EDD asking about work during school breaks for SDI claim after having a baby - what to expect?

I just had a baby and applied for disability. Now EDD is asking me to contact them about some questions they have about my work. They want me to discuss my school break periods and whether I would have been scheduled to work during the breaks if not for my disability. Has anyone else dealt with this? What should I expect when I talk to them? I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with a newborn and now this.

Congrats on the baby! šŸŽ‰ I went through something similar last year. Here's what you need to prepare: • Write down all your school break periods • Note any work you were scheduled for during those times • Gather any documents that show your normal work schedule • Be ready to explain how your disability affected your ability to work When you talk to them, be clear and concise. They're just trying to determine if you would have been working during those periods if not for your disability. Good luck!

Thank you so much! This is really helpful. Do you remember how long the call took? I'm trying to plan around the baby's schedule.

My call was about 30 minutes, but it can vary. Try to have someone watch the baby if possible. These calls can be unpredictable!

Pro tip: I found a way to get through to someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site called claimyr.com. It's a calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

I get it, but honestly, it was worth every penny for me. Time is money, especially with a new baby!

Quick question - are you on SDI or PFL? The rules can be slightly different.

Been there, done that. My advice? Document EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every email. You never know when you'll need to reference something. And don't be afraid to ask for clarification if you don't understand something. It's your money, after all!

That's great advice, thank you! I'll start a log right away.

Hey OP, congrats on the little one! šŸ‘¶ Quick question - are you a teacher or do you work in education? The school break thing makes me think you might be. If so, there are some specific rules that might apply to you.

0 coins

Yes, I'm actually a part-time college instructor. Do you know what specific rules I should be aware of?

0 coins

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, for educators, they often look at whether you have "reasonable assurance" of returning to work after the break. If you do, you might not be eligible for benefits during scheduled breaks. But with your disability, it might be different. Def bring this up in your call!
