EDD certification question - reporting one sick day with doctor's note when certifying for benefits

I'm really confused about how to handle my certification this week. I had to call out sick on Wednesday (had a terrible migraine) and got a doctor's note. My company paid me for 8 sick hours that day. When I'm certifying for unemployment benefits, do I need to answer "YES" to the question about being too sick or injured to work? Or should I just report the sick hours I got paid for? I'm worried about checking YES because I don't want my entire payment to be delayed or have my claim flagged for just one day of being sick. Anyone know the correct way to handle this so I don't mess up my benefits?

jst report the hours u were paid for that day. dont mark yes on the sick question unless u were unable to work the WHOLE week. one day wont matter

Are you sure? I'm really paranoid about making a mistake on these forms. I definitely was able to work the rest of the week, just not Wednesday.

This is a common question. When certifying, you should answer "Yes" to the question about being too sick or injured to work if you were unable to work on any day during the certification period. Then on the next screen, you'll be asked which days - just indicate Wednesday. Also, make sure to report the sick pay you received for that day when asked about any income. Since your employer paid you sick time for Wednesday, report those 8 hours of pay in the section asking about income received during the certification period. Doing this correctly shouldn't cause any payment delay as long as you provide all the information accurately. It's a routine situation that EDD processes all the time.

I had the SAME thing happen to me last month!! I answered yes to the sick question and my payment was delayed for like 10 days while they "reviewed" it. Super annoying. EDD makes everything complicated.

The previous advice is WRONG!! I'm sorry but marking YES to being sick will 100% trigger a review of your claim!!! They might think you're not able to work at all and put your claim on hold while they investigate. Just report the hours you got PAID for that day and leave the sick question as NO. One day doesn't make you unable to work for certification purposes. The system is designed to catch people who are completely unable to work due to illness, not someone with a one-day migraine!

I agree with this. When I had food poisoning for 2 days last year I just reported the hours I got paid from my PTO and didn't check the sick box. Payment came through normal schedule with no issues. The EDD system isn't sophisticated enough to handle nuances.

Let me clarify this since there's some confusion. According to EDD guidelines, you should technically answer "Yes" to being too sick to work if you were unable to work on any day during the certification period. However, you're right to be concerned about delays. Here's what I recommend: 1. Answer "Yes" to the question about being sick/injured 2. Indicate it was only for one day when prompted 3. Report the sick pay you received 4. In the comment section (if available), briefly explain you had a one-day illness with doctor's note and were able to work all other days If you're really worried about delays and need your payment quickly, you might want to try calling EDD directly to confirm. I know getting through to them is nearly impossible though.

If anyone needs to actually reach EDD by phone, I used Claimyr.com last week and got through in 20 minutes after trying for days on my own. They connect you directly to an EDD rep who can answer these specific certification questions. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Worth it for peace of mind rather than guessing and potentially having your benefits delayed.

kinda off topic but this reminds me of when i got the flu back in January and missed 3 days of work. i marked YES on the sick question and my payment got stuck for almost 3 weeks!!! had to call EDD like 45 times to finally get someone who fixed it. the whole system is designed to make us fail i swear

This happens ALL THE TIME. EDD's system seems deliberately complicated. My cousin works in HR and says even they struggle with explaining the rules to employees sometimes.

After reading all the comments, I want to provide some clarification. The official guidance from EDD is to answer truthfully - if you were sick and unable to work any day during the week, technically you should answer "Yes." However, I understand the practical concerns about payment delays. If you do answer "Yes," make sure to: 1. Only indicate the specific day you were sick (Wednesday) 2. Report the sick pay correctly as income 3. Be ready to provide your doctor's note if requested One day of illness with proper documentation shouldn't disqualify you from benefits for the entire week, though it might reduce your benefit amount for that specific day. The system is designed to accommodate temporary illness. If you've already certified and are worried, check your UI Online account for any notifications or requests for additional information.

Thank you everyone for your advice! I decided to go with the technically correct approach - marked "Yes" for being sick, specified it was just Wednesday, and reported my sick pay. I'll update here if I have any payment delays. This was really helpful!
