EDD Money Network settlement check - just got $780 from 2020 account lockdown
Hey everyone, just wanted to share some unexpected good news! I checked my mail yesterday and found a check for $780 from Money Network related to my EDD card that was locked back in December 2020. Apparently there was some kind of settlement for people who experienced hardship during the account freezes when they were investigating fraud. I remember being completely panicked when my card suddenly got locked - had rent due and literally couldn't access any of my unemployment funds for almost 3 weeks while they "verified" my identity. Never got any explanation or apology after they unlocked it.\n\nAnyone else get one of these settlement checks? The letter mentions something about a class action suit that was settled. I honestly had forgotten all about that nightmare until this check showed up. If you had your Money Network/BofA EDD card locked during that period, you might want to make sure they have your current address on file!

OMG I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM!!! My card was frozen for like a MONTH in November 2020 and I literally couldn't buy food. They never even apologized. How do I check if I'm getting a check too?? Did they send it to your current address or an old one? I've moved twice since then.

They sent it to my current address, which is weird because I never updated it with them after I stopped getting benefits. Maybe they accessed address records from somewhere else? The letter didn't really explain how to check if you're eligible - it just showed up. There was a website listed though... let me find the letter and I'll post it.

It's definitely legit. The letter has all the official Bank of America and Money Network logos, references my specific claim from 2020, and the check cleared already. I wouldn't have posted about it if I thought it was suspicious.

This is related to the Berton v. Bank of America class action settlement that was finalized in January 2025. If you had your EDD debit card frozen between October 2020 and March 2021 during their fraud investigation sweeps, you may be eligible for compensation. The settlement amount varies based on how long your account was locked and what documented hardships you faced.\n\nThere should be a settlement website listed on your notice where others can check their eligibility. The deadline to file a claim was back in November 2024, but if you were automatically identified as affected (which sounds like the case for OP), you'll receive payment without having to take action.\n\nThe settlement administrator is required to make reasonable attempts to locate affected individuals, which is likely why they found your current address.

If you're having trouble reaching EDD to ask about this settlement, try using Claimyr. It helped me get through when I was dealing with a similar issue last month about backpay. They get you past the busy signals and connect you directly to an agent. Saved me days of frustrated calling. There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km and the website is claimyr.com

Thanks for the tip! Have you used it yourself? Does it actually work? EDD is impossible to get through to.

I'm curious - what was the exact name on the check? I think I may have received something similar last week but assumed it was some kind of scam and set it aside to investigate later. Was it from \

The EDD phone representatives won't have information about this because it's a class action settlement against Bank of America/Money Network, not against EDD itself. You need to contact the settlement administrator directly. \n\nLook up \

That's awesome news! Glad you're getting something too. It doesn't make up for all the stress we went through, but it's something at least.

does anyone know if this applies to PUA claims too or just regular UI?

Yes, this applies to any EDD benefits that were paid via Bank of America debit cards, including regular UI, PUA, PEUC, FED-ED, or any other program that used the Money Network cards. The settlement is based on card freezes, not on the type of claim you had.\n\nIf your card was frozen during the class period (October 2020 through March 2021) as part of their fraud investigation, and you experienced financial hardship as a result, you should be eligible for some compensation.

Interesting timing on this. I've been trying for weeks to get information about my 2025 claim that suddenly went from paid to disqualification without explanation. Can't get through on the phone lines at all. Called 36 times yesterday alone.\n\nI wonder if there will eventually be another class action about the current EDD issues. The system seems just as broken now as it was during the pandemic, just in different ways. At least back then they had the excuse of being overwhelmed with claims.

I had the exact same problem last month with a sudden disqualification. After days of failed calling, I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through. The service bypasses the busy signals and got me connected with an EDD rep in about 45 minutes. The video demo shows exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km\n\nTurned out my disqualification was due to a system error where my identity verification didn't properly transfer from ID.me to their system. The rep fixed it on the spot and my payments resumed the next day.

Thank you for the recommendation. At this point, I'm willing to try anything. The frustration of calling dozens of times per day and never getting through is almost worse than the financial stress. I'll check out that service.

Wow, this is incredible news! I had my EDD card frozen for almost 6 weeks starting in late December 2020. I remember it was right after Christmas and I couldn't even buy groceries for my kids. Had to borrow money from family just to survive while they "investigated" my account for supposed fraud that never existed. I never heard anything about a class action lawsuit or settlement. Does anyone know if there's a way to check if you're eligible even if you didn't file a claim? I've moved since then but I'm hoping they can still find me. That freeze period was one of the most stressful times of my life - having money that was rightfully mine just completely inaccessible while bills kept piling up. Thanks for sharing this @Collins Angel - gives me hope that maybe there's some justice for what we all went through during that nightmare period!
