EDD unemployment benefits for 40-hour union apprenticeship class? Need advice!
Hey everyone, I need some advice. I'm in a union apprenticeship program and I have to take a 40-hour class next week. The thing is, I'll miss work for the whole week because of it. I heard I might be able to get unemployment benefits for that week since I can't work. Has anyone gone through this before? What do I need to do to make sure I get those benefits? I've got a certificate of completion for the class, but I'm not sure if that's enough or what else I need to do.

Yeah, you should be able to get unemployment for that week. I went through something similar last year. Here's what you need to do: • Call the EDD and explain your situation • Have your certificate of completion ready • Ask them specifically about Training Extension (TE) benefits • Make sure to certify for that week when you do your regular certification • Keep any emails or documents from your union about the training It might take a little back and forth, but you're definitely eligible. Good luck!

•Thanks so much for the detailed info! I'll definitely follow these steps. Did you have any trouble getting through to someone at EDD when you called?

•Ugh, getting through to EDD can be a nightmare. It took me like 3 days of constant calling. But once I got someone, they were pretty helpful.

•Pro tip: call right when they open. You'll have a better chance of getting through before the lines get jammed up.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at EDD. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

•Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

•20 bucks? That's a rip-off. EDD should be accessible for free!

•I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo. And yeah, EDD should be more accessible, but until they fix their system, this is a solid workaround.

Ive been in the same boat, its a pain but you'll get through it. Just be patient and persistent with EDD. They'll eventually sort it out for you.

•Thanks for the encouragement. How long did the whole process take for you?

•It took about 3 weeks for everything to get sorted out. But I've heard it can vary. Just keep following up!

Quick question - is this a mandatory class for your apprenticeship? That might make a difference in how EDD views it.

•Yep, it's 100% required for the program. Good point though, I'll make sure to emphasize that when I talk to them.

Have you checked if your union has any resources to help with this? Sometimes they have people who can guide you through the process or even advocate on your behalf.

Ugh, I feel for you. The whole system is so broken. I had to jump through so many hoops just to get my regular unemployment. It's like they don't want us to get the benefits we're entitled to 🙄

Hey, just a heads up - make sure you're still certifying for that week even though you're in training. Some people forget and it can mess up your claim.
