EDD reporting issue: Stopped claiming benefits when I got hired - will this cause problems?

So I was collecting unemployment for about 3 months after getting laid off from my warehouse job. Then I got hired at a new company back in January 2025 (full-time with benefits!) and honestly just stopped certifying for benefits. I was so relieved to be working again that I completely forgot about EDD and never reported that I found work. It's been 4 months now and I'm worried this might come back to bite me. Do I need to go back and file those certifications showing I found work, or is it okay to just leave it since I'm not collecting benefits anymore? I'm worried they might think I was double-dipping or something even though I wasn't. Has anyone dealt with this before?

You should definitely go back and certify for those weeks when you stopped claiming. When you certify, you'll report your full-time employment and EDD will stop your benefits properly. It creates a clean end to your claim rather than it just hanging out there unresolved. The system expects a final certification showing you returned to work. Login to UI Online and see if you still have weeks available to certify.

Thanks for the advice. I just logged in and it shows I have 4 uncertified weeks from back when I first started my job. Should I just go ahead and certify for those weeks now? Will I get in trouble for waiting so long to do this?

THIS LITERALLY HAPPENED TO ME and EDD sent me a NOTICE OF OVERPAYMENT like 8 months later even though I never claimed any $$ after starting work!!! They said I failed to "officially close" my claim. Had to spend HOURS on phone explaining I didn't take any money I wasn't entitled to. TOTAL NIGHTMARE!!! Definitely go back and certify those weeks ASAP!!

omg that sounds awful! i just started a new job last week and didn't even think about this. gonna certify tonight!

When I got hired last year I just stopped certifying too lol. Nothing ever happened. I think as long as you didn't actually collect any money after you started working you're good. One less thing for the EDD to process anyway.

While you might not have had issues, this isn't actually the correct procedure. EDD expects claimants to report when they return to full-time work. Not properly closing a claim can potentially cause problems down the road, especially if the person needs to file for unemployment again in the future. Best practice is always to follow the proper procedures to avoid complications.

Im in kinda the same boat!! Got hired in December but only certified for the first week of that month when I was still unemployed. Haven't touched my EDD account since. Now I'm paranoid reading this thread lol

You should go back and complete those certifications. When you certify, you'll report your earnings and return to work, which properly closes your claim. This prevents potential issues later on. It only takes a few minutes to log in and complete those certifications, reporting your new job and earnings.

I had a similar situation when I got hired after being on unemployment. I was so frustrated trying to reach EDD to make sure everything was handled correctly. I found out about Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an EDD rep quickly - they helped me properly close my claim and I avoided any potential issues. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Definitely worth it to avoid the stress of wondering if you'll face problems later.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might try that if I run into issues certifying these old weeks. It's been stressing me out thinking I might get flagged for fraud or something even though I wasn't trying to do anything wrong.

To answer your follow-up question - yes, go ahead and certify for those uncertified weeks now. When you do, you'll enter your employment information and earnings for each week. This tells EDD you returned to work. You won't get in trouble for the delay - people sometimes forget to do this final step. What's important is that you didn't continue collecting benefits after starting work. Just make sure you accurately report your first day of work and earnings when you certify.

I just finished certifying for those weeks and reported my new job. The system shows my claim is now inactive. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help with this.

anyone know if this applies to part time work too? i just got a part time job but still eligible for some benefits

Different situation entirely. With part-time work, you need to continue certifying and report all earnings. EDD will calculate if you're eligible for partial benefits. Never stop certifying if you're working part-time and think you might still qualify for some benefits. Just report your hours and earnings accurately each certification period.
