EDD appeal sent to Buena Park - No response after 9 weeks
I submitted my appeal paperwork to the Buena Park office after getting disqualified for allegedly "not being available for work" (which is total BS - I had ONE interview I couldn't make because my car broke down). That was 9 weeks ago and I haven't heard a single thing from them. Not even an acknowledgment that they received my appeal! My UI Online account still just shows "Disqualified" for those weeks. I'm in Riverside County and I've tried calling the appeal board number at least 15 times but either get disconnected or told the queue is full. Has anyone else from the Inland Empire had their appeals sent to Buena Park? How long did you wait before hearing anything? My savings are almost completely gone and I'm starting to panic.

•11 weeks just to get a HEARING DATE?! Ugh that's so discouraging. Did they at least send you some kind of confirmation that they received your appeal during that time? I'm worried mine got lost in the system.

Mine took about 8 weeks before I got anything in the mail. The system is completely overwhelmed right now. Make sure you keep certifying for benefits even though they'll show as disqualified - if you win your appeal, they'll pay all those weeks retroactively. Also, don't lose hope about the 'not available for work' issue. I won my appeal with a similar situation (missed an interview due to a family emergency). Just make sure you have documentation about your car breaking down to show at the hearing.

•Thanks for the tip about continuing to certify! I've been doing that but wasn't sure if it mattered. I have the tow truck receipt and mechanic invoice from that day, so hopefully that's enough proof. Did you have your hearing in person or over the phone? Did you have to wait long after the hearing to get a decision?

•My hearing was over the phone and it lasted about 30 minutes. The judge asked specific questions about my work search efforts and why I missed the interview. I got the decision in the mail about 10 days later. Those documents you have should be perfect - make sure to submit them ahead of time when they give you the hearing details. Good luck!

the EXACT same thing happened to my cousin!!! disqualified for missing ONE interview because her babysitter cancelled last minute. took her almost 3 months to even get her appeal scheduled. EDD is so unfair to people, like we're supposed to be perfect robots or something??? one tiny mistake and they cut off your money instantly!!!!

•Did your cousin eventually win her appeal? I'm dealing with a similar situation but mine was because I had a medical appointment that I couldn't reschedule. I'm worried they're just automatically denying people for any reason they can find.

I had a similar experience with an appeal to the Buena Park office last year. The entire appeals process is taking anywhere from 8-12 weeks just to get scheduled right now, which is well beyond their own stated timeframes. Here's what I recommend: 1. Call the Appeals Board directly (not regular EDD) at 800-300-5616 early in the morning (7:59am exactly) 2. Submit a duplicate appeal through UI Online AND by fax if possible (yes, I know it's 2025 but EDD still uses fax) 3. You might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it helped me actually get through to someone after weeks of failed calls. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows how it works. I was skeptical but it got me connected to an actual human who could check the status of my appeal. 4. Contact your state assembly member's office - they often have direct lines to EDD staff and can help get information about stalled appeals. The good news is that appeals for "availability for work" issues have a pretty high success rate when it's a one-time incident with documentation.

•Thank you so much for these detailed suggestions! I didn't even think about contacting my assembly member - that's a great idea. I'll check out Claimyr too because I'm so frustrated with not being able to reach anyone. Did you win your appeal in the end?

•Yes, I did win my appeal. The judge was actually very reasonable. One thing I forgot to mention - make sure to keep detailed records of all your job search activities between now and your hearing. They may ask about that to establish you've been available for work despite that one incident.

•This comment isn't helpful at all. Missing one interview due to car trouble doesn't mean someone isn't trying. The whole point of the appeals process is to address these kinds of situations. OP has said they're actively looking for work.

I work as an employment counselor and see these cases all the time. The Buena Park office is particularly backlogged right now. A few things to know: 1. The "available for work" disqualification is one of the most commonly appealed and overturned decisions. A single missed interview with documentation of why is very likely to be reversed. 2. Appeals are currently being processed in chronological order, and they should acknowledge receipt within 30 days (though they're running behind). 3. Current appeal timeline in Southern California is approximately 9-12 weeks before hearing scheduling. 4. For the Inland Empire specifically, appeals often take an extra 1-2 weeks as they're processed through multiple offices. I recommend sending a follow-up letter (certified mail) referencing your initial appeal date. Also, continue certifying for benefits weekly and maintain detailed records of all job search activities. These will be crucial for your hearing.

•Thanks for this insider perspective! I'll definitely send a follow-up certified letter. Do you know if there's any way to check if they've received my appeal besides calling? I've been keeping a job search log but wasn't including much detail - I'll start being more thorough.

•Unfortunately, there's no online tracking system for appeals. Your best bet is certified mail for the follow-up and continuing to try to reach them by phone. For your job search log, make sure to include company names, position titles, application dates, any contact person names, and follow-up actions. These details will significantly strengthen your case.

I waited THREE AND A HALF MONTHS for my appeal hearing!!! And I only got it that "fast" because I finally broke down and contacted my state senator's office. The EDD system is COMPLETELY BROKEN. They disqualify people for ridiculous reasons, then make us wait forever without income while they get around to fixing their mistakes. I was also dealing with the Buena Park office and it was a nightmare. I nearly lost my apartment while waiting. AND THEN after winning my appeal, it took ANOTHER month for them to actually process the payments for all those back weeks! The whole system is designed to make people give up!!!!

•Oh my god, that's terrifying. I don't think I can make it 3.5 months without this money. Did contacting your senator actually help speed things up? I'm wondering if I should do that right away rather than waiting.

•YES! Contact your local representative IMMEDIATELY. Don't wait. They have special EDD liaisons who can check on your case. It won't get you an instant hearing, but it might knock a month off your wait time. At minimum, you'll get confirmation that your appeal is in the system.

Just tried using Claimyr today that someone mentioned earlier in this thread, and I actually got through to EDD in about 20 minutes after trying for weeks on my own! The rep confirmed my appeal was received and is in the queue for scheduling. Worth every penny just for the peace of mind. Thought I'd report back since I was in a similar situation (appeal sent to Buena Park, no confirmation).

•That's amazing to hear! I was hesitant about trying a paid service, but at this point I just need answers. Knowing my appeal is at least in their system would be a huge relief. Thanks for sharing your experience with it.
