How to file for unemployment in California EDD - complete step by step guide
Lost my job last Friday after 4 years at the same company and I have absolutely no idea how to file for unemployment. My manager handed me a termination letter citing 'restructuring' so I know I didn't do anything wrong, but I've never had to deal with California EDD before and the whole process feels completely overwhelming. I went to the EDD website and there are like 15 different links and I don't know which one to click first. Do I need to create an account somewhere? Is there paperwork I have to mail in or is everything online now? Someone told me I should file as soon as possible but I don't even know what filing means in this context. Any help would be massively appreciated, I'm a complete beginner here.

First off, don't panic - filing for unemployment with California EDD is actually more straightforward than it looks once you know where to start. Here's the basic roadmap: You'll need to go to edd.ca.gov and create an account on the myEDD portal. From there you select 'UI Online' to file your initial claim. Before you sit down to file, gather these things: your Social Security number, your last employer's name and address, your employment dates, your reason for separation, and your bank account info if you want direct deposit. The whole initial claim takes maybe 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready. One important thing - California EDD says you should file within the first week of becoming unemployed because your claim effective date is based on when you file, not when you were let go. Every week you delay is potentially a week of benefits you lose access to.

AuthorThank you so much. So I go to edd.ca.gov and look for myEDD? And the UI Online thing is where the actual filing happens? Just want to make sure I'm in the right place before I start entering my personal info everywhere.

yeah what they said. just make sure you have your last pay stub nearby too it helps with some of the wage questions

Also worth knowing - when EDD asks why you left your job, 'laid off due to restructuring' is one of the clearest paths to approval. Make sure you select 'lack of work' as your separation reason, not anything that sounds like you quit or were fired for cause. The terminology matters a lot on that form.

Filing the initial claim is step one but honestly people forget about the ONGOING requirements after that. Once your claim is filed you have to certify every two weeks through UI Online or by phone using EDD Tele-Cert. During certification you confirm you were able and available to work, that you actively looked for work each week, and report any earnings. If you skip a certification week you could lose those benefits entirely. California EDD isn't going to remind you - you have to set your own calendar reminders. A lot of first-timers get approved and then accidentally miss their first certification and wonder why their money never comes.

AuthorWait so I file once to open the claim and then have to do something every two weeks after that? I had no idea it was ongoing. What happens if I get a job interview and accept a position - do I stop certifying immediately?

Evelyn Kelly
You stop certifying once you return to full-time work. If you work part-time during your claim you still certify but report your earnings and EDD calculates a reduced benefit for that week. Don't just stop certifying without formally notifying them or your claim could get flagged.

When I was figuring out how to file for unemployment after getting laid off I honestly spent like two hours just going in circles on the EDD website before someone pointed me to UI Online directly. One thing that really helped me was watching some YouTube walkthroughs of the process. Also - and this is the part nobody tells you - after you submit your initial claim there's usually a waiting period while EDD reviews everything. Mine went into 'adjudication' for about 3 weeks because of something with my separation paperwork. During THAT time I could not get anyone at EDD on the phone no matter what I tried. A coworker told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) which basically gets you connected to an actual EDD phone agent without sitting on hold for 4+ hours. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. When my claim was stuck I used it and got through to someone who actually fixed my adjudication issue same day. Wish I'd known about it from the start.

Authoradjudication?? what does that mean exactly, is that bad? I haven't even filed yet and now I'm worried my claim will get stuck too

Evelyn Kelly
Adjudication just means EDD is reviewing your claim before approving it - it's not automatically a bad sign. For straightforward layoffs due to restructuring it often resolves on its own. It only becomes a bigger issue if there's conflicting information between what you and your employer reported.

I also used Claimyr when my claim was in adjudication for 5 weeks. Genuinely the only way I got through to EDD. Their normal phone lines are just impossible.

Few practical tips specifically about the myEDD account setup since that trips people up: Use a personal email address you check regularly, not a work email you're about to lose access to. When they ask for your ID verification through ID.me, have your driver's license and something else like a bank statement or utility bill ready. Some people get stuck at the ID.me step for days which delays the whole claim. Also use Chrome or Firefox - the EDD portal doesn't always cooperate with Safari.

Kiara Greene
AuthorOh wow I was going to use my work email. Glad I saw this before I started. Does the ID.me thing have to be done before I can submit my claim or can I do it after?
0 coins
Heather Tyson
ID.me verification is required to access UI Online fully. You can start the process but you'll hit a wall pretty quickly without completing it. Do it first, it usually only takes 15-20 minutes if your documents are clear.

the id.me thing stressed me out so much but it was actually fine once i just sat down and did it

I want to add something about the job search requirement because it catches SO many people off guard. Once your California EDD claim is approved you are required to make a minimum of 3 job search contacts per week. You need to keep a written log of these contacts - employer name, date, method of contact, position applied for. EDD can audit your job search activities and if you can't show documentation you risk losing benefits. There are some exceptions - if you're in a union that refers workers, or if EDD places you on standby status because your employer expects to rehire you within 8 weeks. But most regular claimants have to do the full job search.

AuthorDoes applying online count as a job search contact? Like if I apply through Indeed or LinkedIn does that satisfy one of the 3 required contacts?
0 coins
Sasha Reese
Yes, online applications absolutely count. Each separate application to a different employer is one contact. You can also count things like attending a job fair, reaching out to an employer directly by email, or registering with a staffing agency. Just log everything with dates.

Also register on CalJOBS (the state job search portal) if you haven't already - EDD may require it and it's a separate step from your UI claim filing.

how long does it take to actually get the money after you file? i keep seeing different answers online
0 coins
Evelyn Kelly
Official EDD guidance says 3-5 weeks for your first payment after filing if everything goes smoothly and your claim isn't flagged for adjudication. In practice many people see their first deposit closer to 3-4 weeks. After that initial wait, payments come every two weeks after you certify.
0 coins
Diez Ellis
3-5 weeks is a long time when ur bills are due tho
0 coins
Christian Burns
Yeah that initial wait is brutal. Make sure you certify for your first available week as soon as the system lets you - don't wait thinking there's nothing to do yet. Every delay on your end adds to the overall wait.

Can I ask a dumb question - when you file for unemployment does your old employer find out? Like does EDD contact them right away?
0 coins
Heather Tyson
Not a dumb question at all. Yes, EDD does notify your former employer when you file a claim. The employer has the opportunity to respond and either confirm the layoff or contest the claim if they believe you don't qualify. For a straightforward restructuring/layoff this is usually just a formality - employers rarely contest legitimate layoffs.
0 coins
Jenna Sloan
ok good i was worried about it being awkward, i still need a reference from them
0 coins
Raul Neal
The employer notification is standard procedure and doesn't affect your relationship with them unless they actively contest your claim, which is unlikely in a layoff situation.

dont forget you can also file by phone if the website is giving you trouble. the EDD customer service number is 1-800-300-5616 but honestly getting through is a nightmare. i spent 3 days trying to call when i first filed

AuthorI've heard EDD phone lines are really hard to get through on. Is there a best time to call?

supposedly early tuesday or wednesday mornings right when they open at 8am but even then its not guaranteed. i eventually gave up and just did everything online

If you really need to reach an EDD agent by phone - either to file by phone or to resolve an issue - Claimyr at claimyr.com has been the most reliable method I've seen. Normal redialing strategies stopped working for me after the first few times. The video demo is at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works before trying it.

one thing i messed up when i first filed - i put the wrong last day of work and it caused a whole issue with my claim dates. double and triple check every date you enter especially your last day worked and your hire date

Kiara Greene
AuthorCan you fix mistakes after you submit the claim or is it locked in?
0 coins
Muhammad Hobbs
you CAN fix it but you have to call EDD or send a message through UI Online and it takes time. better to just get it right the first time. i lost almost 2 weeks of benefits because of the date confusion
0 coins
Evelyn Kelly
This is really good advice. The claim effective date is set to the Sunday of the week you file, and your last day worked affects your benefit year calculation. Errors here can cost real money.

I filed last week and my status just says 'pending' on UI Online. Is that normal? Nobody told me what pending means
0 coins
Evelyn Kelly
' Pending is completely normal at first - it means your claim has been received and is being processed. It should update to 'either' approved or move 'into' adjudication within a few business days to a few weeks. If it stays pending for more than 3 weeks without any update or contact from EDD,'that s when'you d want to followup.
0 coins
Vanessa Figueroa
ok thank you. i saw someone else say theirs was pending for 6 weeks and i freaked out
0 coins
Raul Neal
Six weeks pending without resolution is unusual and usually means there's an issue EDD hasn't communicated clearly. If you hit 4+ weeks with no movement, reaching an actual EDD agent becomes important - whether that's through the phone line or a service like Claimyr (claimyr.com) that can get you connected faster.

also check your spam folder - EDD sends notices by email sometimes and they end up in spam. could be info in there about your claim status

What's the maximum amount you can get from California EDD unemployment? I make pretty decent money and want to know if it'll even be worth it to bother filing
0 coins
Heather Tyson
The maximum weekly benefit amount in California is currently $450. Your actual benefit amount is calculated based on your highest earning quarter during your base period (roughly the 12-18 months before you filed). For most full-time workers earning above about $46,000 annually you'd be at or near the maximum. Even if it doesn't fully replace your income it's definitely worth filing - every bit helps during a job search.

Abby Marshall
$450 a week is less than I was expecting honestly but yeah I'll still file. Better than nothing.

Paloma Clark
yeah its not gonna replace your salary if you were making decent money but its 100% worth doing. takes maybe an hour to file

does being fired affect unemployment or only getting laid off?? my situation is kind of complicated
0 coins
Heather Tyson
It depends entirely on WHY you were fired. If you were fired for misconduct - things like intentional policy violations, theft, harassment - California EDD will likely disqualify you. But if you were fired for performance reasons, personality conflicts, downsizing disguised as a firing, or similar situations that aren't considered 'misconduct' under EDD definitions, you can still qualify. The distinction is whether your actions were willful and intentional.
0 coins
Noland Curtis
ok so being fired for 'not meeting performance standards' might still qualify me?
0 coins
Heather Tyson
Potentially yes. Performance-based terminations are often approved for unemployment because the employee typically wasn't intentionally violating rules. File the claim and let EDD make the determination - don't disqualify yourself before you even try.

i got fired once and still got unemployment. they said my situation didnt meet the misconduct standard. definitely apply no matter what

I'm reading this thread and just want to share that I successfully filed last month after never having done it before. Took me about 40 minutes on UI Online, had my money within 3 weeks. The process is way less scary than it seems. OP you've got this!!

Just have all your documents ready before you start and read each question carefully. You can save progress and come back if needed too - you don't have to do it all at once.

random question but can you collect unemployment if you quit your job? my friend says you can if you had a good reason
0 coins
Heather Tyson
Your friend is partially right. California has what's called 'good cause' for voluntary quits. If you left because of unsafe working conditions, significant reduction in pay or hours, documented harassment, medical reasons, or certain family emergencies, EDD may still approve your claim. But you have to prove the good cause - it's not automatic like a layoff. Standard 'I didn't like my job' quits don't qualify.
0 coins
Drew Hathaway
interesting. my situation is that my commute went from 20 minutes to 2 hours after they moved offices. does that count?
0 coins
Evelyn Kelly
A significant change in working conditions like a major commute increase can potentially qualify as good cause depending on the circumstances. File the claim, explain the situation honestly, and let EDD evaluate it. Many people don't apply because they think they don't qualify when they actually do.

Update: I've been on unemployment for 6 weeks now and wanted to come back to say the certification process is actually pretty easy once you get used to it. Takes like 5 minutes every two weeks. Just don't forget to do it on time.

I want to flag something I don't see mentioned yet - after your California EDD claim is approved you'll be mailed an EDD debit card (the Bank of America ReliaCard) unless you set up direct deposit. Make sure your mailing address in myEDD is current and correct. Several people I know had their cards go to old addresses and it delayed their payments significantly. You can update your address in your myEDD profile settings.

Kiara Greene
AuthorI was going to set up direct deposit - is that available during the initial filing or do I have to wait?
0 coins
Laila Prince
You can enter your bank account information for direct deposit during the initial claim filing process. It's one of the steps in UI Online. Direct deposit is faster and more reliable than waiting for the debit card.

I accidentally had them mail the card to my work address from force of habit. Had to request a replacement card which took another 2 weeks. Set up direct deposit if you can!!

The whole EDD system is a NIGHTMARE honestly. I've been trying to file for 3 weeks and keep getting errors on the website. Called their number 47 times in two days and either get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting 2 hours. How is this legal?? People are literally losing their homes because they can't navigate this broken system. RANT OVER but also if anyone has advice I'm all ears

I completely feel your frustration - EDD's phone system is genuinely terrible. When I hit that same wall I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me get through to an actual EDD agent without the endless hold/disconnect cycle. There's a walkthrough video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. I know it sounds too good to be true but it actually worked for me when nothing else was.

The 'unable to process request' error on UI Online is often a browser issue. Try a completely different browser (Chrome works best), clear all cookies and cache first, and if possible try from a different device or network. Also try submitting in the morning before traffic peaks.

Serious question - does California EDD count vacation payout from your employer as wages that affect your benefits? My employer paid out my accrued PTO when I was laid off and I'm not sure if that delays when I can start collecting
0 coins
Heather Tyson
Yes, vacation and PTO payout can affect your claim. California EDD may treat lump-sum vacation payouts as wages for the week(s) they cover, which could delay when your benefit eligibility begins. You're required to report this during your claim. It doesn't necessarily disqualify you - it may just shift your benefit start date forward by however many weeks the vacation pay covers.
0 coins
Dominique Adams
So if I got 2 weeks of PTO payout, my benefits might not start until 2 weeks after my last day?
0 coins
Heather Tyson
That's roughly correct - EDD allocates the PTO payout over the equivalent number of weeks and your benefit eligibility typically begins after that period. It varies based on how EDD specifically applies it to your claim, but report it accurately and EDD will calculate it correctly.

Just adding to this thread for anyone who finds it later - the entire California EDD UI Online filing experience is about 30-40 questions total. They ask about your work history, your separation reason, your availability to work, your contact info, and bank details. None of the questions are trick questions if you're a straightforward layoff. Take your time, read carefully, and you'll be fine.
