EDD PFL payment method switch + check forwarding when moving out of state?

I just got my first PFL payment for baby bonding but it came as a paper check even though I specifically requested the EDD debit card option on my application! Super annoying timing since I'm literally moving to Colorado in 4 days (husband got a job offer we couldn't pass up). Is there a way to: 1) Change my remaining payments to the debit card like I originally wanted, and 2) Update my mailing address or set up forwarding for the checks since I'll be out of state? I'm worried about checks getting lost in the mail forwarding shuffle. Has anyone dealt with this before? The EDD website is SO confusing about changing payment preferences mid-claim!

You need to call EDD directly to change your payment preference from checks to the debit card. There's no way to do this online unfortunately. For your address change, you can update that in your UI Online account under Profile > Contact Information, but I'd still recommend calling to make sure they connect the address change to your current PFL claim specifically. The system sometimes doesn't update everything at once.

Thanks so much! Ugh I've been trying to call for 2 days but keep getting disconnected after waiting for like 45 mins each time. It's so frustrating especially with the move coming up so fast!

That's good to know at least! Did you eventually switch to direct deposit or the card? I'm worried about checks getting lost between states.

If you're having trouble getting through to EDD on the phone, you might want to check out Claimyr.com - I was in a similar situation (needed to change payment method ASAP) and they got me connected to an actual EDD agent in less than 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5. Totally worth it especially since you're moving so soon and need this resolved quickly!

I've never heard of this before - is it legit? I'm desperate at this point so I might try it. Did you actually talk to a real EDD person this way?

Yes! It's totally legit. They just help you get through the phone system. I talked to a real EDD agent who fixed my issue right away. With your move happening so soon, I'd definitely recommend trying it instead of wasting hours getting disconnected.

THE EDD SYSTEM IS LITERALLY THE WORST. They constantly mess up payment preferences and addressing issues. I requested direct deposit THREE TIMES and still got paper checks for my entire maternity leave last year. You absolutely HAVE TO CALL to fix this. And good luck with that - their phone system is designed to make you give up. 😡 Also, MAKE SURE you call the right number! The PFL number is different than regular disability or unemployment. And when you move states, you have to keep filing certifications as if you still live in CA - don't let them tell you otherwise!

Wow this is stressful! What number did you use for PFL specifically? I think I might have been calling the wrong one.

1-877-238-4373 is the PFL specific number. But seriously, I spent HOURS trying to get through. Best times to call are right when they open at 8am or around 1-2pm in my experience.

Just to clarify some misinformation: You can update your address online in your UI Online account, and USPS forwarding will work for your checks. However, changing your payment method from paper checks to the EDD debit card mid-claim does require a call to EDD. Also, moving out of state doesn't affect your benefit eligibility for a claim that's already approved. Your benefits are based on your CA employment and wages prior to filing, not your current residence. One important thing to note: If you do get switched to the EDD debit card, it will be mailed to your address on file, so make that change first or time it carefully with your move. The Bank of America EDD debit cards can take 7-10 business days to arrive after they're requested.

Thank you for the detailed information! That's really helpful about the timing. Should I just update my address to the new Colorado address now, even though I'm still in CA for a few more days? Or wait until I actually move?

I would recommend updating your address about 2-3 days before you actually move. That way, if they issue the debit card immediately after your call, it would likely be sent to your new address rather than getting lost in forwarding. Also, make sure you set up USPS mail forwarding online at least 3 business days before your move date to cover any mail sent to your old address.

Definitely go with the debit card! I'm kicking myself for not double-checking my selection. I thought I selected it but somehow ended up with checks.

I used Claimyr last month when I was having issues with my maternity leave to PFL transition, and it worked great. Was connected to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes after trying for days on my own. For your situation specifically, when I talked to the EDD rep, they told me that once your payment preference is set up initially (check vs. debit card), changing it mid-claim requires a specific form called a "Payment Method Change Request" that they have to process manually. That's why you can't do it online - there's no digital version of this form. When you do reach a representative, be sure to specifically ask for this form and confirm they're sending it to your new address. Good luck with the move and the new baby!

Thank you so much for this specific info! I definitely would've been confused about what to ask for. I'll try Claimyr today and specifically ask about that form.

Thank you! It's definitely hectic moving with a 2-month-old but we're making it work! I think I might just stick with the checks too since I only have 6 weeks of payments left.

UPDATE: I used Claimyr this morning and got through to EDD in about 12 minutes! The representative was super helpful and processed both my address change and switched me to the debit card for future payments. She said the card should arrive at my new Colorado address in 7-10 business days. Just wanted to update in case anyone else runs into a similar situation. Thank you all for the advice!

Great to hear you got it resolved! Smart move getting this taken care of before your move. One more tip: once you get your BofA EDD debit card, you can transfer the funds to your regular bank account through the BofA prepaid website for free. Might be easier than using the card directly, especially if you're out of state.

So happy this worked out for you! I was following your thread because I'm in a similar situation - just applied for PFL and will be moving to Oregon next month. Your experience definitely convinced me to try Claimyr if I run into any issues. Thanks for sharing the update and best of luck with the move and your little one!
