Can I get paid for COVID sick week when certifying for EDD with no doctor's note?
I'm totally freaking out about my upcoming EDD certification and could use some advice! I've been on UI for about 2 months now after getting laid off from my restaurant job. My certification is due tomorrow for the past two weeks, but here's my problem: I had a horrible case of COVID the first week (I'm immunocompromised) and couldn't even get out of bed for 6 days. By the second week, I developed severe chest inflammation and ended up in the emergency room. The ER gave me documentation for my hospital visit, but I never got tested for COVID while I was actually sick - I just used home tests which I've already thrown away. My question is: How do I certify for that first week when I was too sick to look for work but have zero medical documentation? Will EDD deny my benefits for that week if I'm honest about being too ill to search for jobs? I tried calling EDD about this situation but couldn't get through to anyone. Anyone been through something similar?

When you certify, you should still mark that you were unable to work due to illness for the days you were sick. EDD allows for temporary illness without documentation in many cases. On your certification form, there's a question asking if you were too sick to work - answer "Yes" and indicate how many days. As long as it wasn't the entire certification period, you should still receive at least partial benefits. Based on my experience, they typically only require medical documentation if the illness extends beyond a week or becomes a pattern. Just be completely honest about which specific days you couldn't work or look for work due to illness.

•Thank you so much for this info! So if I say I was sick for 6 days in the first week, will they just reduce my benefit amount proportionally for that week? I'm so worried about being disqualified entirely.

i had somthing similar happen las month. i got a rly bad flu and couldnt look for work for like 5 days. i just put yes on the question about being sick and wrote how many days. they still paid me for that week but it was less money i think. dont worry to much

•That's really reassuring to hear! Did you have to provide any documentation or did they just take your word for it?

Just to clarify what others have said: When certifying, you'll answer "Yes" to question #2 "Was there any reason (other than sickness or injury) that you could not have accepted full-time work each workday?". Then for the follow-up question about how many days you were unable to work, enter the exact number (sounds like 6 in your case). EDD typically reduces your weekly benefit amount by 1/7 for each day you couldn't work. So for a 6-day illness in a 7-day week, you'd likely receive 1/7 of your normal weekly benefit amount. For the second week where you have medical documentation, you should still report those days as well, but having the documentation helps if they ever question it. Don't worry too much - being temporarily ill is a valid reason and doesn't disqualify you completely. It just reduces the amount for that specific week.

•Thank you for breaking this down so clearly! It's actually a relief that I'll still get something, even if it's just 1/7 of my weekly amount for that first week. I was afraid I'd be completely disqualified from the program or something.

DON'T LISTEN TO THESE PEOPLE SAYING IT'S FINE!!! The EDD system is DESIGNED to trap you. I answered honestly about being sick for just THREE DAYS and they completely disqualified my entire week AND flagged my account for an eligibility interview!!! Then I couldn't get anyone on the phone for WEEKS to fix it. They make it IMPOSSIBLE to reach anyone when there's a problem. The system is BROKEN and they're looking for ANY excuse to deny benefits!!

•Oh no, that's terrifying! Did you ever get it resolved? I really can't afford to lose my benefits right now.

You might be overthinking this. I had a similar situation back in January. Just mark the days you were sick and unable to work. As long as its not like every single week that youre reporting illness, EDD is usually fine with it. Everybody gets sick sometimes. Just be honest.

•That's EXACTLY what I did and ended up with a NIGHTMARE situation. The EDD system is totally inconsistent - some people get away with it fine and others get punished for being honest. There's NO rhyme or reason to how they handle these cases!!

I went through almost the exact same situation last month. I was sick (not COVID, but bad flu) and couldn't job search for 5 days, then had a doctor's note for the following week. When I called EDD to ask about it, I spent 4 HOURS trying to get through their phone system - kept getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and disconnects. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual EDD representative. They have this service that basically calls EDD for you and connects you when they get through. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep confirmed what others here are saying - just mark the days you were sick, and they'll reduce that week's benefit accordingly. It's not a big deal as long as you're honest about it. Hope this helps!

•Thank you for sharing this resource! I might use this Claimyr service if I run into any issues after certifying. I've been trying to call EDD for days with no luck.

wait im confused... so if ur sick do u say yes to question 2 or no? cuz question 2 asks if theres any reason OTHER THAN sickness that u couldnt work. so wouldnt u say no if sickness was the only reason??

•You're absolutely right to ask for clarification! Question #2 asks if there was any reason OTHER THAN sickness that you couldn't work. So if being sick was your only reason for not being able to work, you would answer "No" to question #2. Then Question #3 specifically asks "Were you sick or injured?" - that's where you would answer "Yes" and indicate the number of days. I apologize for the confusion in my earlier response. The EDD certification questions can definitely be tricky to understand.

UPDATE: I just completed my certification and answered honestly about the days I was sick. I said NO to question 2 (since being sick was my only reason) and YES to question 3 about being sick/injured, and entered 6 days for the first week and 1 day for the second week. My status now shows "pending" so I guess I'll find out in a few days what happens. Thanks everyone for your help - I'll update again when I know more!

•You did exactly the right thing. The "pending" status is normal after certifying - it usually takes 1-3 days to change to "paid" status. Since you were honest with your certification, you should receive at least partial payment for the first week and most of your regular amount for the second week. Keep us posted!
