I'm in a weird situation and hoping someone's dealt with this before. My benefit year runs from 08/15/2024 - 08/14/2025, but I just exhausted all my benefits even though there's still 4 months left in my benefit year. The twist is I got a notification with a NEW EDDCAN number saying I might qualify for benefits based on a different employer I worked for part-time during awards season (I'm in the entertainment industry). When I try to file online using this new EDDCAN, the system won't let me since my current benefit year isn't over yet. Has anyone successfully filed a new claim or reopened one BEFORE their benefit year ended? The online system is basically saying "nope, can't do it" but the notification suggests otherwise. I desperately need to get this sorted as I literally can't make rent next month if this doesn't work out. Is there a specific number I should call or approach I should take? The regular EDD line is completely useless.
I'm going crazy trying to check my claim status after my eligibility interview last week! Every time I try to log into UI Online it keeps telling me my EDDCAN number is incorrect. I've triple-checked the number from my paperwork and I KNOW I'm entering it right. I can't see if my claim was approved or denied after the interview and I'm getting really worried about paying rent next month. The weird thing is I was able to log in fine before the interview. Has EDD locked my account or something? Anyone know how to fix this or am I going to have to somehow get through on the phone?
Yes! Finally got it fixed yesterday. I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got through to EDD in about 30 mins. Turns out my account got flagged for "unusual activity" right after my interview (no idea why). The rep reset everything while I was on the phone and I can log in now. My claim was approved too! Such a relief after all that stress.
I think I've messed up my unemployment claim and I'm freaking out! I've been receiving regular UI benefits since December, but in March I picked up what I thought was a short-term W2 job (lasted 5 days ending 3/31/2025). When I certified for that period, I reported the work and income by entering the company's info in the employer section. Here's where I screwed up: I just received a notice dated 4/12 saying "Unemployment Claim Filed" which shows this company as my last employer. I never intended to file a new claim! I was just trying to properly report income for my existing claim. To make matters worse, I just found out this was actually a 1099 gig that I should have reported as self-employment income instead of W2. I'm totally confused and worried about: 1. Did EDD automatically open a second claim when I didn't want one? 2. Will reporting this incorrectly (as W2 instead of 1099) cause problems with my existing benefits? 3. What's the fastest way to fix this mess? I drafted an explanation letter but have no idea where to send it or if that will even help. I've tried calling 30+ times but can't get through. My rent is due next week and I'm worried my regular payments will stop because of this mistake. Has anyone dealt with something similar?
dont bother with the letter edd never reads those things lol. you gotta call and be super pushy or they wont help. i had to call 57 times in one day to get thru last month, its insane
I recommend taking two specific steps to resolve this quickly: 1. On UI Online, go to your homepage and look for the section that says "Upload Documents." Upload a clear letter explaining both issues (inadvertent new claim and 1099 vs W2 correction). Title it "Claim Correction Request - Urgent" to help it get routed properly. 2. Call the technical support line (not the regular claims line) at 8am sharp. The technical support agents can't fix claim issues directly, but they can see both claims in the system and add detailed notes for the claims specialists. They can also expedite your case if you explain that it's creating a payment interruption risk. Keep certifying for benefits on your original claim in the meantime. If payments pause temporarily, they'll be backdated once this is resolved.
Thank you! I'll prepare the letter tonight and upload it first thing in the morning. Do you know if the technical support line is the same as the regular EDD number? I'll try calling at 8am sharp tomorrow.
The technical support line is 1-833-978-2511, but I've found it works better to call the regular UI claims number (1-800-300-5616) right at 8:00:00am. Have your claim number ready, and when the automated system asks why you're calling, say "Payment issue" as that tends to get routed to more experienced agents.
I'm completely baffled by what's happening with my EDD payments right now. I filed a new claim on March 5, 2025, and based on my wages, I should be getting the maximum weekly benefit amount of $500. My claim was approved quickly, and my UI Online account confirmed I qualified for the full amount. However, when I checked my Money Network card yesterday, the deposit was only $172! I've certified for two weeks already and both payments came in at this drastically reduced amount. My theory is that EDD might be mixing up my current claim with an old one from last summer that was nearly exhausted. Has anyone experienced this payment discrepancy between what your UI Online shows vs what actually gets deposited? I've been trying to reach someone at EDD for three days straight, calling 800-300-5616 at different times, but keep getting the dreaded "we're receiving more calls than we can answer" message before getting disconnected. Are there any alternative contact numbers that actually work? Is there still a physical EDD office somewhere in the San Fernando Valley area where I could speak to someone face-to-face? This reduced payment isn't enough to cover my bills and I'm getting desperate for answers!
Just to clarify something important: the previous advice about benefit years is mostly correct, but there's a key distinction to understand. If your previous benefit year has ended but you still have a balance, they should start you on a new claim with a new benefit amount based on your recent wages. If your previous benefit year hasn't ended yet (even if the balance is exhausted), they typically keep you on that claim year. However, there's an exception: if you've earned enough wages since filing your previous claim to establish a new claim, AND your benefit amount would be at least $25 more per week than your old claim, you can request what's called a "Section 1275 Determination" where they evaluate if you qualify to establish a new claim before the old benefit year ends. This requires speaking with a tier 2 specialist, not just any representative.
Wow, I had no idea about the Section 1275 option! That sounds exactly like what I need. My new claim would definitely be at least $25 higher (it should be $328 higher based on my recent income). So I need to specifically ask for a Section 1275 Determination when I finally reach someone? Is there any specific documentation I should have ready?
Exactly - you need to specifically mention "Section 1275 Determination" when you speak with a rep. Have your recent pay stubs or proof of earnings ready to verify your wages since your last claim began. They'll need to calculate if you've earned enough qualifying wages in the quarters since your previous claim started. Make sure you speak with a tier 2 specialist - regular reps often don't know about this provision.
Update for anyone following this thread and having similar issues: EDD just announced they're having system-wide problems with claim transitions right now. Their latest website update says they're aware of payment amount discrepancies between new claims and continuing claims. They claim they're working on a fix, but as usual, no timeline given. The frustrating part is they're still telling people to call the regular number if they have issues, even though nobody can get through.
Thanks for this update! At least it confirms it's a known issue affecting multiple people. I was finally able to get through to an EDD representative yesterday using the callback service someone mentioned above. The rep acknowledged the problem and said they would escalate my case to a specialist who can perform the Section 1275 Determination. They said I should see the correct payment amount within 5-7 business days. I'll post another update once I know if it's resolved!
I'm desperately searching for an attorney who specializes in EDD unemployment cases. My situation has gone from bad to worse - just received a Notice of Determination disqualifying me from benefits after my appeal hearing last week. They're claiming I was terminated for misconduct, but my employer completely misrepresented what happened (I was let go during restructuring, not for performance issues). Now they want me to repay $8,750 in benefits I've already used to survive! I've tried contacting Legal Aid but they're booked solid for 3 weeks. Has anyone worked with a good unemployment attorney in California who doesn't charge upfront? My appeal deadline is in 12 days and I'm starting to panic. Any recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated.
my neighbor is helping me with my edd case and she said bay area legal aid hass free workshops for people who filing appeals. they show you how to prepare evidence and stuff. might be worth checking if they have one before your deadline.
That's really helpful, thank you! I'm not in the Bay Area but I'll check if there's something similar in my region. How is your case going?
Make sure you understand the difference between an ALJ hearing and a second-level appeal to the CUIAB Board. If you lose at the ALJ level, you can still appeal to the Board, which is why documentation is crucial. They'll review the record from your hearing but typically don't accept new evidence. For legal resources, try: 1. Center for Workers' Rights - They do free consultations for EDD cases 2. Legal Aid at Work - Their Workers' Rights Clinic can help with appeals 3. Your county's bar association - Many offer low-cost consultations with employment attorneys If you absolutely can't find affordable representation, at minimum have someone review your appeal statement before you submit it. The specific wording is extremely important.
Thank you for the detailed information! I'm writing down all these resources. I didn't realize there were two levels of appeals - that's actually somewhat reassuring. Has anyone here gone through a second-level appeal? What was your experience like?

AuthorI didn't even know that was an option! Is that something people can just do? Walk into an EDD office and get help with claims?

Most EDD offices don't handle UI claims in person anymore - they primarily deal with job search assistance now. For UI claims, you generally need to call. The exceptions are some of the America's Job Centers of California (AJCC) locations that have dedicated UI representatives, but these are limited and often require appointments.

UPDATE: I finally got through using the Technical Support number that was suggested! The tech support person transferred me to a claims specialist who knew exactly what to do. They confirmed I qualify for a subsequent claim based on my awards season work. The weekly benefit amount is lower ($247 vs my previous $450), but it's definitely better than nothing! They had to process it manually since the online system can't handle this situation. My new claim is being backdated to when my benefits exhausted, so I should get those weeks paid once everything processes. Thanks everyone for the help and specific advice - especially the technical support number and the exact terminology to use. That made all the difference!
