How many jobs do you need to apply for to qualify for California EDD unemployment?
Ok so I just got laid off from my warehouse job last week and I'm trying to figure out the job search requirements before I file my first weekly certification. My supervisor told me I needed to apply to like 3 jobs a week but my cousin said it's more than that now. I honestly have no idea what the actual requirement is and I don't want to mess up my claim by doing it wrong. Does California EDD actually verify how many jobs you applied to? Do I need to keep some kind of log? I've been going on Indeed and applying to stuff but I didn't write anything down because I didn't know I was supposed to. Really stressed about this because I need these benefits to cover rent next month and I don't want to get disqualified for not following the rules correctly.

The current California EDD job search requirement is 3 job search activities per week when you certify for your weekly benefits. These don't all have to be direct job applications either - contacting an employer, attending a job fair, or registering with an employment agency all count as valid activities. But yes, you absolutely need to keep a written log of everything. EDD can and does conduct random audits where they ask you to prove your job search activities. Your log should include the employer name, contact info, date of contact, position applied for, and method of contact. Start keeping records immediately even for the ones you already did - try to reconstruct what you remember.

AuthorWait so 3 per week total or 3 applications specifically? Because I did apply to like 5 jobs this week but didn't do anything else. Does that count as 5 activities or just as 1?

Each application to a separate employer counts as one activity. So 5 applications to 5 different companies = 5 job search activities. You're actually in good shape for this week, just make sure you log all of them with the details I mentioned.

this is correct, each employer contact counts separately. I work in HR and we do get calls from EDD occasionally verifying applicants so they def check sometimes

I was in the same boat when I first filed. Honestly the job search log thing tripped me up too. Go to the EDD website and download their job search record template - it lays out exactly what info you need to capture for each activity. The main thing is employer name, date, how you applied, and the position. Keep it in a spreadsheet or even just a notes app on your phone. When you certify weekly online through UI Online you'll just check a box confirming you did your job search activities - they don't ask you to submit the actual log unless audited.

AuthorOh thank god it's just a checkbox and not uploading proof every week. That makes it way less stressful. But I should still keep the log just in case right?

100% yes keep the log. If you get audited and can't produce records they can disqualify you AND issue an overpayment notice requiring you to pay back everything you received. Not worth the risk.

seconding this. keep your records for at least 18 months after your claim ends just to be safe

Quick tip that helped me - I actually called EDD when I first started my claim to clarify the job search requirements because I'd heard different things from different people. Getting through was impossible at first, kept getting the 'high call volume' message and getting disconnected. A friend told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it basically got me connected to an actual EDD rep without sitting on hold forever. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. The agent I spoke with confirmed the 3-activity minimum and explained what counts and what doesn't. Worth it just to get the info straight from EDD directly.

does that actually work?? I've been trying to get someone on the phone for a week about my adjudication issue

Yeah it worked for me, got through in about 20 minutes instead of spending half my day redialing. The EDD agent was actually really helpful once I got connected.

gonna look into this. I've been trying to ask about my job search requirements for standby status which is apparently different and I cannot get anyone on the phone

JUST TO CLARIFY because there's a lot of confusion about this - the 3 job search activities per week is the standard requirement BUT there are exceptions. If your employer gives you a return to work date within 60 days you can request standby status which WAIVES the job search requirement entirely. Also if you're in approved training through EDD you may be exempt. Don't assume you need to do job searches without checking your specific situation first!!

Atticus Domingo
AuthorMy layoff is permanent so I definitely don't have a return date. So the 3 per week applies to me for sure.
0 coins
Paloma Clark
Yep then the standard requirement applies. Also make sure you registered for CalJOBS - EDD requires that as part of your initial claim requirements and some people forget that step entirely

Heather Tyson
oh no I completely forgot about caljobs. Does that disqualify me if I didn't do it right away?
0 coins
Paloma Clark
It won't automatically disqualify you but you need to do it ASAP. Log into your UI Online account and check your to-do items, it should prompt you if CalJOBS registration is still pending

ok genuine question - does EDD actually check if you really applied to those jobs or can you just put fake companies on the log lol
0 coins
Beth Ford
Please don't do this. EDD does conduct audits and they contact employers to verify. If they find fraudulent job search records you'll face disqualification, overpayment, and potentially fraud charges. It's genuinely not worth it over 3 job applications a week.

ok ok fair point. was mostly joking but yeah makes sense not to risk it

they actually take this seriously. A coworker of mine got caught doing exactly this and had to repay 6 months of benefits plus penalties

I remember being so confused about this when I filed last year after getting laid off from my retail job. I thought job search meant only submitting formal applications through company websites. Didn't realize that reaching out to a former colleague about a position, attending a networking event, or even visiting a company in person to drop off a resume all count. The definition of 'job search activity' is actually pretty broad which makes hitting 3 per week pretty manageable once you know what qualifies.

Atticus Domingo
AuthorThat's actually really helpful because applying to 3 jobs every single week when jobs in my field don't post that frequently seemed impossible
0 coins
Jenna Sloan
Exactly! Mix it up - one week you might apply to 2 postings and attend a virtual job fair. Counts as 3 activities and keeps your search varied anyway

Christian Burns
LinkedIn activity counts too right? Like connecting with a hiring manager or recruiter?
0 coins
Jenna Sloan
Yes as long as you can document it - screenshot the message you sent and save the recruiter's contact info. Any direct employer contact works.

I've been on unemployment twice now and the job search requirement honestly isn't that hard to meet if you take it seriously. What gets people in trouble is not keeping the log and then panicking when EDD asks for records. I use a simple Google Sheet - columns for date, company name, position, contact method, contact info, and outcome. Takes about 2 minutes per entry and you'll never stress about an audit.

AuthorThis is exactly what I'm going to set up today. Simple and organized.

Also pro tip - update it the same day you do the activity. Trying to reconstruct a week's worth of job search from memory is a nightmare

Google Sheets is great for this. I also keep screenshots of all my confirmation emails from online applications in a folder just as backup documentation

wait I'm confused. my friend told me California removed the job search requirement? Like at some point during COVID they suspended it? Is that still suspended?
0 coins
Beth Ford
No, that ended a long time ago. The job search requirement was temporarily suspended during the pandemic emergency period but it has been fully reinstated. As of 2025 you absolutely must complete and document your 3 weekly job search activities to remain eligible for benefits.

Muhammad Hobbs
oh wow ok. my friend has been on unemployment for a few months and said he doesn't do job searches. he might be in serious trouble then
0 coins
Paloma Clark
Your friend needs to read his eligibility requirements carefully. If he's been certifying that he completed job searches without actually doing them that's UI fraud and EDD does catch up with people eventually

Ugh I've been trying to get through to EDD for literally 2 weeks about a different issue - my claim went into adjudication and I have no idea why. Every time I call I get disconnected before even getting in queue. The job search thing is somewhat clear online but adjudication questions are impossible to get answered without actually talking to someone. Someone mentioned Claimyr up above and I finally tried it at claimyr.com after seeing the video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 and holy cow I actually got through. EDD agent explained my adjudication issue was just an employer verification thing and should clear in a few days. If you have any questions you can't get answered online just try it.
0 coins
Atticus Domingo
AuthorSo glad it worked out for you. Did they tell you anything about what triggers adjudication? I'm worried about what might happen with mine.
0 coins
Kiara Greene
They said it usually happens when EDD needs to verify something with your former employer - either they contested the claim or there was info that needed confirmation. Totally routine apparently, just takes time
0 coins
Heather Tyson
My claim has been in adjudication for 5 weeks now, that doesn't sound routine at all at that point
0 coins
Kiara Greene
Yeah 5 weeks is a long time, definitely worth trying to get an agent on the phone to check the status

Can someone clarify the standby status job search thing? I mentioned it above but still confused. My employer said there might be layoffs but also might bring us back in 6 weeks. Do I have to do job searches or not? I registered for UI just in case but haven't certified yet because I don't know if standby applies to me.
0 coins
Paloma Clark
If your employer has given you a specific return to work date within 60 days AND EDD approves your standby request, you're exempt from job search requirements during that period. But you have to specifically REQUEST standby status - it's not automatic. When you certify, there's an option to indicate you're on standby. EDD will then contact your employer to verify the return date.
0 coins
Evelyn Kelly
Ok so I need to actually request it. How do I do that - through UI Online or by calling?
0 coins
Paloma Clark
You can indicate it during certification online. There will be questions about whether you expect to return to work for your employer - answer yes and provide the expected date. That initiates the standby process.
0 coins
Beth Ford
Also important - if the return date comes and goes and you don't return, standby ends and regular job search requirements kick back in immediately. Make sure you update EDD if the situation changes

Just want to add something nobody mentioned - the type of work you apply for matters too. EDD expects you to apply for work that's suitable given your background and experience. If you're a software engineer applying only to fast food jobs that might raise flags. Your job search should reflect genuine efforts to find comparable employment to what you lost.
0 coins
Atticus Domingo
AuthorThat's a good point I hadn't thought about. I'll make sure the jobs I'm applying to are at least somewhat related to my field.
0 coins
Joy Olmedo
The technical term is 'suitable work' - EDD has guidelines on this. Generally in the first few months of a claim they expect you to look for work comparable to your last job. After a longer period of unemployment the definition of suitable work broadens.
0 coins
Jenna Sloan
This is accurate. After a certain number of weeks you're expected to expand your search. Early in a claim though they want to see you pursuing comparable employment first

this whole thread is really helpful. One more question - what happens if you have a week where you genuinely can't find 3 activities? Like holidays or if you're sick? Do you just not certify that week?
0 coins
Kingston Bellamy
You should still certify even if you struggled to hit 3 activities. If you're sick, document that - there are circumstances EDD considers valid reasons for reduced job search. Don't skip certification though because that creates gaps in your claim that can cause problems.

Christian Burns
What if I was out of town for a family emergency?
0 coins
Kingston Bellamy
Document everything. EDD can make exceptions for genuine hardship situations but you have to be honest on your certification about your circumstances that week. Don't just check yes to job searches when you didn't do them.
0 coins
Morita Montoya
Also note that if you were physically unable to work that week due to illness you may not be eligible for benefits that specific week anyway - able and available to work is a separate eligibility requirement

I got hit with an overpayment last year partly because of job search issues - EDD audited my claim and I couldn't produce adequate records for several weeks. The appeal process is brutal and stressful. Please please please keep your job search logs from day one. Don't learn this lesson the hard way like I did. It's not worth it.

AuthorThis is honestly the most sobering comment in this thread. I'm setting up my log right now.

Seriously just spend 5 minutes after each application or activity updating a document. Future you will be incredibly grateful. The overpayment notice I got was for over $4,000 and the whole appeals process took months.
0 coins
Sasha Reese
Sorry you went through that. Did you end up winning the appeal at least?
0 coins
Noland Curtis
Partial victory - got about half of it waived because I could prove I was genuinely looking for work even without perfect records. But it was months of stress that could have been completely avoided with better record-keeping from the start

does it matter what time of day you do the job applications? like I do most of mine late at night when I can't sleep lol
0 coins
Jenna Sloan
Haha no, time of day doesn't matter at all. An application submitted at 2am counts exactly the same as one at 2pm. Just make sure you're documenting the date correctly.

lol ok good. i've been applying to like 5-6 things a week so I think I'm good, just wanted to make sure night applications weren't somehow disqualified

I'm a few months into my claim and I've been doing way more than 3 per week - like 10-15 applications. Does doing extra help in any way? Does EDD look more favorably on people who do more?
0 coins
Beth Ford
EDD doesn't reward volume above the minimum - 3 activities meets the requirement the same as 15 does from an eligibility standpoint. However, doing more applications obviously increases your chances of actually getting hired which ends the need for benefits altogether. Focus on quality of applications over raw quantity.
0 coins
Vanessa Figueroa
That makes sense. I've been spray applying everywhere hoping something sticks but maybe I should be more targeted
0 coins
Isaiah Cross
Quality over quantity is definitely the right move. A targeted application with a customized cover letter will outperform 10 generic submissions almost every time

Hey OP - circling back since you mentioned you were stressed. Did you get everything sorted out? Curious if your first certification went through ok.

Atticus Domingo
AuthorYes! Filed my first weekly certification and it went through fine. I set up a Google Sheet for my job search log and I'm keeping it updated every time I do an activity. Got 4 activities documented this week already. Still nervous about the whole adjudication wait but the job search piece at least I feel good about now.

That's great to hear. The first certification is always the most stressful because everything is new. It gets easier.

Glad it worked out. For anyone else reading this thread - the job search requirement really isn't that hard to meet and document if you just make it a habit from the start. 3 activities per week is very achievable and keeping records takes less than 5 minutes per week total.

Atticus Domingo
AuthorAgreed. Also for anyone struggling to get answers from EDD directly I'd second the Claimyr recommendation from earlier in the thread - claimyr.com got me connected to an actual agent when I had some questions that weren't answered anywhere online. Way better than spending hours redialing.
