EDD calculated my benefit amount overnight - seems way too low based on my high quarter earnings

I submitted my unemployment claim yesterday around 5pm and checked my UI Online account this morning - it's already showing my weekly benefit amount and benefit year! I'm shocked at how fast they processed it, but I'm also confused about the amount they calculated. The weekly benefit they're giving me seems WAY too low considering my highest quarter earnings from last year. I was making about $1,200/week at my tech job before the layoff, but my benefit amount is showing only $340/week? Does anyone know if the initial calculation is just automated and they'll review it more thoroughly later? Or is this amount likely final? I definitely want to appeal if this is wrong, but I'm wondering if I should wait a few days before calling. The whole process seems suspiciously fast - like maybe it's just a computer system auto-calculating without human review? Has anyone successfully gotten their benefit amount reconsidered? I kept good records of all my earnings if I need to dispute this.

The initial benefit calculation is indeed automated based on wage information your employer(s) reported to EDD. Your weekly benefit amount is determined by your highest quarter earnings in your base period, and there's a specific formula they use. If you earned $1,200/week consistently, your quarterly earnings would be around $15,600, which should qualify you for more than $340/week. It's possible your employer reported different wage information than what you're expecting. I'd recommend requesting a wage investigation. You'll need to provide proof of your earnings (W-2, paystubs, etc.) that contradict what EDD has on record. Don't wait - call them ASAP to start this process, as benefit recalculations can take time to process.

Thanks for explaining! That makes sense. I was contracting for part of last year, then became a full employee. I wonder if that's causing the discrepancy. I'll definitely call tomorrow with my documentation ready.

Oh that's good to hear they'll backpay the difference! Did you have to send in any documentation or just explain it over the phone?

The EDD system is COMPLETELY broken. I spent TWO MONTHS trying to get my benefit amount fixed last year. They kept saying my highest quarter was only $8k when I made over $24k that quarter. I had to call EVERY SINGLE DAY for weeks, only to be told they couldn't help me or the queue was full. When I finally got through, the rep told me my employer had misreported my wages. They had me fax (yes, FAX in 2025!!!) my paystubs and W-2, then made me wait ANOTHER 3 weeks for processing. The whole system is designed to frustrate you into giving up!!

While the system definitely has issues, most wage investigations are actually resolved within 2-3 weeks if you provide clear documentation. The key is getting through to the right department - not just any EDD representative can help with wage investigations. You need to specifically ask for the Claims Processing department or someone who can handle wage discrepancies. Also, they now accept electronic document uploads through UI Online rather than requiring faxes for most situations.

I've been trying to reach EDD for three days about my benefit amount calculation and keep hitting dead ends with the phone system. Finally tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) yesterday after another Reddit user suggested it, and they actually got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. The rep was able to start my wage investigation right away after I explained the discrepancy. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Saved me so much frustration after days of failed calling.

did u check if they used standard base period or alternative base period? sometimes they use older quarters if ur using standard which could b y ur amount is low. they shud tell u which quarters they used somewhere in ur paperwork or online account

I didn't know there were different base periods! I'll check my account again to see if it mentions which one they used. Thanks for the tip.

Great point. The Standard Base Period uses your earnings from months 2-14 before you filed (ignoring the most recent completed quarter). The Alternative Base Period uses more recent quarters, including months 2-13. If you had higher earnings in your most recent quarters, requesting they use the Alternative Base Period could increase your benefit amount.

To directly answer your questions: 1) Yes, the initial benefit calculation is automated based on quarterly wage data in their system 2) No, it doesn't typically change unless you request a wage investigation 3) Your weekly benefit amount (WBA) is calculated as approximately 1/23rd to 1/26th of your highest quarter earnings, up to the maximum benefit of $550/week in 2025 If your highest quarter earnings were truly $15,600 (assuming $1,200/week for 13 weeks), your WBA should be around $450-$500, not $340. Possible issues: - Only some of your wages were reported by your employer - Your wages were reported under an incorrect SSN - You worked for multiple employers and not all were included - They're using quarters where you earned less Call EDD immediately and request a "wage investigation" - be prepared with your paystubs from the past 18 months. Also check your "Claim History" section on UI Online to see which quarters they used to calculate your benefit.

This is incredibly helpful - thank you! I just checked my UI Online claim history and now I see the issue. They're using Q3-Q4 2023 and Q1-Q2 2024, but my highest earnings were in Q3-Q4 2024 when I got promoted. No wonder the calculation is off. I'll definitely request a wage investigation first thing tomorrow.

wait are you certifying while this gets sorted out? you should keep certifying every 2 weeks even if the amount is wrong

I didn't even think about that! I was so focused on the wrong amount. Thanks for the reminder - I'll make sure to certify on schedule regardless of this issue.

And while you're waiting for them to fix it MAKE SURE you keep detailed records of EVERY conversation you have with EDD! I didn't do this and ended up having to restart my entire wage investigation because the rep I spoke with didn't properly note my account. Write down the date, time, rep name/ID number, and what they told you EVERY SINGLE TIME. Their system is designed to lose your information!!

This is excellent advice. I'd also recommend following up any phone conversations with an email summary through your UI Online account messaging center. This creates a written record in their system that can be referenced if there are any disputes later. Always include the date and time of your call, the name of the representative you spoke with, and a brief summary of what was discussed and what actions were promised.

That's unfortunate, but I understand the frustration. For anyone reading this thread: don't give up on your correct benefit amount! The difference between a properly calculated benefit and an incorrect one could be thousands of dollars over your claim period. It's worth the effort even if it seems overwhelming.
