EDD in-person office locations? Online errors and can't reach anyone by phone
I'm at my wits' end trying to help my husband with his unemployment claim! We've been trying for over two weeks now. The UI Online system keeps giving us an error message saying "unable to process your request at this time" whenever we try to complete his application. Then we tried calling literally EVERY number listed on the EDD website - we've called over 40 times in the past week alone and either get the "we're experiencing high call volume" message or it disconnects us after being on hold for an hour! Are there any actual physical EDD offices we can go to in person? We're in the San Bernardino area but willing to drive pretty much anywhere in Southern California at this point. His former employer (construction company) laid off 30 people last month and he needs to get this claim started ASAP. Our savings is getting really low and rent is due next week. Has anyone successfully visited an EDD office in person lately? Or found any secret way to get through on the phones? This is getting ridiculous!

Sadly EDD doesn't have unemployment offices that handle UI claims anymore. They closed those down years ago. There are "America's Job Centers" but they just help with job search not actual claims.

•Really?? That's so frustrating. How is everyone supposed to get help when the website doesn't work and no one answers the phone??

•Thank you! I'll try the middle-of-the-night approach tonight. Do you remember which browser worked best? We've been using Chrome.

There are no physical unemployment offices anymore where you can file or manage claims in person. The America's Job Centers (AJCC) that someone mentioned can help with job searching and sometimes basic UI questions, but they can't process claims or fix technical issues. For the technical error you're getting, try these steps: 1. Use a different browser (Firefox or Edge often work better than Chrome) 2. Clear cache and cookies 3. Try during off-hours (early morning 6-7am or late evening after 10pm) 4. Make sure you're completing all required fields 5. If using autofill, turn it off as it sometimes causes validation errors For the phone issues, unfortunately the regular EDD numbers are notoriously difficult to get through. Your husband should focus on completing the online application first if possible, as that's the quickest path to getting benefits started.

•Thank you for these detailed tips! We'll definitely try the browser switch and off-hours approach. I didn't realize the autofill might be causing problems - we've been using that so maybe that's part of the issue.

I went through this NIGHTMARE 2 months ago when I got laid off. Spent DAYS trying to reach someone at EDD. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr - it's a service that connects you with an EDD rep by basically navigating their phone system for you. Costs money but it was worth it to me after wasting so many hours. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Once I got through to an actual person, they fixed my online account issues in about 10 minutes. Might be worth it if you're still stuck after trying the other suggestions.

•Thank you for suggesting this! If we still can't get through after trying the off-hours website access, we'll definitely look into this service. At this point, it would be worth it just to get this resolved.

THE EDD IS A COMPLETE DISASTER!!!!! I spent THREE MONTHS trying to get my claim processed last year. The website is broken, the phone lines are a joke, and they expect people to just magically figure out their ridiculous system! It's like they WANT people to fail. The truth is they DON'T WANT TO HELP YOU. They make everything difficult ON PURPOSE to discourage claims. My cousin works for the state (not EDD) and she says they're massively understaffed and the higher-ups know the system is broken but won't fix it. My advice? Call your state assembly member's office. That's what finally worked for me. Their office has special contacts at EDD and can escalate your case. Google "[your city] state assembly member" and call their constituent services.

•I hadn't thought about contacting our assembly member! That's a great idea. I'll look up their info right now. And yeah, it really does feel like the system is designed to be as frustrating as possible.

•This is actually good advice. Assembly members and state senators have liaisons that can help with EDD issues.

I'm an employment counselor who works with UI claimants regularly. Let me provide some accurate information: 1. There are no physical UI offices anymore that handle claim processing. This was phased out years ago in favor of the phone/online system. 2. The America's Job Centers (AJCCs) can provide job search assistance, resume help, and sometimes basic guidance, but they cannot access or modify UI claims directly. 3. For technical issues with UI Online, try using a different device, browser, and clearing your cache/cookies. The website performs best during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening). 4. For phone issues, the best times to call are Tuesday-Thursday between 8:00-8:30am right when they open or between 4:00-4:30pm. 5. If your husband was part of a mass layoff (30 people), ask him to check if the employer filed a WARN notice with the state. Sometimes EDD provides special assistance for large layoffs. 6. Contact your local state assembly member as someone mentioned - this is often the fastest way to get assistance with stuck claims. I hope this helps clarify your options. Focus on the online application during off-hours first, then try the assembly member route if that doesn't work.

•Thank you so much for this detailed information! This is incredibly helpful. I didn't know about the WARN notice - I'll definitely ask my husband to check with his former coworkers about that. We'll try the website during off-hours tonight and also reach out to our assembly member tomorrow. Seriously appreciate your expertise!

when i had all the website errors it turned out i was entering my SSN wrong (i typed a 6 instead of a 0) and it kept giving me that generic error message instead of telling me what was wrong. double check all the info ur entering!

•Oh that's a good point! We'll definitely double-check all the information. The error messages are so vague it's hard to know what's actually wrong.

•For certification errors specifically, try using the UI Mobile site or TeleCert (the phone certification system). Sometimes when one method isn't working, the others will work fine. The TeleCert number is 1-866-333-4606.

Has your husband created a separate UI Online account, or are you trying to use one account for both of you? Each person needs their own separate account even if you're married. I made this mistake at first and kept getting errors until I realized what was happening. Also, if you're getting the "unable to process your request" error, check to make sure he's not already in the system from a previous claim. My husband had this issue because he filed a claim 5 years ago and was trying to create a new account instead of recovering his old one.

•He did create his own account, but the previous claim possibility is interesting. He did receive unemployment about 4 years ago when he was between projects. I wonder if that's causing the issue. Do you know how he recovered his old account? We might need to try that approach.

•He had to use the "Forgot Password" option with his SSN and then answer his security questions. If he doesn't remember his security questions, that's when you definitely need to talk to a live person at EDD. This is exactly the situation where that Claimyr service helped us get through to someone who could verify his identity and reset everything.
