EDD keeps scheduling phantom interviews while my claim is stuck pending since January
I'm at my wits end with EDD! My claim has been stuck in pending since January 2025 (over 4 months now). Every time I certify, the system shows my payments as pending, then randomly schedules phone interviews that turn out to be 'mistakes' according to the reps! This has happened THREE times already - including today after my latest certification. I've already gone through multiple waiting periods with zero payment. Meanwhile, I'm working a temp position that barely covers half my bills, and I'm literally spending 2-3 hours EVERY DAY trying to reach someone at EDD. When I finally get through, they just say 'it's a mistake' or 'the system glitch will clear soon' but nothing changes! Has anyone else dealt with these phantom interviews that keep delaying payment? Any advice for breaking this endless pending cycle?

The same thing happened to me back in February. EDD's system has a glitch that sometimes flags your account for interviews when you're working part-time. What fixed it for me was asking specifically for a 'claim review' rather than just asking about the pending status. When you call, don't just accept their 'it's a mistake' answer - ask them to submit a formal review ticket with their supervisor. Also, make sure you're reporting your temp work earnings exactly right on your certifications - even small inconsistencies can trigger these ghost interviews.

•Thank you! I'll definitely ask for a formal claim review next time. Quick question - when reporting my temp work hours, should I report the hours I actually worked each day or just the total for the week? I've been doing daily breakdowns but wondering if that's causing part of the problem.

•Right?! It feels like they're just throwing darts at a board to decide which claims to mess with each week. Have you found any way to get yours fixed?

EDD DOES THIS ON PURPOSE!!! They schedule fake interviews to delay payments and hope you'll just give up. It's their way of keeping money in their coffers longer. I had 5 fake interviews scheduled over 3 months before my payments finally started. The system is DESIGNED to frustrate you into giving up. And those temp jobs? They KNOW you're working temp because they can see your income reports, but they still make you jump through hoops. It's all a scam to avoid paying what they owe us taxpayers.

•While the frustration is totally understandable, EDD isn't actually doing this intentionally. These are legitimate system issues happening because their computer system is outdated and struggles with mixed income claims (part-time + unemployment). The best approach is to stay persistent while working through the proper channels to get it resolved.

After dealing with EDD for years, I've found that phantom interviews usually happen when there's a flag on your account that the regular reps can't see. You need to speak with a Tier 2 specialist who has fuller access to your claim details. Regular reps will just tell you "it's a mistake" because they literally can't see what's triggering the interviews. Here's what worked for me: 1. Call early morning (right when they open) 2. Specifically request a Tier 2 specialist - be polite but firm that you need someone who can see claim flags 3. When you get a Tier 2, ask them to check for "eligibility determination flags" - this is technical language they'll understand 4. Request they remove any pending interview requests if they're errors 5. Ask them to put notes on your account about the phantom interview issue It took me about 2 weeks after speaking with a Tier 2 for my pending payments to clear.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I had no idea there were Tier 2 specialists or that regular reps might not even be able to see the real problem. I'll try this approach tomorrow morning.

•I've triple-checked my certification answers, but maybe there's something subtle I'm missing. Which question did you answer wrong, if you don't mind sharing?

I was stuck in a similar situation earlier this year with constant pending payments and interview rescheduling. After weeks of failed attempts to reach someone helpful at EDD, I tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was a game-changer. Instead of spending hours redialing, their system got me connected to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes. The rep I spoke with was able to remove the phantom interview flags and release my pending payments. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km I was skeptical at first but desperate enough to try anything after wasting so many hours on hold just to get disconnected.

•I've never heard of this service before. Did you actually get connected to a higher-level rep who could fix the issue or just a regular frontline person?

•I got connected to a regular rep first who then transferred me to someone who could actually help. The main benefit was skipping the hours of busy signals and getting into the queue quickly. The rep I eventually spoke with identified the flag on my account and removed it. Worth trying if you're spending 2-3 hours daily trying to get through.

•That would be nice! At this point I'd take anything. The uncertainty is almost worse than just getting a straight denial.

When I certified yesterday I had the same thing happen! So weird that we're having identical issues on the same day. Makes me think they must be having system problems again. Did you happen to certify early in the morning? I wonder if it's related to their maintenance schedule?

Hey, just checking back - were you able to get through to a Tier 2 specialist? Sometimes it helps to mention specific keywords when you first get through to the general line. Try saying you need help with an "eligibility determination issue" rather than just saying your payments are pending. This often gets you to the right department faster.

•I've been trying all morning but still can't get through to anyone. I'll keep trying with those exact words about the eligibility determination issue. Thanks for checking back!

UPDATE: For those having this phantom interview issue, EDD just posted about a system update they did in April that's causing these problems for people with mixed income (partial work + UI benefits). They're supposedly fixing it this week. Check your UI Online account daily because they may not call when it's fixed - the pending payments might just suddenly process. If your payments don't clear by next week, definitely call and ask for a Tier 2 rep as I mentioned before and reference the "April system update issue" - they'll know what you're talking about.

•This is really helpful! Where did you see this announcement about the April system update? I've been checking my UI Online portal but didn't see any notifications about this.

•It was in the EDD Twitter feed and there's a small notice at the bottom of the UI Online login page (easy to miss). It only appears before you log in, not inside your account messages.
