Can't apply for EDD benefits online - site keeps crashing, need alternatives

I've been trying to file for unemployment online for the past 3 days and I'm about to lose my mind! Every time I get to the personal information section, the UI Online site either freezes or kicks me out completely. I've tried different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, even Edge) and even borrowed my sister's laptop, but same problem. The automated phone system just tells me to go online! I lost my job at the restaurant where I was working for 2 years when they suddenly closed last week. I really need to get this claim started. Has anyone else had trouble with the website? Is there any way to actually speak to a human being at EDD to file my claim? I'm getting desperate here...

The EDD website has been super glitchy since they did that system update in January. Try applying between 10pm-6am when there's less traffic on the site. That worked for me. Also, make sure you're not using autofill - I found that was causing crashes on the identity verification pages. If all else fails, you can request a paper application by calling 1-800-300-5616, but good luck getting through!

Thanks for the tips! I'll try late tonight. I actually didn't know about the autofill issue - I've been using that so maybe that's part of the problem. Did you have to wait long once you got your application submitted?

50 times?! Ugh, that's what I was afraid of. Did you just keep hitting redial or is there a better time to call?

I was in the EXACT same situation last month when my seasonal construction job ended. The website kept giving me Error Code ED-401 every time I tried to create an account. So frustrating!! What finally worked for me was using Claimyr to get through to an actual EDD representative who took my claim over the phone. It saved me days of frustration - you can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. The rep told me they've been having major issues with the online application system for new claims specifically. Once I got through, the agent was actually super helpful and set everything up in about 20 minutes.

The EDD system is DELIBERATELY designed to be difficult to access!! They hope you'll give up so they don't have to pay your benefits. I worked as a claims adjuster for 11 years and the internal motto was literally "delay, deny, defend" - they're trained to make it hard!! Their IT infrastructure is from the STONE AGE and they refuse to upgrade because it keeps claim numbers down. Taxpayer money at work, folks!!!! 😡😡😡

Wow that's messed up if true. My friend works at EDD and says it's just that they're understaffed and the systems are old, not some conspiracy.

Hi there! I work with a community nonprofit that helps people apply for benefits, and we're seeing this issue a lot lately. Here are some verified solutions: 1) The UI Online system maintenance window is officially 8pm-1am on Fridays, but they often do unannounced maintenance other nights. Try weekday mornings (7-9am) when the system is freshest. 2) If you use any type of VPN or ad blocker, disable it completely for the EDD site. 3) Clear your cache and cookies before starting the application. 4) If the website still doesn't work, you can request a paper DE 1101I form by mail by calling 1-800-300-5616. 5) For fastest service, go in person to an EDD office or America's Job Center location. They can help you file in person. Find your nearest location here: https://edd.ca.gov/en/office_locator Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for this detailed info! I didn't even think about going to an office in person. There's one about 20 miles from me - do you know if I need an appointment or can I just walk in? Also, what documents should I bring with me?

didnt you try just using your phone instead of computer? the mobile site worked for me when the regular site kept crashing

I actually did try my phone but got stuck on the identity verification part - it kept saying I needed to use a desktop browser for that section. Maybe I'll try again and see if I can get further this time.

The EDD website was giving me fits too because I have a hyphenated last name. Keep in mind that once you do get your application submitted, it might take 2-3 weeks to process. Make sure you certify on time even if your claim is pending! I made that mistake and lost a week of benefits because I thought I had to wait for approval first.

This is really important advice! Always certify on time even if your claim is still pending. You won't get paid for weeks you don't certify for, even if you're ultimately approved.

UPDATE: I finally got through! I took the advice about trying late at night (went online at 11:30pm) and turned off all my browser extensions. The site was actually much faster and I was able to complete my entire application! Now it says my claim is processing and I should receive something in the mail within 10 days. Thanks everyone for your help - this community is amazing!

Great news! Make sure to set a reminder to certify for benefits every two weeks once your claim is approved. The EDD will send you email/text notifications, but they sometimes get delayed or go to spam.
