Moving to another state during pregnancy disability leave - will this affect my EDD benefits?

Hi everyone! I'm due with my first baby in February and starting my pregnancy disability leave in January. My husband just got a job offer out of state that we can't pass up, so we'll be moving to Nevada mid-February (right around my due date, great timing right? 🙃). \n\nI'm worried about what happens with my CA disability benefits if I move. Will EDD still pay me if I'm living in another state? Do I just need to update my address with them? Or does moving completely disqualify me from receiving benefits? I worked and paid into SDI in California for the past 4 years, so it seems unfair to lose those benefits just because we're moving.\n\nHas anyone dealt with moving during maternity leave? What about transitioning to PFL baby bonding afterwards - can I still claim that from Nevada if I'm eligible? Any advice appreciated!

u can still get ur ca benefits even if u move. just update ur address with edd. my cousin moved to oregon during her leave last year and still got all her payments. the important thing is that u worked in ca and paid into the system here

Oh thank goodness, that's such a relief to hear! Did she have any issues with the transition from disability to PFL after moving?

You absolutely can receive CA SDI Disability and PFL benefits while living in another state. The eligibility is based on where you WORKED and paid into the system, not where you currently live. Make sure you:\n\n1. Update your mailing address with EDD immediately after moving\n2. Change your direct deposit information if you're switching banks\n3. Continue to complete all certifications on time\n\nFor the transition from pregnancy disability to baby bonding PFL, you'll still need to file the PFL claim when your disability ends. That transition process is the same regardless of where you live. The only thing that changes is where they send your documents and payments.\n\nI've helped dozens of clients through this exact situation!

Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed information! This makes me feel way better. I was panicking thinking we'd lose thousands of dollars in benefits just because of the move. I'll definitely update my address right away once we move.

I moved from California to Texas during my pregnancy disability leave last year and it was a NIGHTMARE. EDD kept sending my paperwork to my old address even though I updated it online THREE TIMES. Then they suspended my claim because I \

Omg that sounds awful! I'm so sorry that happened to you. Did you eventually get your missed payments? I'm definitely worried about mail getting lost during our move.

Yes, I eventually got the money but it took FOREVER. I spent literally 3 weeks calling EDD every single day, sometimes 15-20 times per day, and could never get through. Always busy signals or it would hang up after being on hold for an hour. I was 8 months pregnant dealing with this stress!

Have you tried Claimyr? It's this service that connects you with an EDD agent usually within an hour instead of spending days trying to get through. It saved me so much stress during my maternity leave when I had payment issues. I was skeptical at first but their video demo convinced me: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5. Their website is claimyr.com - seriously worth it when you're desperate to talk to an actual person at EDD.

I wish I knew about this when I was dealing with my claim issues!! I'll definitely keep this in mind if I ever have EDD problems again. Thanks!

Random question but does Nevada have any state leave benefits? I don't think they do. California's system is so much better than most states. You're lucky you qualified before moving!

0 coins

Nevada does NOT have state disability or paid family leave. Only California, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Washington, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Oregon, and Colorado have comprehensive paid leave programs. Hawaii and Puerto Rico have disability-only programs.\n\nOne important clarification for the original poster: While you can receive your California benefits after moving, when you return to work, you'll fall under Nevada's unemployment system if needed in the future. And if you have another child while working in Nevada, you wouldn't qualify for California's paid leave programs for that pregnancy.

Thanks for this info! We actually might move back to CA in a couple years - my husband's position might be temporary. But good to know about the differences between states. I had no idea CA was one of so few with these benefits!

I totally forgot to update my address when I moved during my mat leave and my EDD debit card got sent to my old address lol. Had to have my old roommate forward it. Make sure you update EVERYTHING!!!!

0 coins

Ooof that's exactly the kind of thing I would do! Thanks for the reminder - I'll make a checklist of all the places I need to update my address.

Just to address the technical details of your situation:\n\n1. Moving states does NOT disqualify you from receiving California SDI or PFL benefits\n2. Your eligibility is based on your base period wages in California\n3. You must notify EDD of your address change within 7 days per their requirements\n4. For your transition from pregnancy disability to PFL baby bonding, you'll need to file form DE2501FP after birth\n5. You'll still be eligible for the full 8 weeks of PFL baby bonding even after moving\n\nOne important note - make sure your healthcare provider completes all required medical certifications before you move if possible. Getting these forms completed out of state can sometimes be more complicated if your new provider isn't familiar with California's system.

Thank you for these specific details! I'll talk to my doctor about completing any needed forms before we move. I didn't even think about that potential complication.

Moving during pregnancy/maternity leave can be stressful enough without worrying about benefits! I went through something similar when I moved from CA to Arizona during my second pregnancy. A few additional tips that helped me: 1. Take screenshots of your EDD account showing your updated address - sometimes their system glitches and it's good to have proof you updated it 2. If you're doing direct deposit, consider keeping your CA bank account open until all your benefits finish, just to avoid any payment delays 3. Save all your mail forwarding confirmations from USPS in case EDD needs them The good news is CA really does honor benefits for people who move - they understand life happens! Just stay on top of the paperwork and you should be fine. Congrats on the baby and the new adventure! 🍼

This is such helpful advice! I hadn't thought about keeping my CA bank account open during the transition - that's actually really smart. The screenshot tip is brilliant too, especially after hearing about @GalaxyGazer's issues with EDD not recognizing address updates. I'm definitely going to be extra cautious with documentation. Thank you for sharing your experience and congratulations on your second baby! It's so reassuring to hear from someone who actually went through this successfully. 💕

Just wanted to add one more thing that might help - when you update your address with EDD, also update it with your employer's HR department if you haven't already! Sometimes there can be coordination issues between employer disability coordinators and EDD if addresses don't match up in their systems. I learned this the hard way when my employer kept sending forms to my old address even after I updated EDD. Also, if you're planning to use PFL for baby bonding after your disability ends, make sure to file that claim as soon as your doctor clears you from pregnancy disability - there's only a limited window to apply. Good luck with the move and congratulations on your little one! 🎉

This is such great advice about coordinating with HR! I definitely need to make sure I update my address with them too - I hadn't even thought about potential coordination issues between my employer and EDD. The timing tip about filing for PFL baby bonding is really helpful too. I'm making a whole checklist now of everything I need to do before and after the move. Thanks for taking the time to share all these details! It's so nice to have people who've been through this willing to help out newcomers like me. 😊

I'm going through something similar right now! I'm 6 months pregnant and we're potentially moving to Arizona in a few months. Reading through all these responses has been SO helpful - I had no idea you could still get your CA benefits after moving to another state. One question for those who've done this - did anyone have issues with their out-of-state doctors understanding the CA disability forms? I'm worried about finding a new OB who knows how to fill out the right paperwork for EDD. Should I try to get as much documentation as possible from my current doctor before we move? Also @Zainab Yusuf - love the tip about keeping screenshots! I'm definitely going to document everything given some of the horror stories about EDD's system glitches. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences! 🙏

@Saleem Vaziri I m'so glad this thread is helping you too! For the doctor situation, I d'definitely recommend getting as much documentation as possible from your current CA OB before moving. Most out-of-state doctors aren t'familiar with California s'specific EDD forms, but they can usually figure it out if you bring them examples or copies of the forms your current doctor has filled out. You might also want to ask your current doctor if they d'be willing to continue handling your EDD paperwork remotely after you move - some are okay with this for existing patients, especially if it s'just for the remainder of your pregnancy disability. And definitely bring copies of all your medical records with you! The Arizona move timing sounds similar to what I went through. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions as you get closer to your move date. It s'definitely manageable with the right preparation! Good luck! 🤞

This thread has been incredibly informative! I'm also expecting (due in April) and my partner just got a job offer in Oregon that we're seriously considering. Reading everyone's experiences has given me so much peace of mind that we wouldn't lose our CA benefits if we decide to take the leap. @Nia Harris - your breakdown of the steps was super helpful! I'm bookmarking this for reference. And @Zainab Yusuf - the tip about taking screenshots is genius. After hearing about @GalaxyGazer's nightmare with address updates not going through, I'm definitely going to document everything multiple times. One thing I'm curious about - has anyone dealt with tax implications of receiving CA benefits while living in another state? I assume I'd still pay CA taxes on the SDI/PFL payments even if I'm a Nevada or Oregon resident by then? Just want to make sure I'm prepared for tax season! Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences - this community is amazing! 💙

@Luca Conti Great question about taxes! Yes, you ll'still need to pay California state taxes on your SDI/PFL benefits even if you re'living in Oregon by the time you receive them. California considers these benefits taxable income since they re'based on your CA wages and paid by the CA system. You might also need to file in Oregon depending on their tax laws, so definitely consult a tax professional to avoid any surprises! The Oregon job market is pretty good right now, and like others mentioned, Oregon actually has their own paid family leave program that started recently, so if you end up staying long-term and having another baby, you d'potentially qualify for their benefits too. But for this pregnancy, you re'all set with your CA benefits regardless of where you live. Congrats on your pregnancy and good luck with the job decision! 🎉

This whole thread has been incredibly reassuring! I'm currently 20 weeks pregnant and my husband just got offered a position in Texas. I was literally losing sleep over whether we'd lose my CA benefits if we moved, but seeing all these success stories (and even learning from the challenges like @GalaxyGazer experienced) makes me feel so much more confident about the decision. The practical tips everyone shared are gold - especially updating addresses with BOTH EDD and your employer's HR, keeping your CA bank account open during the transition, and getting medical documentation sorted before moving. I'm definitely going to create a comprehensive moving checklist based on all this advice! One quick question for the group - for those who moved during pregnancy, did you find it better to notify EDD before the move or after you're settled? I want to make sure I don't accidentally cause any delays in my benefits by updating too early or too late. Thanks again everyone for being so generous with your experiences! This community is amazing 💕

@Zara Khan I m'glad this thread has been helpful for you too! From what I ve'learned reading everyone s'experiences, it seems like the safest approach is to wait until you re'actually moved and settled before updating your address with EDD. That way you can provide them with your permanent new address rather than potentially creating confusion with a temporary address during the moving process. I d'suggest updating your address with EDD within a few days of being settled in your new place - they require notification within 7 days per @Ethan Moore s earlier'comment. Just make sure to keep any mail forwarding active with USPS to catch anything that might still get sent to your old address during the transition period. Texas is a great state to move to though like (Nevada, they don t have'state disability benefits , and)it sounds like you re being'really proactive about planning this transition. The fact that you re creating'a comprehensive checklist based on everyone s advice'shows you ll handle'this move like a pro! Best of luck with the move and congratulations on your pregnancy! 🌟

Wow, reading through all these experiences has been so eye-opening! I'm 12 weeks pregnant and we've been considering a move to Washington state for my partner's career, but I was terrified about losing my CA benefits. Seeing that so many of you have successfully navigated this gives me hope! @Nia Harris thank you for that detailed breakdown - it's exactly what I needed to see. And @Zainab Yusuf those practical tips about screenshots and keeping the CA bank account open are brilliant. I'm definitely taking notes! One thing I'm wondering - has anyone dealt with the timing of when to start looking for new healthcare providers in your destination state? I'm trying to figure out if I should wait until after I move to establish care, or try to set something up beforehand. I know @Saleem Vaziri mentioned concerns about out-of-state doctors understanding the CA forms, which has me a bit nervous. Also, for those who successfully transitioned from pregnancy disability to PFL after moving - did you have any issues with the baby bonding portion being processed from out of state? Washington does have their own family leave program, but I assume I'd still go through CA's system for this pregnancy since that's where I paid in. This community is seriously amazing - thank you all for being so generous with sharing your experiences! 🙏

@Yara Sabbagh Welcome to the thread! I m'so glad you found all these experiences helpful too. For healthcare providers, I d'actually recommend trying to establish care before you move if possible - that way you have someone lined up and can potentially get an appointment soon after arriving. When I moved during my pregnancy, I researched OBs in my new area and called a few offices to ask about their familiarity with out-of-state insurance and documentation. Some were more experienced than others with handling patients who had moved during pregnancy. For the CA disability forms, you can definitely bring examples of what your current doctor has filled out to show your new provider. Most doctors can figure it out even if they re'not familiar with CA s'specific requirements. And yes, you d'continue going through CA s'system for your PFL baby bonding benefits since that s'where you earned them - Washington s'program wouldn t'apply to this pregnancy. The timing sounds perfect since you re'still early in your pregnancy and have plenty of time to plan! Washington is beautiful and their family leave program is pretty good too for any future pregnancies. You ve'got this! 💪

I'm currently 16 weeks pregnant and just found out my husband got a job offer in Arizona that would require us to move in January (right when I'd be starting my leave). I've been absolutely panicking about losing my CA benefits, but this entire thread has been like finding a goldmine of information! @Nia Harris your step-by-step breakdown was incredibly helpful - I'm screenshot-ing it for my reference. And @Zainab Yusuf the practical tips about keeping documentation and screenshots are so smart, especially after reading about @GalaxyGazer's address update nightmares. I'm feeling so much more confident now knowing that I can still receive my full CA SDI and PFL benefits even after moving. The key seems to be staying super organized with address updates and making sure all the paperwork flows smoothly between EDD, my employer, and healthcare providers. Arizona doesn't have state disability benefits like CA, so I'm really grateful I qualified here before we potentially move. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences - this community has seriously saved me from weeks of stress and worry! I'm going to start making my moving checklist based on all the amazing advice shared here. 🙌

@Aiden Chen I m'so glad this thread has helped ease your stress! Moving during pregnancy is overwhelming enough without worrying about losing benefits. January timing for your move actually works out well since you ll'have time to get settled before the baby arrives. One thing I d'add to all the great advice already shared - consider getting a folder or binder specifically for all your EDD-related documents once you move. Keep copies of your address change confirmations, bank statements showing direct deposits, and any correspondence with EDD all in one place. If you do run into any issues like some others mentioned, having everything organized will make resolving them much faster. Also, since Arizona gets pretty hot, make sure you have good air conditioning sorted before your due date - being heavily pregnant in Arizona summer heat is no joke! But winter/spring there is actually really nice. Wishing you a smooth move and congratulations on your pregnancy! 🌵☀️

This entire thread has been incredibly informative! I'm 14 weeks pregnant and we're considering a move to Colorado for my husband's job opportunity. I was really worried about losing my CA benefits, but reading all these success stories and practical advice has put my mind at ease. The tips about updating addresses with both EDD AND your employer's HR department, keeping your CA bank account open during the transition, and taking screenshots of everything are so valuable. I'm definitely going to create a comprehensive checklist based on all the wisdom shared here. One question - has anyone had experience with Colorado's system? I know they have their own family leave program now, but I assume for this pregnancy I'd stick with CA's system since that's where I paid in. It's amazing how much this community helps each other out! Thank you all for sharing your experiences so openly. 💙

@Hazel Garcia Yes, Colorado does have their own FAMLI program that started in 2024, but you re'absolutely right that you d'continue with California s'system for this pregnancy since that s'where you earned your benefits! Colorado s'program is actually pretty generous too - if you end up staying there long-term and having future children, you d'potentially qualify for their benefits as well. From what I ve'read in this thread, the key is really just staying organized with all the address updates and documentation. The checklist idea is brilliant - I wish I had thought of that when I was navigating my own move! Colorado is such a beautiful state, and the timing at 14 weeks gives you plenty of time to plan everything out properly. It s'really wonderful how supportive this community is. Reading everyone s'experiences has been so reassuring, especially knowing that CA really does honor these benefits regardless of where you end up living. Best of luck with your decision and congratulations on your pregnancy! 🏔️✨

I'm so grateful I found this thread! I'm 18 weeks pregnant and my husband just got a job offer in Florida that we're seriously considering. I was absolutely terrified about potentially losing my CA benefits if we moved, but reading everyone's experiences has given me so much relief. @Nia Harris your detailed breakdown of the steps was exactly what I needed - I'm saving it for reference! And all the practical tips from @Zainab Yusuf about taking screenshots and keeping documentation are so smart. After reading about @GalaxyGazer's struggles with EDD's system glitches, I definitely want to be extra careful with documentation. It's incredible that CA honors these benefits even after you move to another state. I've been paying into SDI for over 5 years, so it would have felt really unfair to lose those benefits just because of a move. Florida doesn't have state disability benefits like CA, so I'm really thankful I qualified here before this potential move. Thank you everyone for being so generous with sharing your experiences - this community is amazing! I'm going to start creating my moving checklist based on all the wonderful advice shared here. 🌴

@Sarah Jones Welcome to this incredibly helpful thread! I m'actually new to this community too, but reading through everyone s'experiences has been so reassuring. It s'amazing how many of us are going through similar situations with potential moves during pregnancy - you re'definitely not alone in this! The fact that CA honors benefits based on where you worked rather than where you live is such a relief, right? I had no idea about this before finding this discussion. Florida will be quite a change from CA, but at least you won t'have to worry about losing your hard-earned benefits that you ve'been paying into for 5 years. I love how supportive everyone has been in sharing their real experiences - both the success stories and the challenges like what @GalaxyGazer went through. It really helps to know what to expect and how to prepare properly. The checklist idea based on everyone s'advice is brilliant - I m'planning to do the same thing if we end up moving. Best of luck with your decision, and congratulations on your pregnancy! This community really is wonderful. 💕

Hi Zara! I'm new to this community but I'm in a very similar situation - 15 weeks pregnant and my partner just got an amazing job offer in Washington state. I was absolutely panicking about potentially losing my CA benefits until I found this thread! Reading through everyone's experiences has been such a relief. I had no idea that CA would honor benefits based on where you worked rather than where you currently live. I've been paying into SDI for 3 years here in CA, so it would have felt devastating to lose those benefits just because of a career opportunity. The practical advice from everyone has been incredible - especially about updating addresses with both EDD AND your employer's HR, taking screenshots for documentation, and keeping your CA bank account open during the transition. I'm definitely creating a detailed checklist based on all the wisdom shared here. Your timing with the February due date and mid-February move sounds stressful but manageable with proper planning! It sounds like as long as you stay organized with all the paperwork and address updates, you should be able to receive your full CA benefits even from Nevada. Thank you for starting this discussion - it's helped so many of us who are facing similar decisions! Best of luck with your move and congratulations on your first baby! 🍼✨
