EDD overpayment from 2021 affecting my new claim? Dashboard says 'check back to certify next week'

So I'm confused about my EDD claim status and hoping someone here can help me figure out what's going on. Back in 2021, I received an overpayment notification for about $4,200 from my previous claim (they said I reported my hours wrong for a couple weeks). I set up a payment plan but still have about $1,800 left to pay off. Fast forward to now - I got laid off from my IT support job last month and filed a new claim 2 weeks ago. My dashboard isn't showing any updated claim information or balance, but there's a message saying "check back after 03/12/2025 to certify for benefits." Does this mean my claim was actually approved despite the outstanding overpayment? I'm worried they're going to deny me because of the old overpayment issue. I tried calling but keep getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Will they just deduct what I owe from my new benefits?

yes that means your approved!! as long as it says to check back to certify your good. the old overpayment shouldnt matter as long as your on a payment plan. congrats!!

Oh really? That's a relief! I was stressing about this all weekend. So will my dashboard eventually update with the claim amount, or do I just wait until the certification date?

The message to certify next week is generally a good sign, but I wouldn't call it 100% approval yet. When you have an outstanding overpayment, EDD typically handles it in one of three ways: 1. They'll approve your new claim but reduce your weekly benefit amount to recover the overpayment 2. They might put a hold on your claim until you resolve the overpayment issue 3. They'll approve your claim normally if your overpayment was non-fraud and you're on a payment plan Since you're already on a payment plan, you're likely in scenario #1 or #3. The full claim details usually appear after your first certification goes through. You should be able to certify on 3/12 as indicated.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! That makes more sense. I'm fine with them reducing the amount to recoup what I owe - I just need something coming in while I job hunt. Should I keep trying to call them to confirm everything is okay, or just wait until the certification date?

I'd suggest waiting until your certification date before spending hours trying to call. If you certify and see no payment after 2-3 days, or if your certification status shows as "pending" for more than a week, then it would be worth trying to reach a representative.

NOOOO the other poster is WRONG!!!! Having an overpayment CAN absolutely affect your new claim!!! My brother had this EXACT situation and his new claim got STUCK in pending for TWO MONTHS because of an old overpayment!! The dashboard saying to certify doesnt mean ANYTHING - the system just automatically schedules certifications even if theres issues with your claim!!! You NEED to call EDD asap and make sure the overpayment isnt causing problems!!!!!

Oh no, now I'm worried again. Did your brother eventually get his claim approved? Was he on a payment plan too? I really can't afford to wait two months with no income.

He only got it fixed after FINALLY getting through to a tier 2 specialist who could override something in the system. The regular reps couldn't do anything! You NEED to talk to a specialist!

my cousin works at edd (not supposed to tell anyone lol) but she says the certify message usually means your claim is good to go but sometimes the computer just generates that message automatically. weird system tbh

I was in a similar situation last year with an overpayment from 2022. What's happening is your claim is likely approved, but they're setting up the system to apply an offset to your weekly benefits. In my case, they took 25% of each payment to go toward my outstanding balance. Don't worry too much about the dashboard not updating yet - that's normal. The system often doesn't show your claim balance until after your first certification processes. Just make sure you certify on the date they mentioned, and you should see your claim details update within 48-72 hours after certification. If you want to confirm everything, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to EDD. They have a service that helps you bypass the busy signals and actually speak to a real person. I was skeptical at first but their system worked - got through in about 20 minutes instead of spending days hitting redial. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Definitely worth it for peace of mind.

Thank you, this is really helpful! The 25% reduction sounds completely reasonable - I was worried they might withhold everything until the overpayment is settled. I'll look into Claimyr if I can't get through in the next few days.

yea thats what happen with me too they took like 22% of each payment until my overpayment was done. only took like 6 weeks to pay it all off

Based on my experience helping claimants with this issue, here's what's likely happening: 1. Your claim has been provisionally approved, which is why you're seeing the certification date. 2. If you're on a payment plan for the overpayment and have been making regular payments, EDD generally won't block a new claim. Instead, they'll establish an offset percentage (usually 25-30%) from each payment. 3. The dashboard not updating immediately is standard procedure. The claim balance and weekly benefit amount often don't appear until after your first certification processes. 4. Important: When you certify, make sure you report any income accurately to avoid creating a new overpayment situation. 5. Your previous overpayment will likely be flagged for review by a claims specialist, which could cause a brief delay in your first payment, but shouldn't prevent your claim from processing. I recommend proceeding with certification as instructed on 3/12. If your status stays pending for more than 7-10 days after certification, then it would be time to contact EDD directly.

This is extremely helpful, thank you! I've been making my payments consistently so hopefully that helps. I'll definitely be careful with reporting any income on my certifications - don't want to dig myself into another overpayment situation. I'll certify on 3/12 and see what happens.

Anyone know if the overpayment appeal deadline is still 30 days? I just got one too but mine is from pandemic benefits they say I wasn't eligible for...

Yes, you have 30 days from the date on your Notice of Determination to file an appeal. I recommend filing it immediately even if you don't have all your documentation ready - you can submit additional documents later. Make sure to be specific about why you believe the determination is incorrect.

Update: I tried calling today using the tips from this thread (calling right at 8:01am) and actually got through after 45 minutes on hold! The rep confirmed my claim IS approved and the message to certify next week is legitimate. They said they'll take 25% of each payment for the overpayment like many of you mentioned. They also said my claim balance and weekly benefit amount will show up after my first certification processes. Thanks everyone for the help!

great to hear! glad it worked out for you

That's excellent news! Make sure to set a calendar reminder for your certification date so you don't miss it. The sooner you certify, the sooner you'll receive your benefits.

Congrats on getting through and getting confirmation! That's such a relief. The 8:01am calling tip is gold - I've had success with that timing too. It's great that they were upfront about the 25% deduction, at least now you can budget accordingly. Thanks for updating the thread, this will definitely help other people in similar situations!

This is such helpful info! I'm in almost the exact same boat - laid off from my marketing job last week and have an old overpayment from 2020 that I'm still paying off. I was terrified they'd deny my new claim entirely. Your update gives me hope that I can get benefits even with the outstanding balance. Did they mention how long it typically takes for the first payment to hit your account after certification?
