How long does it take to hear back from California EDD unemployment after filing?
So I filed my initial unemployment claim about two weeks ago and I've heard absolutely nothing back from California EDD. No letter, no email, no update on UI Online - nothing. I'm a former graphic designer who got laid off when my agency downsized, and I've been completely in the dark about where my claim stands. I did the ID.me verification thing right away and submitted everything they asked for. My UI Online dashboard just says 'pending' with no explanation. I've tried calling the 1-800-300-5616 number probably a dozen times and either get a busy signal or get told the call volume is too high and get disconnected. At what point should I actually be worried? How long does it take to hear back from California EDD unemployment after you first file? Is two weeks normal or am I already behind some kind of invisible 8-ball here?

Two weeks is honestly still within normal range for initial processing, but I get the anxiety - I had the exact same experience last year. After I filed, I didn't hear anything for almost 3 weeks and then suddenly got my determination letter and my first payment within days of each other. The pending status doesn't necessarily mean something's wrong, it just means they're still processing. That said, you should keep filing your weekly certifications every week even while it says pending - a LOT of people don't realize that and then miss weeks they can never get back.

AuthorWait I didn't know I was supposed to be filing weekly certifications already?? I thought you wait until you're approved and then start? I might have already missed a week oh no

Natasha Romanova
Yes file them NOW. Go into UI Online and certify for any weeks that are available. You can usually certify for up to 4 back weeks I think but don't wait any longer. Call EDD if you're unsure but definitely don't skip certifications thinking you wait for approval first - that's a really common mistake

This is accurate. The weekly certifications are separate from the approval process. Your claim approval and your weekly certifications run parallel. Missing certification weeks means missing payment for those weeks, period. File immediately.

The official timeframe from California EDD is supposedly 3 weeks for an initial determination but in practice it varies a LOT. If your claim is straightforward (laid off, no disputes from employer, wages on record), it can actually be faster. If there's anything complicated - like your employer disputed the separation or your base period wages are unclear - it can trigger adjudication which adds anywhere from 2 to 8+ weeks on top of that. The 'pending' status unfortunately doesn't tell you which situation you're in.

AuthorMy layoff was totally clean, they gave me a formal notice and everything, so hopefully that means no dispute? My employer definitely knew I was filing

Javier Gomez
That's a good sign. If you have documentation of the formal layoff notice keep it handy just in case, but a clean documented layoff usually processes without adjudication. You should hear something within another week or so based on what you're describing

yeah my boss tried to call it a 'resignation' when it was clearly a layoff and THAT sent me into adjudication for 6 weeks. nightmare. document everything people

Honestly after going through this myself the phone situation is what kills me the most. You can have a totally valid claim just sitting there and you can't reach anyone to even check on it. I was in your exact spot and burning through my savings while waiting. Someone in another thread mentioned Claimyr - it's a service that basically gets you through to an actual California EDD agent without you having to spend hours redialing. You go to claimyr.com and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. I was skeptical at first but it helped me actually talk to someone who could see exactly what was happening with my claim. Saved me a week of just stewing in uncertainty.

Oliver Weber
AuthorI'll check out that video, the phone situation has been genuinely awful. Did they actually tell you useful information when you got through to someone?

Malik Thomas
Yes - the agent I spoke with could see exactly where my claim was in processing and whether there were any flags on it. In my case there was a minor issue with my base period wages that I never would have known about otherwise. Got it fixed over the phone and was approved within days

gonna look into this claimyr thing too, ive called edd like 20 times in the past 2 weeks and given up every single time

Does it actually work or is it one of those things that sounds good and doesn't deliver? Genuinely asking because I need to talk to someone at EDD badly

ok so i went through this recently and here is what i learned the hard way. the 'how long does it take to hear back from unemployment' question has basically 4 different answers depending on your situation: 1. Simple claim, no issues = usually 2-4 weeks total 2. Employer disputes your separation = adjudication, add 4-8 weeks 3. Wage discrepancy in base period = more investigation, variable 4. ID.me issues or identity flags = can be very quick or very slow depending Since you did ID.me already that's one thing off the list. The fact that your dashboard shows 'pending' and not 'adjudication' is actually a slightly better sign - adjudication pending looks different in UI Online.

Oliver Weber
AuthorOh interesting I didn't know adjudication looked different in the portal. Mine literally just says pending with no other details
0 coins
Freya Larsen
Right, if it went into formal adjudication you'd usually see something about an issue being reviewed or a questionnaire to complete. Plain pending usually means it's just in the standard processing queue. Still annoying but less alarming

From a practical standpoint, here's what you should be doing right now regardless of your pending status: 1. File your weekly certifications - do not skip a single week 2. Maintain your job search activities (3 employer contacts per week, log them) 3. Check UI Online every 2-3 days for any new notices or action items 4. Check your physical mail - EDD still sends paper notices for some things 5. Check your spam/junk folder for EDD emails The job search requirement is active from week one of your claim even before approval. If you get approved but your job search logs show you weren't searching during the pending weeks, that can create a problem.
0 coins
Oliver Weber
AuthorWait the job search requirement starts immediately even before I'm approved?? I've been doing some searching anyway but I should have been logging it formally? This is a lot of stuff nobody tells you
0 coins
NebulaNinja
Yes, it's active from your claim effective date. You need 3 employer contacts per week minimum. You can log them in UI Online under the job search record section. You don't submit them weekly but you need to have them recorded and available if EDD ever asks to review them

Natasha Romanova
CalJOBS registration is also technically required - if you haven't done that yet do it now. It's at caljobs.ca.gov and you register as a job seeker. EDD may ask you to verify you did this

THREE WEEKS for me and counting. No letter. No determination. No explanation. I call and either get a busy signal or a disconnect. I've sent messages through UI Online's Ask EDD and gotten automated responses. This system is BROKEN and it doesn't matter what anyone says about 'normal processing times' - when you have bills due there is no acceptable wait time. I feel for you OP because I'm right there with you and I'm losing my mind.

Have you tried Claimyr? I mentioned it above - claimyr.com - it gets you through to an actual live EDD agent which is nearly impossible to do on your own right now. It's how I finally found out what was happening with mine. After 3 weeks you deserve an actual answer
0 coins
Omar Zaki
I'll try anything at this point honestly. The Ask EDD messages are useless, calling is useless. Going to check out that claimyr link

For what it's worth the 3 week mark is around when EDD typically sends determination letters even for claims they're still processing - sometimes the letter and first payment arrive nearly simultaneously. Doesn't make the wait any less awful though

my situation was a little different i got laid off from a restaurant job and had like three different employers in my base period which i think complicated things. took almost 5 weeks to hear back. but when i finally did i got back pay for all the weeks i certified even the ones during the wait so at least there was that
0 coins
Oliver Weber
AuthorThat's actually really reassuring to hear that the back pay covers the waiting period weeks, I was wondering if you lose those weeks forever
0 coins
Isabella Oliveira
nope as long as you certified every week you get paid for them once approved. that's why certifying even while pending is so important

Emma Wilson
this is the most important thing in this whole thread honestly. certify every single week no matter what. even if it feels pointless

I'm in a similar situation but I'm also confused about something - does the 'how long does it take to hear back from California EDD unemployment' question change if you had a period of self-employment mixed in? Like I did some freelance work between my last two W-2 jobs and I'm not sure how that affects my base period calculation
0 coins
NebulaNinja
Self-employment and freelance income won't count toward your base period wage credits since those aren't reported as UI-covered wages. Only W-2 wages reported to EDD count. If your self-employment period was significant it could affect your weekly benefit amount calculation but wouldn't necessarily trigger adjudication on its own
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
Ok that makes sense, so my benefit amount might be lower because of the freelance months but the actual approval process shouldn't be affected? That's helpful to know
0 coins
Freya Larsen
Correct - they only look at UI-covered wages for the base period, so the freelance stuff kind of just... disappears from the calculation. Your WBA will be based on whatever your highest quarter of W-2 wages was

just want to say this thread is really helpful. I filed last friday and was panicking thinking i did something wrong since nothing showed up immediately. now i understand the pending status better. going to go file my weekly certification right now actually

Good! Don't forget to also register on CalJOBS if you haven't and start logging your job search contacts. Better to have that all set up from the beginning than to scramble later

The thing that drove me crazy was that EDD sent my determination letter to an old address even though I had updated everything in UI Online. So I technically had a deadline to appeal something and almost missed it because I didn't get the physical letter until a neighbor forwarded it. PLEASE make sure your mailing address in UI Online is 100% correct and also check your mail religiously during this period
0 coins
Oliver Weber
AuthorOh that's a scary scenario, I'm going to double check my address in UI Online right now
0 coins
Emma Wilson
Do it. Also make sure your email address is correct in your profile and that edd.ca.gov isn't blocked by your spam filter. I had two important emails go to spam

This is excellent advice. EDD still uses physical mail for many official notices including overpayment notices, appeals deadlines, and some determination letters. Address accuracy in UI Online is genuinely critical

lol the 'how long does it take to hear back from unemployment' question is basically 'how long is a piece of string' at this point. ive seen people get approved in 10 days and ive seen claims sit for 12 weeks. the variance is wild
0 coins
Javier Gomez
This is unfortunately accurate. The unpredictability is one of the most stressful aspects. The official guidance says 3 weeks but reality varies enormously based on claim complexity, employer cooperation, time of year, and honestly just processing backlogs
0 coins
Chloe Taylor
exactly. and calling to check doesn't help because you can never get through anyway
0 coins
Malik Thomas
That's why services like Claimyr (claimyr.com) exist honestly - fills the gap between 'you should call EDD' and 'you literally cannot get through to EDD.' It's not perfect but it's way better than spending 3 hours hitting redial

I went through this process last spring. Filed, got pending status, waited about 16 days, got my approval letter and my first payment deposited within 48 hours of each other. The whole thing was anticlimactic in a good way - all that anxiety for a pretty smooth process. I think if you have a clean layoff with a cooperating employer and your wages are on record, the system actually works reasonably well. It's when complications enter that things get hairy.

Oliver Weber
AuthorThis is the outcome I'm hoping for. My situation sounds similar to yours so maybe I'm worrying too much

Honestly probably yes. The waiting is the hardest part but the portal updating to 'pending payment' and then seeing that EDD deposit is a genuinely great feeling after all the stress

One thing I don't see mentioned - have you checked whether EDD sent you any questionnaires through UI Online? Sometimes they need additional information to process your claim (details about your separation, confirmation of your last day worked, etc.) and if you don't respond to those questionnaires it puts everything on hold. They don't always notify you loudly that there's something waiting for you to complete.
0 coins
Oliver Weber
AuthorI just went and checked and there's nothing showing in my inbox or action items section. So at least that's not the holdup
0 coins
Anastasia Ivanova
Good. That's one less thing to worry about. Some people go weeks not realizing there was a questionnaire sitting there. If you do see anything appear in there respond to it immediately - those usually have deadlines
0 coins
Natasha Romanova
This is a really good point. The UI Online notifications for required questionnaires can be pretty subtle. Worth checking every couple days not just for status updates but for any required actions

can i ask a dumb question - when they say weekly certifications do you have to certify every 7 days exactly or is there a window? like what if you miss the exact day
0 coins
NebulaNinja
Not a dumb question at all. Your certification week runs Sunday to Saturday. You can certify starting on Sunday of the week after the week you're certifying for. So if you're certifying for the week of Sunday May 4 through Saturday May 10, you can start certifying on Sunday May 11. You have until the Saturday of the following week to certify before that week is considered late
0 coins
Sean Murphy
oh ok so theres actually a window not just one exact day. that's less stressful than i thought
0 coins
Freya Larsen
Yes there's a window but definitely don't wait until the last possible day because UI Online has occasional outages and you don't want to be locked out on deadline day

After 4 weeks of pending status I finally just drove to an EDD office in person. I know they're appointment-only now but I showed up and explained I had a time-sensitive issue and they actually saw me. Found out there was a flag on my account from a wage discrepancy that nobody had notified me about. Had it resolved same day. Sometimes the old fashioned approach works.
0 coins
Oliver Weber
AuthorWait you can still go in person? I thought they basically ended walk-in appointments
0 coins
StarStrider
It's appointment-preferred but if you show up and explain your situation sometimes they work with you, especially if your claim is significantly delayed. Results may vary by location though
0 coins
Javier Gomez
In-person visits can be very effective for certain issues especially if there's something on your account that's not visible to you in UI Online. It's worth knowing as an option after you've exhausted the phone and online approaches

Just an update since I was following this thread - I was in a similar situation when OP first posted. Mine finally resolved today at the 3 week and 2 day mark. Got an email saying my claim was approved and when I logged into UI Online it showed all my certified weeks queued for payment. The money should hit my EDD debit card within 3 business days according to the site. Hang in there OP.

For anyone still struggling to get through to a live EDD agent - I used Claimyr about a month ago when my claim hit 5 weeks with no movement. Got through to an agent in about 45 minutes versus my previous record of never. The agent was actually able to explain exactly what was holding up my claim (employer hadn't responded to EDD's inquiry within the required timeframe) and what the next steps were. Honestly I wish I'd known about it at week 2 instead of week 5. claimyr.com if you want to check it out, there's a video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10

Did the agent you spoke with actually have authority to do anything or just explain what was happening?

Luca Marino
Both actually - they explained the situation and also noted in my file that the employer inquiry deadline had passed which triggered the next step in the process. So it wasn't just informational, talking to an agent actually moved things forward

I ended up trying Claimyr after someone above mentioned it - got through to EDD yesterday. Turns out I had a form error from when I first filed that was silently holding everything up. Would have never known without actually talking to someone

I work in HR and see unemployment claims from the employer side sometimes. For what it's worth - when EDD contacts an employer to verify a separation, employers typically have 10 days to respond. If the employer doesn't respond within that window, EDD is supposed to proceed with processing based on the claimant's statement alone. So if your employer is dragging their feet on responding to EDD it shouldn't hold your claim indefinitely.
0 coins
Oliver Weber
AuthorThat's really useful context, thank you. So even if my former employer doesn't play nice, EDD should still process my claim after a certain point?
0 coins
Nia Davis
Correct. Non-response from an employer after the deadline isn't a valid reason to hold a claim indefinitely. EDD proceeds based on your account of the separation. The employer can still dispute later but they lose certain rights by not responding in the initial window
0 coins
NebulaNinja
This is accurate. Employer non-response is actually more common than people think and it does not doom a claim. EDD has a process for this and claimants generally prevail when the employer fails to respond in time

Update from OP - my claim just got approved!! It was exactly at the 3 week mark. I logged into UI Online this morning and the status had changed from pending to 'paid' for my first certified weeks. I'm honestly so relieved I could cry. Thank you everyone in this thread who helped me understand what was happening and what I needed to do. The tip about certifying immediately was huge - I had already certified two weeks so I'll be getting paid for both of those right away. If anyone else is in the waiting period just hang in there and keep certifying.
