ask EDD message too and yeah still waiting on a response. Not super helpful for urgent things.

Ask EDD is great for things where timing doesn't matter but for anything where you actually need a quick answer you really do need to reach a phone agent. That's half the reason services like Claimyr exist - getting through on the phone is just nearly impossible otherwise. claimyr.com if you haven't tried it.

yeah I'd rather wait the 3 weeks than deal with the phone system honestly, EDD calls are traumatic

for anyone reading this stressed about the waiting week - I know it feels like forever when you need the money but week 2 payment usually hits pretty quick once it processes. For me it was in my account by day 3 after I certified for week 2. Hang in there

Something I wish someone had told me when I first filed - the waiting week resets if you close your claim and open a new one. So if you ever go back to work temporarily and then get laid off again, you'll have another waiting week on the new claim. Just something to be aware of for the future.
0 coins
Noah Torres
Correct. Each new benefit year or new claim comes with its own waiting week. This is why it can be worth thinking carefully about whether to close an existing claim if you're only going back to work briefly - sometimes partial benefits while working are better than starting the whole process over.

Zara Perez
Exactly, I made that mistake once and really regretted it. Ended up waiting an extra 2 weeks before money came in again.

Great point to raise. The partial benefits option is underutilized by a lot of claimants who don't realize they can work part-time and still receive reduced UI payments.

I hate that this whole waiting week thing exists but at least this thread exists so people can find actual answers. EDD's own FAQ on the waiting week is like 2 sentences and doesn't explain anything about what to do or what to expect

seriously, half my EDD knowledge came from forums like this not from EDD directly. the official resources assume you already know what you're doing

It's a known issue with government benefit systems in general - the documentation is written by people who already understand it, for people who don't yet. Not a great combination.

Final update from me - my week 2 payment came through today, day 4 after certifying! So for anyone with a clean layoff claim and no adjudication flags, it does move pretty fast once you get past that first waiting week. Happy to hear it resolved quickly. Best of luck - and remember if you ever do run into an actual issue with your claim, getting through to an EDD phone agent (whether through the regular line or something like Claimyr at claimyr.com) is still the fastest way to get real answers on complicated issues.
