EDD eligibility interview rejected my pay stubs - what other proof do they need?

I'm beyond frustrated right now. Had my eligibility phone interview with EDD yesterday because they flagged my application for 'providing false information' (which I absolutely did NOT do). The interviewer asked for employment verification from January 8, 2025 onward, and I had all my pay stubs ready. I gave her every single detail from those stubs, but she just said 'that's not sufficient evidence' without explaining why or what else I needed to provide! Now I'm panicking that my claim will be denied. Has anyone dealt with this before? What other documents could they possibly want if pay stubs aren't enough? I worked in retail for 2 years before being laid off, all completely legitimate with taxes taken out.

they did the same thing to me last month! so annoying. the lady on the phone told me pay stubs weren't enough because they need to see QUARTERLY wages reported by employer. something about employer contributions not matching my reported earnings? idk it was confusing

Quarterly wages? Nobody mentioned anything about that during my interview. Did they end up approving your claim or did you have to submit something else?

When EDD says your pay stubs aren't enough, it typically means they need to verify your wages against what your employer reported to the state. This happens in three common scenarios: 1. Your employer hasn't reported your wages to EDD for those quarters 2. The amounts you're claiming don't match what your employer reported 3. They need additional documentation to confirm your employment separation reason You should gather: W-2 forms, employment contract, termination letter (if you have one), and any communication about your layoff. Call EDD back and specifically ask what documentation they need - don't hang up until you get a clear answer.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. I definitely have my W-2 from last year and emails about the layoff. I'll try calling them tomorrow to clarify exactly what they need.

THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!!! EDD auditors are trained to find ANY reason to deny your claim. When they say "that's not enough" without telling you what IS enough, they're setting you up to fail. I had FIVE interviews before my claim was approved because they kept saying my documentation "wasn't sufficient" without telling me what would be. The system is DESIGNED to make you give up!!!

If you're having trouble reaching EDD to clarify what documents they need, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. When I was in a similar situation with my eligibility interview follow-up, I couldn't get through for days. A friend suggested Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it connected me with an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. The rep I spoke with clearly explained that I needed to provide my termination notice along with pay stubs to verify my reason for separation, which made all the difference.

does this actually work? i keep getting that stupid "we're experiencing high call volume" message and then it hangs up on me

In my experience, when pay stubs aren't enough, it's usually because they want to verify your separation reason. For retail positions, they're particularly careful about distinguishing between being fired vs. laid off, as it affects eligibility. Do you have a termination letter or any written communication about your layoff? Those are gold for EDD verification. Also, sometimes the wage verification issue happens when there's a discrepancy between what you reported and what your employer reported to the state for tax purposes.

I do have an email from my manager explaining the store closure and layoffs. I didn't think to mention that during the interview since she only asked about pay stubs. I'll definitely have that ready for my follow-up call.

hey has anyone had their interview rescheduled like 3 times?? mines been postponed twice now and im getting really nervous about it

That's a separate issue, but yes, rescheduling happens frequently due to staff shortages. It shouldn't affect your claim outcome, though it does delay your payments. If you've been rescheduled multiple times, make sure to document each instance.

I think I had the same issue. My pay stubs weren't enough cuz they were looking for something showing my last day worked. Did they specifically ask about your termination reason? Sometimes they dont tell u what they're really looking for and expect you to just know lol

They didn't specifically ask about termination! Just requested dates and payment info from the pay stubs. That's what was so confusing - if they needed something else, why not just say so??

Just to follow up - your next steps should be: 1. Call EDD and specifically ask what documentation they require (use the exact phrase "what documentation is required to complete my eligibility verification") 2. Prepare a documentation package with: pay stubs, W-2, termination notice/email, final paycheck stub, and contact information for your former supervisor 3. Ask how to submit these documents (usually through UI Online under "Upload Documents") 4. After submitting, call back to confirm receipt and ask if anything else is needed The key is being persistent and specific in your questions. Don't end any conversation without clarity on next steps.

This is excellent advice. I'd add that sending documents through UI Online creates a timestamp record, which is important if there are any disputes about whether you provided information on time.

did u check ur ui online account? sometimes they put notes or message u there about what specific docs they need. i totally missed mine for like 2 weeks lol

Just checked and there's nothing there! No messages or notifications about additional documents needed. That would've been too easy I guess 🙄

Another RIDICULOUS thing they do is verify with your employer, who has a FINANCIAL INCENTIVE to deny your claim! If your employer says anything that doesn't perfectly match your statement, EDD will side with them. Make sure every date and dollar amount you provide EXACTLY matches your documentation!

That's a really good point. I should double-check all the dates I gave during the interview against my actual pay stubs to make sure I didn't accidentally say something wrong.
