Back to California Unemployment

Lorenzo McCormick

When will I get my unemployment payment from California EDD?

Okay so I've been waiting on my first unemployment payment for almost two weeks now and I genuinely have no clue what's happening. I filed my initial claim about 12 days ago, completed my first weekly certification right away, and my UI Online dashboard just says 'payment processing' with absolutely zero other details. No letters in the mail, no emails explaining anything, nothing. My landlord already texted me about rent and I don't know what to tell him. I work in logistics and got laid off when my warehouse location downsized, so I don't think there's anything complicated about my claim. Does anyone know how long it actually takes for California EDD to release the first payment? Like is there a standard timeline I should know about? I feel like I'm just sitting here in the dark waiting and the bills aren't going to wait.

The first payment almost always takes longer than people expect. California EDD typically has a 3-week waiting period built into new claims - the first week is an unpaid 'waiting week' required by state law, and then your first actual payment covers the second week of your claim. So even if everything is perfectly clean on your claim, you're realistically looking at 2-3 weeks from your filing date before you see money. If you filed 12 days ago and already certified, you might actually be right on schedule. Check UI Online and see if your payment status says 'paid' with a date - sometimes the money hits your Bank of America EDD debit card before the portal even updates fully.

Oh wait I didn't know about the waiting week thing. So basically one week just disappears with no pay? That's brutal but at least it explains some of the delay. My portal still says processing though, not paid.

0 coins

yeah the waiting week is real and it catches everyone off guard. nobody tells you about it when you file lol

0 coins

Just to add some accuracy here - the waiting week requirement has been in place in California for a long time except during certain emergency periods. It's week one of your benefit year and you will NOT receive payment for it. Your first actual payment should cover week two of your claim period.

0 coins

same boat rn, filed 11 days ago and still nothing showing as paid. starting to freak out a little not gonna lie

0 coins

Ugh okay so I'm not alone at least. Did you get any mail from them or just silence?

0 coins

just silence. checked my myEDD inbox and nothing there either. my sister said hers took 18 days total for the first one so maybe thats normal??

0 coins

18 days is within the normal range for a first payment assuming no issues flagged on the claim. If it pushes past 21 days with no update, that's when you'd want to take action.

Okay genuine question for the thread - when my payment was stuck at 'processing' for over two weeks I couldn't get ANYONE on the phone at California EDD. Called like 8 times over 3 days and either got a busy signal, got disconnected, or got put on hold for an hour and then dropped. A coworker told me about a service called Claimyr that basically navigates the phone system for you and gets you connected to an actual live EDD agent. I was skeptical but I was desperate. Tried it at claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - ended up getting through to a rep who looked at my claim and told me exactly what was causing the delay. Turned out there was a small employer verification issue that would have just sat there forever if I hadn't called. Payment came through within 48 hours after that call.

0 coins

Wait so there was actually something wrong with your claim and it would have just... sat there? That's terrifying. Did the Claimyr thing take long to work?

0 coins

Honestly it was faster than I expected. Definitely faster than sitting on hold for hours or calling back repeatedly. The agent I got was actually helpful once I reached a real person - they can see notes and flags on your claim that you can't see from UI Online.

0 coins

I'm always skeptical of these third party things but if it actually gets you to a real person that's the hard part. Getting through to EDD is genuinely impossible sometimes

0 coins

claimyr seems to come up a lot in these threads. might actually try it if my payment doesn't show by end of this week

0 coins

Let me give you a realistic timeline breakdown since this confuses a lot of people. After you file your initial claim, California EDD processes your employer's wage data and verifies your separation reason - this alone can take 3-10 business days. Then your first weekly certification has to be submitted and processed. Then there's the waiting week. By the time all of this runs its course, 14-21 calendar days from filing to first payment is completely standard for an uncomplicated claim. Where it goes sideways is when adjudication gets triggered - that means EDD needs to investigate something before they'll release payment. Common triggers are: employer disputes your reason for separation, your wages don't match what EDD has on file, or you worked in an industry that has seasonal flags. If you're approaching 3 weeks and nothing has moved, something may be in adjudication and you won't know unless you call or get a notice in the mail.

0 coins

This is really helpful thank you. Is there any way to see on UI Online whether adjudication has been triggered? Or does it just keep saying processing?

0 coins

Unfortunately the portal is not great at showing adjudication status. Sometimes it shows 'pending' or 'hold' in the payment status column. Other times it literally just says processing with no indication. The most reliable way to know your actual claim status is to speak with an agent directly.

0 coins

This happened to me exactly. Processing for 3 weeks, no letters, thought everything was fine. Called and found out adjudication was triggered because my former employer told EDD I quit when I was actually laid off. Had to do a phone interview to resolve it. The system really should notify you when something like that happens.

0 coins

Does anyone know if there's a way to check payment status without logging into UI Online? The website keeps giving me errors and I can't even get in to check anything

0 coins

You can check your Bank of America EDD debit card balance by calling the number on the back of the card directly - that will tell you if funds have been loaded even if UI Online is being difficult. Also try using UI Online from a different browser or clear your cache, the site is notoriously finicky.

0 coins

Oh that's smart I'll call the card number. It's a different number than the main EDD line right?

0 coins

Yes completely different. It's the BofA prepaid card customer service line, just look at the back of your EDD debit card. If you haven't received the card yet it usually arrives 7-10 days after your first payment is issued.

0 coins

ngl the whole california edd system is designed to confuse people. you have to figure everything out yourself because they sure aren't gonna tell you anything. been through this twice now and each time its like starting from zero

0 coins

Yeah I feel that. Why isn't there just like a clear email that says 'here's where you are in the process' or something basic like that

0 coins

because that would make too much sense lol. you just have to keep checking UI Online and hope something changes

0 coins

To be fair they do send paper notices for most status changes but mail is slow and the UI Online notifications system is limited. I agree the transparency could be way better.

0 coins

I want to add something that burned me the first time - make sure you are certifying every single week even while you're waiting. Some people think they should wait until the first payment comes through before certifying again, but that's wrong. You need to keep submitting your weekly certifications on schedule or you'll create gaps in your claim that are a pain to fix later. Certify every week regardless of where your payment status is.

0 coins

Oh wow I was actually wondering about this. So I should just keep certifying every Sunday even though nothing has paid out yet?

0 coins

Yes, every week without fail. The certification window opens Sunday and closes Saturday midnight. Miss it and you have to request a late certification which slows everything down even more.

0 coins

this is such important advice i wish someone had told me this the first time i filed

0 coins

Same, I missed a certification week early on because I thought I had to wait and it created a whole mess with my claim. Keep certifying no matter what.

0 coins

My first EDD payment took exactly 19 days from filing date. Second claim I filed (got laid off again two years later) took 16 days. Both times no adjudication, just normal processing time. So the variation is real even when nothing is wrong with your claim.

0 coins

That's actually reassuring to hear that 19 days is within normal range. I'm at 12 days so maybe I still have some runway before I need to panic.

0 coins

Yeah 12 days is still early. I'd say if you hit 21 days and still nothing, that's when to start making calls.

0 coins

the phone thing is the hardest part. ive tried calling california edd probably 15 times across different days and different times of day and i have never once gotten through to a real person. its always busy, disconnected, or infinite hold. how are people actually reaching agents??

0 coins

Seriously try Claimyr - claimyr.com - it's specifically built for this problem. They handle the hold queue and the reconnects for you. I know it sounds weird to use a third party to call a government office but when you genuinely cannot get through any other way it becomes worth it. The video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 explains how it works pretty clearly.

0 coins

okay I've heard this mentioned a couple times now in this thread so I'll actually look into it. Do they just call for you or do you still have to talk to the agent yourself?

0 coins

You still talk to the agent yourself once you're connected - they just handle the terrible hold and call-back system so you actually get to that point without spending your whole day on the phone.

0 coins

One thing worth double-checking: log into UI Online and look under 'Claim Summary' to see if there's anything listed under 'Issues' or if your claim type shows correctly. Sometimes when there's a problem with the claim EDD will post a note there that doesn't trigger any email notification. Also check your myEDD inbox through the portal - any official correspondence from EDD will show up there even if they also mail a paper version.

0 coins

Just checked - Claim Summary shows my claim type as Regular UI and there's nothing under Issues that I can see. myEDD inbox has my initial confirmation letter and nothing else. So maybe I really am just in normal processing?

0 coins

Sounds like it honestly. Normal processing with no flags. You're probably fine and just anxious about the timeline which is completely understandable. Keep certifying, watch for the payment date to appear in UI Online, and if nothing moves by day 21 consider calling to verify.

0 coins

This is good advice. The absence of anything in the Issues section is actually a positive sign. It means EDD hasn't flagged anything for adjudication yet. Normal processing just takes time.

0 coins

wait do people actually get their payments on the EDD debit card or can you set up direct deposit? I've been waiting for a card that hasn't come and wondering if i missed a step

0 coins

You can do either - EDD debit card or direct deposit to your personal bank account. Direct deposit setup is done through UI Online under the Payment Preferences section. If you didn't set up direct deposit, EDD will automatically send a Bank of America debit card to your address on file. Card usually arrives within a week or two of your first payment being issued.

0 coins

oh okay so the card comes AFTER the first payment not before. that's what confused me. I was waiting for the card thinking I needed it to certify or something

0 coins

Yeah the card arrives after payment is processed, not before. You can also set up direct deposit even after you've already received the card - just go into UI Online settings and switch the payment method.

0 coins

Something nobody mentioned yet - if your employer is a reimbursable employer (like certain nonprofits, government agencies, schools) instead of a regular taxable employer, the processing time for verifying your wages can take longer because the process is different. Not saying this applies to you since you mentioned logistics/warehouse, but it's a factor that causes delays some people don't realize.

0 coins

Good point. Also federal employees have a separate claims process entirely that routes through a different system. Again probably not OP's situation but useful for others reading this.

0 coins

Yeah I worked for a private logistics company, nothing unusual there. But good to know for anyone else reading.

0 coins

Honestly the anxiety of waiting is almost worse than anything. Like the not knowing is brutal. I remember my first time filing I refreshed UI Online probably 20 times a day for two weeks. Eventually just had to force myself to check once a day and move on with job searching.

0 coins

I've absolutely been doing the refresh-every-hour thing. It's not healthy lol

0 coins

I know but it's so hard not to when you're stressed about money. Try to treat the job search requirement as something to focus your energy on instead - at least that's something you can actually control

0 coins

the job search requirement is real too don't forget - you need to be doing and documenting your three job search activities per week while you're waiting or your benefits can be affected

0 coins

UPDATE on my similar situation since I posted in another thread about the same thing - I finally got through to EDD after like a week of trying and it turned out my claim had a hold because my most recent employer hadn't responded to the verification request. The agent manually escalated it and released my payment within 24 hours. So sometimes there's genuinely something stuck that you can't see on UI Online and calling actually fixes it fast once you reach someone.

0 coins

This is both scary and helpful. So you can have a hold on your claim that UI Online just doesn't show you?

0 coins

Exactly. The portal shows 'processing' even when there's actually a hold. You have no idea unless you call. That's the most frustrating part.

0 coins

This is exactly why I finally tried Claimyr last week - same situation where the portal showed nothing wrong but I hadn't been paid in 18 days. Got through to an agent who found an employer response hold and it was resolved in a day. Wish I had done it sooner instead of stressing for two weeks.

0 coins

Okay you and a few others have convinced me. If I don't see a payment by this weekend I'm going to try Claimyr. I cannot keep doing the refresh-and-wait thing.

0 coins

how do you even do the job search requirement properly? I keep reading different things online. some say 3 activities per week some say its different. Also does applying on indeed count

0 coins

Current California EDD requirement is three job search activities per week. A job application does count as one activity, and yes Indeed applications are acceptable. You need to keep a job search log with the employer name, position, contact info, date, and method of contact for each activity. EDD can request this log at any time so keep it current.

0 coins

oh okay so I need to keep an actual log not just do the applications? Where do I store that, in UI Online or just my own records?

0 coins

Keep your own records - a spreadsheet or even a notebook works. EDD doesn't have a place for you to submit the log proactively, they just ask for it if you're audited or have a compliance issue. Some people use the CalJOBS website which can automatically log some job search activity.

0 coins

I went through almost this exact situation three months ago. Filed, certified, waited, saw nothing in UI Online that explained the delay. Hit day 20 with no payment. I was ready to lose my mind. Finally broke down and called - after getting through to an agent they told me my claim was in adjudication because my employer reported my separation differently than I did. I had to give a phone statement explaining my side, which they scheduled about a week out. After the interview my claim was approved and I got all my back payments including the weeks I'd been waiting. Total time from filing to first payment ended up being 36 days but I got everything I was owed. Just don't give up.

0 coins

36 days is a long time but knowing you got all the back pay is reassuring. Did they pay you for the weeks you were waiting during adjudication?

0 coins

Yes - once your claim is approved after adjudication they release all the certified weeks at once. So if you've been certifying every week during the wait you'll get a bigger lump sum payment covering everything. That's why certifying every single week is so critical even when nothing is paid yet.

0 coins

This is such an important point. The back payments come all at once when the hold resolves. Every week you certify is money waiting to be released the moment your claim clears.

0 coins

my coworker told me if you don't get paid within 2 weeks you should refile your claim. please do NOT do this. I almost did it and got told by an EDD agent that refiling creates a whole new claim, resets your benefit year, and can create a nightmare of duplicate claim issues that are very hard to untangle. Just wait and call if you're concerned but don't refile.

0 coins

This is correct and important. Do not refile unless specifically instructed to do so by an EDD agent. Refiling prematurely is one of the most common mistakes people make and it genuinely complicates things significantly.

0 coins

Oh wow I hadn't even thought about refiling but I'm glad I didn't. I'll just keep certifying and try to get through on the phone if things don't move soon.

0 coins

yeah EDD agents have told me the same thing. the only time to refile is if they specifically tell you your claim was denied and you're starting fresh. otherwise never refile mid-processing.

0 coins

UPDATE: Okay it's day 16 and I just checked UI Online and my payment status finally changed from 'processing' to 'paid' with a date of two days from now. I literally just stared at my screen for a minute. So relieved. For anyone reading this who's in the same situation - it really can just be normal processing time with no flags. The waiting is awful but sometimes the system is just slow. Still going to keep certifying every week obviously. Thank you everyone in this thread for actually explaining how this all works, I felt so much less panicked knowing what to expect.

0 coins

So happy for you! And yes keep certifying every single week going forward. Glad it worked out to be just normal processing time.

0 coins

congrats!! gives me hope that mine will update soon too

0 coins

This is the best kind of update. Glad you got it resolved and hope the money hits your card smoothly!

0 coins

Great news! And for anyone else still waiting and not seeing movement - seriously don't hesitate to use Claimyr at claimyr.com if you're hitting that 18-21 day mark with no update. Getting an actual agent to look at your specific claim is sometimes the only way to find out what's really happening and get things moving.
