How long after identity verification with California EDD unemployment will I get paid?
I finally got through the ID.me identity verification process for my California EDD unemployment claim last Thursday. The verification went through successfully and I got the confirmation email, but now I'm just sitting here waiting with zero idea of when I'll actually see money hit my account. My claim was originally filed about two weeks before I did the verification, so those weeks are just hanging there unprocessed. Does anyone have a realistic timeline for how long it takes after identity verification before California EDD actually releases your payment? I have rent due in 10 days and I'm starting to panic a little. I've tried calling EDD but can't get through to anyone. My UI Online account still just shows pending status on everything. Has anyone been through this recently and can tell me what to actually expect?

I went through this exact situation back in February. After my ID.me verification was confirmed, it took California EDD about 5 to 7 business days before my claim moved out of pending and into a paid status. The key thing is that the verification itself doesn't automatically release payment - EDD still has to process everything on their end after they receive the verification confirmation. So your clock really starts when EDD acknowledges it, not just when you complete the ID.me steps.

AuthorThat's helpful, thank you. Do you know if I need to do anything on my end in UI Online after verifying, or do I just wait?

You should just wait - but keep filing your weekly certifications every week without fail. Missing a week can cause additional delays even if your identity issue gets resolved.

AuthorOh wow, I didn't even think about that. I've been so focused on the identity thing that I almost forgot about weekly certs. Filing right now, thank you!

The timeline varies quite a bit honestly. Some people see payment within 3-4 business days after ID.me verification goes through, others wait 2-3 weeks. It depends on whether your claim has any other flags or issues beyond just the identity verification hold. If there's anything else triggering a review - like your previous employer contesting the claim or income discrepancies - the identity verification resolving won't automatically clear those other holds.

this is the part that got me, i verified identity and thought everything was done but turns out my employer had flagged something and i had TWO separate issues holding up my claim. had to deal with each one separately

AuthorHow would I even know if there's a second issue? My UI Online just says pending and doesn't give details on why.

That's the frustrating reality of the California EDD system. Often the only way to get specifics is to actually speak with an EDD representative. The online portal is notoriously vague about the reasons for holds.

Honestly after I verified my identity I was still stuck waiting and couldn't get anyone on the phone for almost two weeks. A friend told me about Claimyr - it's basically a service that gets you connected to an actual California EDD agent without you having to sit on hold forever. I was skeptical but tried it through claimyr.com and it worked. The agent I spoke with was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my payment after identity verification and pushed it through same day. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see it before trying. Given your rent situation I'd look into it.

AuthorI've never heard of this before. Is it legitimate? I'm nervous about anything involving my EDD claim.

Completely understand the hesitation. I did a lot of googling before I used it. It just gets you connected to EDD on the phone - you're still talking directly to an actual EDD agent, Claimyr just handles the hold time nightmare.

I've seen this mentioned a few times on here. Multiple people seem to have had success with it for exactly this kind of situation where you need an agent to actually look at your claim.

The thing people don't realize is that identity verification through ID.me is just one piece of the puzzle. After ID.me sends confirmation to California EDD, the claim goes into a queue for EDD staff to manually review and action. During busy periods that queue can be backed up significantly. The 5-7 business days estimate you'll see floating around is more of a best-case scenario. Realistically in 2025 I've heard of people waiting up to 3 weeks from verification confirmation to first payment hitting their account.

3 weeks?! that seems insane when people are waiting on that money for rent and food

Agreed it's a hardship. Unfortunately that's the reality of how backed up EDD processing can get. The weekly certifications still need to be filed throughout that waiting period though, otherwise you'll have even longer gaps once payment does release.

has anyone had it go faster than 5 days recently? trying to stay hopeful here lol

Miguel Ortiz
Yes definitely some people get it in 3-4 business days. It really depends on your specific claim circumstances and how busy EDD is at that moment. No way to predict which bucket you'll fall into.

went through this in march. verified identity on monday, payment hit my account the following wednesday. so about 9 days for me. but my claim was otherwise clean with no issues from my employer or anything. also I had been filing my weekly certs every week even while in the identity verification hold so all those weeks were just waiting to be released.

AuthorThis gives me some hope. My claim should be clean as far as I know - I left my job due to a layoff and my employer shouldn't be contesting anything.

If it's a straightforward layoff with no complications you're probably looking at the shorter end of the timeline. Fingers crossed for you!

I'm kind of confused about the whole ID.me thing. Is that the same as the identity verification California EDD sends you a letter about? I got a letter months ago asking me to verify and I just... didn't do it because I wasn't sure if it was a scam. Now my claim has been pending forever and I'm wondering if that's why.
0 coins
Dylan Wright
Yes that's almost certainly why your claim is stuck. The ID.me verification letters from EDD are legitimate, not a scam. You need to go to id.me and complete the verification process as soon as possible. Your payments are being held until you do.

Yara Haddad
oh my god I've been waiting for months thinking something else was wrong. doing this right now

NebulaKnight
This is actually really common - people don't complete the verification because they're worried about scams, which is a reasonable concern, but the ID.me process is the real one. Go through it at id.me and your claim should start moving again after EDD processes the confirmation.

The most frustrating part of my experience was that even AFTER identity was verified, my account still showed the same pending status for days. I kept thinking the verification hadn't gone through or something was wrong. It wasn't until I actually got an EDD agent on the phone that I found out EDD had received the verification and my payment was queued. The UI Online portal just doesn't update in real time at all.

Fatima Al-Mazrouei
AuthorThis is exactly my fear - that I'm waiting for a status change that might never visibly update. How did you get through to an EDD agent?
0 coins
Sofia Ramirez
Honestly I used Claimyr because I could not get through by calling directly. Spent like 4 hours one day trying to call EDD and kept getting the 'high call volume' message and getting disconnected. Claimyr at claimyr.com connected me to an actual agent within the same day. The video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 explains how it works if you're curious.

The portal not updating is SO real. Mine showed pending for almost a week after my payment had already been deposited. I had to check my bank directly because UI Online was still showing nothing.

ok so I have a question that might be dumb but what happens to all the weeks I was supposed to get paid while I was waiting to verify identity? do those payments just disappear or do they all come at once?
0 coins
NebulaKnight
Not a dumb question at all. As long as you filed your weekly certifications for those weeks, they should all come through once your identity is verified and the hold is released. You'd typically get a lump sum covering all those backdated weeks. That's why it's critical not to miss filing weekly certs even when your claim is stuck.
0 coins
Zainab Khalil
oh thank god. I was filing every week even though nothing was processing. so I should get all of those at once?
0 coins
NebulaKnight
Yes, that's how it typically works. All your approved weeks will release and pay out together. The amount can be significant depending on how many weeks you've been waiting.

ok this actually makes me feel so much better. was terrified those weeks were just gone

Something worth knowing: after your identity verification clears, if you haven't heard anything and it's been more than 10 business days, you should contact EDD directly because sometimes the ID.me confirmation doesn't properly sync with EDD's system. It's rare but it happens and your verification just sits in limbo. An EDD agent can manually confirm receipt and flag your claim for processing.
0 coins
Fatima Al-Mazrouei
AuthorHow would I even know if that happened? Is there a way to check?
0 coins
Ava Rodriguez
There's no direct way to check in UI Online unfortunately. The only real way to confirm EDD received your ID.me verification is to speak with an agent. That's why after about 10 business days of no movement, calling becomes necessary.

Sofia Ramirez
This happened to a person in my family - the verification was complete but EDD never got the confirmation. Took weeks to figure out. Speaking to an agent solved it in one call.

my identity verification cleared and then i got a SECOND letter asking for more documentation about my work history. so now im in some other review process on top of the identity thing. edd is really something else i swear
0 coins
Dylan Wright
That's actually a separate process - sounds like you might be in adjudication for your eligibility on top of the identity verification. These are two different holds and both have to be resolved before payment releases. Did the letter specify what kind of documentation they need?
0 coins
QuantumQuest
it was asking about my last employer and why i left and whether i was laid off or quit. i was laid off but i guess they need to verify that
0 coins
Dylan Wright
Send in everything they asked for as quickly as possible and keep copies of everything you submit. Adjudication for separation reason can take a few weeks on top of the identity timeline. Document everything.

EDD just does whatever they want whenever they want lol. I verified identity back in January, waited 4 weeks, still nothing, had to call and escalate and then magically payment appeared two days later. The system doesn't move unless you push it sometimes.

While I understand the frustration, the backlog issues are real - it's not always intentional inaction. But you're right that proactively contacting EDD often speeds things along rather than just waiting passively.

After my identity verification completed I noticed my UI Online account showed a new document in my inbox - it was a notice saying my identity had been confirmed and my claim was being processed. Did you check your inbox on UI Online? Not everyone gets this but it's a good sign if it appears because it means EDD has actually acknowledged the verification on their end.

Fatima Al-Mazrouei
AuthorI just checked and there's nothing new in my UI Online inbox other than the original claim stuff. Is that bad?
0 coins
Keisha Robinson
Not necessarily - not everyone gets that notice. The absence of it doesn't mean your verification wasn't received. Just means EDD's system didn't auto-generate that particular notice for your claim.

can someone explain what weekly certifications even are? I filed my initial claim and then nobody told me I had to keep filing something every week. am I in trouble?
0 coins
NebulaKnight
Weekly certifications are the form you fill out every week through UI Online to confirm you're still unemployed, still looking for work, and answer a few questions about whether you earned any money that week. They're how EDD knows to pay you for each specific week. If you haven't been filing them, you may have weeks that aren't payable because you didn't certify for them.
0 coins
Yara Haddad
how far back can I go to file them? I haven't filed any since my initial claim submission
0 coins
NebulaKnight
You should file them immediately for any weeks that are still within the certification window. Log into UI Online and look for the certification option - it'll show you which weeks you can still certify for. Weeks that fall outside the filing window may be gone unfortunately. Call EDD if you're missing many weeks as they sometimes have provisions for late certifications with valid reasons.

One thing that helped me track where I was in the process: EDD does sometimes send text notifications if you have a phone number on file. Check your notification settings in UI Online and make sure text alerts are turned on. That way when your identity verification is processed and your payment releases you'll get a text instead of having to check UI Online constantly.
0 coins
Fatima Al-Mazrouei
AuthorI didn't even know that was an option. Just turned on text notifications - thank you!

Yeah it's buried in the account settings. Not the most obvious thing to find. But it's way better than refreshing UI Online every hour hoping for a status change.

I verified with ID.me in April and got paid within 4 business days, no issues. My situation was a clean layoff from a company with no employer disputes. I think the clean layoff cases move faster because there's less for EDD to verify beyond the identity itself.

For anyone reading this thread who is still waiting after identity verification and can't get through to EDD by phone - Claimyr has worked for multiple people I know in this situation. The address is claimyr.com and there's a demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. When you have a specific question like 'did EDD receive my ID.me verification' or 'when will my payment release,' getting an agent directly is really the only way to get that answer. The online portal won't tell you.

is this the same service a couple people mentioned upthread? seems like a lot of people here have used it

Yes same service. It comes up a lot in EDD discussions because getting through to EDD by phone on your own is genuinely difficult and this solves that specific problem.

just want to add for OP - after you get paid for all those backlogged weeks, double check the amounts in your UI Online payment history against what you expected. sometimes EDD makes calculation errors when releasing multiple weeks at once and it's much easier to dispute an error right away than weeks or months later when records get complicated

Fatima Al-Mazrouei
AuthorGood point - I will definitely audit everything when it comes through. I've been keeping notes on which weeks I certified for so I can cross-reference.

the whole id.me thing is honestly kind of invasive imo like why does unemployment need all that biometric data just to verify who you are. i get that fraud is a problem but still feels like a lot
0 coins
Miguel Ortiz
It's a fair concern about privacy. The fraud that hit EDD during the pandemic years was massive though - billions of dollars. The identity verification requirements are a direct response to that. Whether the tradeoff is right is a valid debate, but the verification isn't going away anytime soon.
